Computer Help Thread v4.0

Yeah good idea, I’ll get a cable like that tomorrow - it’s 1:21 am down here.

Edit: just noticed your location, ha. I’ll drop by Maplin tomorrow

My PC keeps crashing when I play HOMMIII:WOG.
I think it started right after installing some update of Firefox, is it possible ?
And also, since it started crashing, I can’t use Spybot:S&D anymore, it crashes at some point !
Third point, the download window of Firefox doesn’t work anymore… and I just can’t save images from the Web anymore…
So I assume it really does come with Firefox. I tried removing but still got those problems.

Any idea how to clean my PC ?

easiest thing to do would be a format.

There are 3 things you should do:

a) Do a “System File Checker” (Start > Run > type in “SFC /scannow”)

b) Scan your primary drive for errors (Right-click on primary drive > Properties > Tools > “Check Now” button > Check off two option boxes > Start > restart your machine and the scan will take place. Could take several minutes for scanning, depending on the capacity of your drive.

c) Go to Start > Programs > Mozilla > Firefox (Safe Mode) > A box will pop up. Select “Reset toolbars…” and “Reset all user preferences” > Continue.

Are you using XP or Vista?

I’m on Windows XP Home Edition

I’m having problems installing Windows Installer; I can’t install GGPO or the Microsoft NET 2.0 Runtime, which is required for GGPO

I have a Windows XP Professional Edition CD.
If I install XP Pro, will it overwrite anything important/will I lose any data?

Thanks in advance

is there any way to make vista stop sucking?

^-- What specific problem(s) are you running into?

Vista SP1 Release Candidate 1 is out, which should address a number of interesting issues, if you want to give that a spin.

Oh, and I’ll Paypal anyone $10USD if you can help me get GGPO running.

Seriously.

I won’t help with that so someone else can get the $10, but this:

Microsoft NET 2.0 Runtime

is the interesting part to me. Are you otherwise up to date on Windows Update? Any other problems there? How exactly does the .NET fail to install?

I’m 90% up to date with Windows Update.
I have auto-update on, and almost all of the updates install. Only a few autoupdates last month didn’t install, but that was about it. I had 2 autoupdates yesterday, and they installed without any problems.

.NET doesn’t install because it says I have a problem with Windows Installer. I’ve tried to install Windows Installer 3, and that says it has been installed, but when I try to install Windows Installer 2.0, it says I’m in Safe Mode/don’t have administrative access (I’m the only user of the laptop, it’s my own personal laptop, so I should have complete admin access)

The only other problem is Windows Live Messenger.
This problem first arose late last year when Microsoft forced users to upgrade to Windows Live Messenger from regular MSN Messenger.

I can’t install that for some reason, I get the “1601” error, and I can’t fix that. I contacted Microsoft a lot of times, but they keep going in circles with help ideas.

Yea, but internet and computer/Kaillera etc is working fine.
I don’t know what’s up, unfortunately.

What’s your support incident number?
Did they point you to the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility:

Other apps don’t usually delve into the areas that would likely make these issues happen. It’s really primarily of interest to simply understand what does fail for now, since those will have associated log files.

I forgot my support number, but I’ll download that Windows Installer Cleanup Utility when I get home from work.
Where is the %temp%\dd_net located? I’m VERY VERY unfamiliar with .NET, I’m only getting it for GGPO. I honestly don’t even know what it is used for/what it does.

Thanks for reply, will try that.

I’m on XP

%temp% is the location. Type it into the Start:Run prompt. Look for files beginning with dd_ . One of those should be your install log.

What you guys recommend to use to clean LCD monitors? My monitor is pretty dirty ;[.

Ok, I’m home now.

Windows Installer Cleanup Utility didn’t work. It said: “Windows Installer service cannot be accessed. This can occur if you are running safe mode, or Windows installer is not properly installed. Please contact your support personnel for assistance”

Thanks for the %temp% directory, I’ve never used that before.
Unfortunately, nothing much of interest, I’ll post up the log entries here.

Mr. Noodle: Use a soft towel that has slightly warm water on it, only a bit moist. Then wipe it down. Then use a small paper towel to dry it. That is what I do.

Ok, log file 1:
