Computer Help Thread v4.0

Version: right-click on the file in Explorer, select Properties : Details
Fixing this: if you can’t unregister it, you should be able to simply rename the file and have this start happening.

Where did you get this super-old file? That would potentially be of benefit to know.

Well the details are crap. All I can say is that it was created on 9th November 2006. I have only had this laptop for 2 months so it must have come already installed. Either that or it was downloaded via torrent. Nero 7 and 8.

Also, rename to what?

Thanks for helping.

Um: rename nevideo.ax to thisshitisbroke.ax . Anything works, really.

I have a problem with my Microsoft PS/2 mouse. I can scroll up, but I can’t scroll down.

Chances are that the scroll wheel is simply broken. I see this at work all the time and it’s always the same where the mouse will scroll up but not down. I think it’s most likely because when reading a web page people tend to scroll down much more frequently than they scroll up. Thus, that’s what breaks.

Yep it does. Thanks very much. I can now use my webcam in windows messenger.

So there’s this ringing noise, you know, a ringing noise very much like those small cat bells. I got scared the shit out of and ran out my room the first time I heard it…

Anyway, I found out the source is coming from my PC case. Every so often the noise appears for whatever reason I don’t know. I’m betting it’s one of my hard drive but not quite sure. Any ideas?

i got this weird networking problem. I’m trying to use the cat5 that’s pre-wired in my house instead of using the wi-fi. but for some reason only my laptop (vaio sz-140) is the only computer that is able to use the lines. when I try to connect it to any of 3 desktops, it detects that I plugged it in but it never fully establishes a connection.

A friend of mine had a similar problem at his house and he bought a new ethernet card and it worked. he assumed it was something with the onboard ethernet but it doesn’t really make sense on why it wouldn’t like it.

any thoughts?

Are you disabling the connection on the laptop before disconnecting? You have to clear the info of the connection before you can establish another one when using cat5. Assuming winxp, go into network settings and just click disable for your wan/lan connection

Thanks. That makes alot of sense. It’s about time I bought a new mouse anyway.

Hey folks.

Just now I encountered a problem with ImgBurn (thought this app was highly recommended?) as shown in the following pic:

http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/1723/errorxb1.jpg

What does that error mean? Is the ISO file I was writing unfit to be tried again? Since I burn things so rarely, getting a coaster is a real disappointment. I was using a Verbatim DVD-R since those are supposed to be one of the best. I had tried the same brand of discs with a different file a while ago and burned it with the same program with no problems. I didn’t do anything differently this time.

Thanks.

Edit - I was burning at 2x speed
Edit 2 - here’s the log. i left out a few things at the top that i don’t think are appropriate. and no it’s not porn, mostly a legal thing i guess

Aye Tech talk. My name is Fritz. Longtime board user, first time tech talker…

Ok, enough cheesiness. I have a couple problems with my computer that I need help with.

  1. It seems like my computer doesn’t recognize it’s usb ports…I dunno it’s wierd, but I’m too cheap to send it in for repairs…actually, not cheap…poor. There we go.

  2. Both my web browsers (Firefox and Iexplorer) fuck up randomly. I get random pop-ups from internet explorer and I was just hoping somebody could recommend a (free) virus program to clean my shit up. kthx

that’s weird. i have never heard of such a thing but that’s not the problem anyways. i can use the cat5 connection on my just fine, it just doesn’t work on any desktops. or if you’re thinking that my laptop still has the wireless connection active when i plug in the cat5, that is not it either. i’ve also tried different desktops using different lines that go to different rooms and it still wouldn’t work.

AVG is pretty dope.

OK sorry for the trouble before. Extracted the ISO again and tried Alcohol 120% this time. Writing process went through without problems. Although both times, the drive did start making a faint vibration-like buzzing noise sometime during the latter half of the burning. Hope nothing’s wrong with it. If the disc works, I don’t think I’ll be using ImgBurn again.

As fjf314 mentioned, use AVG. And in addition, you should also immunize your web browsers by using “Spybot: Search & Destroy” and/or “SpywareBlaster”. It will prevent web browsers from accepting spyware from the net and it’ll stop spyware from making unexpecting configuration changes to your browsers. Make sure you do the spyware scan first, then immunize. Don’t forget to update.

are you on a cable connection? What I mean is that when you are connected to the laptop, it’s mac address is connected to your isp. Each ethernet adapter has a unique MAC address. If you unplug without disconnecting the connection on the laptop, your isp is still sending signals to the original MAC address. This is why you see you are ‘connected’, but can’t establish a full connection. So you have to clear the mac address connection from your laptop (disable the lan) in windows, and then plug the cat 5 into your desktop connection.

oh, i didn’t understand what you meant. i thought it’s the mac address of the modem that is connected to the isp because i’ve switched routers plenty of times behind a cable modem without any problems. however that’s not the problem anyways because there is a router behind my cable modem. the connection problem lies even before the router because i can’t even connect to it.

possible causes that i can think of:
-mixing of cat5 and cat5.e (don’t think this causes a problem at all)
-mixing of solid and stranded cables(shouldn’t be a problem either)
-the cat5 going through the wall is complete garbage
-garbage connectors

and for some weird reason, my onboard ethernet card doesn’t like some types of cat5 and does not detect anything beind plugged it at all.

I connected my XPSP2 laptop to my LCD TV (DVI to HDMI).

Picture is excellent, but there’s no sound through the TV speakers. The cable supports audio as well, so it’s not the cable. The soundcard in the laptop is SoundMAX HD Audio, updated with the latest drivers.

I know you have to do something in the Control Panel, but in the Sounds and Devices section of the CP there are not a lot of options for me to play around with.

Instead, I just get sound output from the speakers of the labtop. Any suggestions guys?

Try plugging an audio cable into the headphone part of your laptop that plugs the other end into the tv. Really lame explanation but I hope you know what I mean. Its like plugging in external speakers on a pc except your laptop is the pc and the tv is the external speaker.
