Computer Help Thread v4.0

I guess what i meant by known was that others besides myself have and are having the same problem, but yes I do have folders listed. I really dont understand why it started to act up now?

On another note though I want to buy a new computer but I dont want necessarily build it myself (newegg ect.) What do you guys think of http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=7779562 . I know I am going to want a new gfx card, any ideas on that?

Mad: When is it specifically happening? Were new directories/locations or a new device added? I’m curious if this is some ACL/share issue. =\ An actual trace would be more interesting, but good luck with that. =P This is why everyone needs to be in Redmond so I can live debug crazy machines. =)

endless:
Set:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer]
“Logging”= “voicewarmup”

That turns on full MSI logging.

Now rerun that MSI v3.1 install I pointed you to. Now: what are the contents of KB893803v2.log ? You probably want to attach that instead of just pasting it, since it should be a large file.

This may be the most obscure question ever asked, but I used to have a Compaq Presario desktop back in `97 (I’ll have to look up the version tomorrow) that had this OK-looking wallpaper with stars in space, with a little drag-down menu at the top-center point of the screen (red) that had Favorites(?) and an option to turn this nice ambient tune on or off, that played infinitely. I think the wallpaper(s) was called “musicon” and “musicoff”.

I was wondering where can I download this wallpaper or set of wallpapers of a particular computer model or if anyone can send the exact wallpaper - and supplemental files if needed - I’m referring to.

Well, its happening whenever. Sometimes it happens AFTER in end the program in task manager, sometimes it doesnt happen at all, but it is almost always running from what I can tell. Although it did start around the time I installed Win Amp Remote. Do you have any advice on running the trace or anything. I’m gonna uninstall Win Amp Remote (didnt think about that 'til right now).

Sorry I’m very incompetent.

I got as far as “Installer” but I can’t find the Logging = voicewarmup.

Where is that?

Here is a screenshot of what I see:

Thanks again for the help.

Yup, you need to create that registry value. Select NEW : String Value.

I posted a few days ago about a computer that kept restarting for no reason… I narrowed it down to it restarting when I insert CDs 95% of the time. If I don’t have a cd in the drive it will run fine.

Could it be damaged or bad RAM? I’m going to pick up a new stick of RAM tomorrow to test out, hopefully it solves it.

Hey guys! I was thinking of buying more RAM, and need some help!

I used some software to scan my PC and give me a readme file of my specs and whatnot. It told me that my PC has 2 ram slots, and it can hold a maximum of 4GB Ram. Those 2 slots are being filled currently by one 256MB and one 512MB. They are SDRAM and are DIMM. I know that DIMM means you can mix and match, but what is SDRAM?

When I enter what I’m looking for in ebay, it comes up with DDR SDRAM? I’m confused. Are SDRAM and DDR SDRAM the same thing, except DDR is more powerful? If my PC supports SDRAM will it support DDRSDRAM? Thanks for the help!

Ramza, go to crucial.com and do their memory scanner thing. It’ll tell you what types of RAM you can get. Either that, or list your PC specs (manufacturer and model) and we can tell you what you can get that can better perform your computer. Also, did the readme file contain the pin number for your RAM?

my DSL keeps on disconnecting. anyone know the problem?

SDRAM = Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory
DDR = Double Data Rate (I.E. it’s the same thing, but only in a faster format)
DDRSDRAM = Geek speek. Just calling it DDR will suffice.

Normal SDRAM is old. If your motherboard was made any time after 2000, it probably will be using DDR. It should tell you when your system posts whether or not it uses DDR.

Or, if you can’t find that or if it doesn’t say, you’re going to upgrade it anyway, so you might as well open it up now, take out a stick and look at it. If it has two notches in it then it’s regular SDRAM. If there is only one notch in it, then it’s DDR.

Now comes the second problem. There are now three types of DDR. Normal DDR, DDR2, and DDR3, which won’t be mainstream for a good while. You need to find out what kind of DDR your system uses and buy accordingly because it is not reverse compatible. DDR has 184 pins, DDR2 has 240 pins and I don’t have a clue how many DDR3 has, but I don’t care because it’s too expensive right now and you probably don’t need it.

Next, is the speed. It really doesn’t matter because most motherboards can auto-detect the speed so if you pick something that’s too fast it won’t hurt a bit. getting a fast speed doesn’t matter all that much, either.

Finally, DDR can be put into a configuration called dual channel mode. It’s not extremely important, but your motherboard has to support it for it to be utilized, and you have to install the memory in the proper configuration or else it will NOT be in dual channel mode. You must install the memory in pairs, and they must be the exact same. Same size, same speed, same timings. And they must be installed on separate channels.

For instance if you have four slots on your motherboard and you want to install 4GB of RAM in a dual channel configuration then you need to install a 1GB stick in each slot. Easy, right? Well, what if you purchased 2 2GB sticks of RAM? In that case, you’d have to install one stick in memory slot one, channel 1, and the other one in memory slot one, channel 2. The motherboard should have them labeled 1, 2, 3, & 4 and you’ll want to install your memory in slots 1 and 3.

If you install a third stick to increase your memory capacity, then you’ve just disabled your dual-channel configuration, and you’re running in regular old single channel mode because you have to have the same amount of memory on each channel and they must be in pairs to take advantage of dual-channel DDR. It’s really only beneficial if your CPU has a very fast bus speed. Otherwise, it’s pretty useless since data in memory can’t be processed any faster than the CPU can receive it through the bus stream. It’s probably not extremely important to you, but I figured I’d inform you anyway.

You can also download CPU-Z to get all the information you’re looking for.

That question is pretty vague and it could be just about anything causing it.

How often does it disconnect?
What do you have to do to recover the connection?
Is your computer connected to a router?
Is it a wireless router, or a cabeled one?

Thanks very much for the help Manx! I used the CPUZ thingy and this is what I got:

Thats all the info I can gather. I have 2 slots, and I wanna buy 2x1 GB sticks od DDR RAM. I was looking at this and thought it might be good.

Please tell me if I can use this, I really want to upgrade my system.

@bridgypoo

I used that crucial scan, and this is what it turned up. If all this info is not leading enough as to what RAM I need, do tell me what other info I need!

Here is the crucial scan:

After getting tired of playing my game with a black bar on top, I decided to troubleshoot. I checked the device manager and it shows that all of my drivers are installed correctly. So, I checked my moniter settings and also checked my NVIDIA settings. Both of them have the same settings: 1024 by 768 pixels.

The last thing I did, was check the NVIDIA site for information, but couldn’t find anything about the black bars…“My last resort would be SRK” I thought.

My hardware:

Monitor: Sony SDM - M51

Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200

Help is appreciated.

Thanks

Hey guys, I tried specs program, but im still getting errors, crashes
Its like this trojan/virus is smart and prevents me using anti virus/spyware programs.
When i doubleclick my adaware icon , i get some bs error message.
MY firefox broswer is crashing more, and even things like MS powerpoint and msword.
Also, i still get random messages like “your system is unstable…” that look official but probablty arent.
Also, bootup takes longer now. And i still cant delete 2 icons from my desktop.

I asked my friend and he said the registry may be affected.
Do you guys have a recommendation for a good registry cleaner for a noob?

I dont care if i have to buy the program. this shit is getting on my nerves and i have a big test in 1 week .

thanks

Hey guys, having trouble connecting my laptop to a wireless connection. I let my friend use my laptop, but when I search for her wireless network (which works, she has two other computers hooked up to it) it says ‘no wireless networks found in range’.

I tried clicking a box that said something like ‘allow other users to connect to this network’ on her main computer but it puts all the computers offline for some reason.

That will probably work.

You didn’t mention what game it is.
Is this the only program that does this?

Try changing the in-game resolution and see if it stays there.
Check the game manufacturer’s site to see if it’s a known issue.
Even if the drivers you have are installed correctly, install the most current ones anyway.

my dl speeds are total ass. they’re also prone to failure (doesn’t happen to anything else on my network)

brand new m2n sli deluxe mobo.
vista ultimate 64 (only a few hours old)
new Ethernet cable
new modem

my brothers computer (xp home) is also on my router, he regularly gets 200-600kbps. on my new machine i rarely hit 100.

nothing else is on (network wise) right now and i can’t get over 60kbps. any help would be great.

^ Drivers.

i have the newest ones. the drivers are for 64 so no issue there. i’m thinking ports need to be forwarded?

update:from nvidia’s site i get 600kbps. i guess its the places i’m going to.
