Computer Help Thread v4.0

This occurs both before and after installing drivers as well as in Safe Mode. What’s the best free app/tool to use for a hardware test or must I do the hardware test manually?

PassMark’s Burnintest will do the trick.

If it’s doing it in safemode, then it’s more than likely hardware-related. I hope it’s not anything expensive (Motherboard)

How long does an average test take? It seems like this test can loop forever and stuff like the Sound Test is rather annoying lol. Everything finishes a cycle in less than 5 minutes, but the Disk Test takes forever since it’s only going at about 1.5-2.5MB/sec and I have a 250GB HD. So far 10 minutes in and no errors…

Edit: Err… 15 minutes in and it’s complete. Giant flashing PASSED and no errors reported… so what now? I’m confused =/ I have formatted twice because I had thought there were issues when I first formatted. I’m not sure how accurate this test is, so I still don’t really know what’s wrong.

 i just got a ipod nano but i dont want to use itunes. i use this program called songbird but it goes really slow i cant seem to make the videos work. is there a better alternative to this im sorry if this was asked before.

how do you check the frames per second for pc games?

Fraps

I don’t personally have an iPod, but I know a lot of Linux users swear by Amarok. I believe Amarok 2 will be adding support for Windows and OSX, but I’m not sure when it’s supposed to be released.

how hot can a graphics card handle? i’m thinking of overclocking the 8600gt. yeah i know its my budget card.

I don’t know why but my computer seems to be running faster than usual when I visit SRK. Any ideas?

Hey, the snow is gone…

^ Still hoping to find an answer for this.

Set it to test everything 3 times or more. Preferably 10 times. Burn-ins usually run for 24 hours or more.

Only other thing I can think of is to check for a rootkit on your machine. It’s a stretch, but if it’s a virtual machine that resides in flashROM it’s somewhat… possible?

I’m wondering if this was an intentional response to Preppy’s post or just a coincidence.

Try this one guys. I have a HP Pavillion DV9000 laptop with intergrated webcam. I can use the webcam in quickplay and other applications but not windows live messenger. Everytime I try to use it to make a video call or to set it up messenger crashes. Any ideas?

Go for it, you’ll know you’ve gone too far if it freezes up or shows strange colors during gameplay.

What are the specific crash details? I may be able to suss this out given that data. =\

Hope this is right -

What versions of nevideo.ax are on your system?
Did you install a codec pack?
One commonality of that crash is an old version of nevideo.ax.

… still looking

OK, I’m betting a sandwich that you have a 3.2.x.x version of nevideo.ax on your system. You do, don’t you? Where the hell did you get it from?

I assume you are talking about Nero. If so then how do I find out what version I have and then I will report back my findings.

Thanks for the help.

EDIT: Found it but can’t tell what version it is.

EDIT2: I am sure you are right that this is the culprit. I have tried regsvr32 but that stops working too.
