Computer Help Thread v4.0

Dell Inspiron E1705 It’s about 2 years old and the lagspikes occur randomly as far as I can tell, but they definately get more frequent them more I play now that I think about it.

Thanks, I did that and some things changed. The VLC still hangs and shuts down, however the Interactual player and WMP don’t say I need a dvd decoder now (although WMP still gives me an error and says I need to change my display settings) and the PowerDVD trial works so I guess I’ll be buying the full version to watch my stuff.

I found a computer in the garbage room on the floor of my apartment. Looked brand new, monitor/keyboard/mouse/tower and all. It’s a P4/2.4GHz with a GeForce 2 MX and 256MB of ram.

It booted up fine but restarts on its own at random. I was trying to find what the source of the problem could be and was hoping someone on here could help me out. It’s running Windows XP…

Could it be the HD? Mobo? Power supply? Any suggestions or opinions would be appreciated. Thanks!

I recommend formatting all drives and partitions, simply because you don’t know what’s on there, but anyways,

Right click My Computer and go to Properties (OR Start > Settings > Control Panel > System). Click the Advanced tab, then under “Startup and Recovery” hit the Settings button. Uncheck “Automatically restart” under System Failure, then hit OK, and hit OK again.

Now just wait. If you get a BSOD, write down the stop code and any error messages and search at microsoft.com what they mean, and how they can be fixed. If you don’t get a BSOD and the PC just restarts like before, then it’s probably hardware related.

Sound like there’s some kind of dust build-up around the ventilation area. Get rid of the dust there, and the overheating should go away. This happened to me before. I owned an ASUS laptop for two years, and I never bothered to clean up the internal part of the machine during these times. Then around last month, I noticed my 3rdS starting to behave more erratic the longer I play. Then, I decided to spray alot of compress air to all holes of the ventilation, start up 3rdS again, and the game gone back to its smooth, normal pace.

Endless: that indicates that the Windows Installer service is having issues. This is in line with what I was thinking. You should upgrade to a more current version of MSI:

how do I close zone alarm? I ended the program but it’s still running in the background, I went to ctrl. alt. delete and tried to end the process but it says ‘The operation could not be completed Access is denied’?

I use Wine in the rare instance that I absolutely need to use some Windows app, but sadly I don’t know of it coming included in any Live CD. That’s not saying there isn’t one, just none that I know of.

Yeah, I know about Wine, but it’s not included in any live CD that I know of unless you build it from scratch yourself. I am going to do this now that I have found an applicable situation, but I fixed the problem with the live CD. Just had to copy some files.

You have to be an Administrator or Superuser.

I’m thinking about buying something like this, but can I just plug it into the motherboard and use it or is there a chance of ‘compatibility’ issues? :wonder: My system is compatible [according to the system requirements]. I just need to know if motherboards have anything to do with…anything.

^ If your mobo has a PCI slot available then, yeah it will work.

Your motherboard wil determine if it runs at USB 1 or 2.0 speeds, however.

If you’re just looking for more slots to connect more USB devices, you may be able to find a hub that you won’t have to open up the case to install.

 Good lookin’ out Manx. I need to pick me up one those ASAP.

Well, I did reformat already and during the Windows XP installation the computer restarted. I can’t get through installing XP without it restarting.

I would of tried removing the auto restart on system failure but I don’t have an OS installed anymore.

Hypothetically, let’s say I have some 1080p Blu Ray rips that are ts files. I try to play them in MPC, VLC, with ffdshow and haali media splitter installed. However, I only get the audio and no video. My system specs can handle playing the files, I know that. How come I cannot get the video to play?

Sounds like you don’t have the proper video codec installed. The audio is in a format that your players can read, but the video cannot be decoded. Ask whoever made the rips what you need to play it.

Preppy would be the ideal man to ask for further help. And to endorse using Windows Media Player…

i am admin/superuser, i’m the only mofo on this computer:sweat:

Sounds like a bad hard drive to me. I work for Geek Squad, and when I was doing a side job for a friend we had a similar problem. I ran some diagnostics with PC-Check and found out the hard drive was starting to fail.

My only other idea would be heat issues but I can’t imagine you having any problems with the components you mentioned.

Should just be AVC, MPEG2, or VC-1. This field is still being cobbled out. If you don’t get it, go follow the amateur pros as they figure it out.

I don’t help with these kinds of things - he’s asking about ripping Blu-Ray discs, which isn’t something I’d touch with a ten foot pole.

I’m pretty neutral on what player you use. But saying “you have to use Player X” to view this content sucks ass to me (imagine if you were locked into ONLY using some player you didn’t like?), and so I try to get us back to smart stuff like actual working solutions and good/sustainable practices. shrug

^ I just wanted to throw out something for the resident WMP guru. Media player has been really good in it’s latest versions.

And oh, since we’re on the subject… what would happen if you got caught doing something like what he mentioned which is illegal. Would you be able to stay with the development team after that, even if it was completely separate from work?

Wine it is then!
