Computer Help Thread v4.0

i hate customers… :’(

didn’t want to make a new thread…

where do you guys get songs from? I know torrents are great for albums, but if all I want is a single here or there I figure that’d be a hassle. any good p2p clients/programs? thanks

that kind of discussion isn’t allowed here…

anyways:

for anybody looking to get graphics cards.

http://techdisciple.com/index/?page_id=34
check it out.

Asking questions like that will probably result in unpleasant things for you.

but i dont have vista ultimate…

I use a wireless keyboard and mouse, and today for some reason they both started fucking up. They both lag really bad once every few seconds, and its really fuckin irritating. What would cause that?

Good article would give yeah rep but i cant…:lovin:

Sounds like you need to change the batteries in both of them.

music files confuse me

so my ipod is collecting dust because i ran out of room on it and i need a new phone. i decide to get a music phone. this phone apparently only sync music through window media player. so i try to convert all of my itunes music to mp3s and change it over but none of the shit i bought from itunes will work. only the stuff i got from old cds.

so… i pretty much lost like $150 in song unless im missing something. thats what i get for paying for paying for music

help me out?

this is going to be a seriously stupid chain of questions buuttt

here we go.

this coming weekend when I get payed I want to get a notebook.

I want to go through dell, but bear ryoama and a few other people say they’re bad.
But, people I know IRL say it’s a great company go through cause of their intrest rates and it’s a easy way to build credit (which is very big for me right now cause I don’t want ho-hum or crappy credit, you know?)

So, anythoughts on who to go through?

I was thinking newegg but I didn’t know if they had a credit plan like dell.

Bear suggest HP, Gateway or Compaq(iirc don’t quote me on this one), but I don’t know too much about their companies. So, I’m kind of wary of them.

but as for notebook, the reason I want them more than a desktop is basically cause I don’t want to move a desktop when I move back in the summer, notebooks are more private, and I just generally like them more because they have multiple uses and they’re good for school and traveling.

so, what notebooks are worthwhile getting?

monthly payment wise I want something inbetween 40-75.

the more memory the better, same with processor…etc…so, in general, the bigger the better.

so, any thoughts?

(again, sorry in advanced for all the stupid questions)

OKay, I’m looking to upgrade. Are SLI boards worth getting? A friend of mine thinks they’re great because to double your graphics power you only have to get another card, but I"m thinking that if I wanted to double my graphics power then I’d just buy a new card that’s more powerful. What are the pros and cons of an SLI set up?

i bought a 300 gb hd but my comp only sees it as 232gb, how do i make the rest appear?

Dell actually does make a good product (I’ve never bought one because I build my own computers). So if you’re looking for an affordable laptop, I’d consider them, as well as Acer, Compaq, and HP.

With an SLI board, you can buy one videocard now and then later when it’s not so fast anymore you can get a second one and raise your performance. The drawback is that by the time most cards get outdated and people want to upgrade, its hard to find a second identical card because nvidia or ati already have newer products that have phased it out. Also, it’s better to go with a single “new” or “high-end” card than two lesser cards because usually the high-end card will outperform two older cards in SLI. It’s also important to consider that to use SLI, your power supply must have enough pci-express connectors and watts to power all the cards. I’d say if you’re not going to start out with dual-cards, you’ll probably upgrade to a faster single-card than going SLI.

What OS are you using? XP used to have an issue with this, but if you’re using the latest servive pack you shouldn’t have a problem. To get around this, just make two partitions on the harddrive instead of one. Then install windows on the first one and format the second one but leave it blank. It’ll show up in “My Computer” as if it were a second harddrive, but you’ll have all of your space usable.

Don’t bother with Compaq/HP if you want to run XP. If the system has Vista on it they won’t supply XP drivers.

Trying to fix my moms computer

Ok, I bought my moms a computer a few years ago and it’s slowly but surely crapping out on her. You’ve got my brother downloading misc software on to it from limewire and my little cousins and other people doing the same. The thing was riddled with viruses and spyware.

For the most part, I’ve managed to clean everything up as far as viruses and adware goes. I used symantec antivirus corporate addition and Ad-aware for that. I’ve used VoptXP to defrag it a few time and I used Security Task Manager to clean up the rest of the crap that’s left over. I’ve gotten rid of microsoft services that I know she won’t be using and I can’t think of what else to do. But for some reason, it’s still slow as hell. She has plenty of HDD space, her CP usage% is low. But this thing still runs like molases. I’ve also done a scan disk cleanup.

The only thing I can think of that needs to be done is clean up the regedit and empty out the prefetch cache. I used to know how to do it, but I haven’t done it in so long, that I forgot how. So could anyone give me some advice on what to do next to get this thing in top working condition?

If you need anymore info let me know. Also, if you have advice on some good apps that I could install that will kind of auto maintain this thing, that would be good to. One more thing, a lot of her files have that windows compression crap on them. You know, the thing where file names show up in blue font instead of black. Is there anyway I could uncompress all those files at once? Because it would be damn near impossible for me to hunt them all down and do it one by one. This thing is pretty old, but it suits her needs. I live to far away to keep it maintained and she is usually to busy and doesn’t really know how to do it herself.

System specs:
Compaq Presario 6000
AMD 64 Processor 2800+ 1.8Ghz
192MB Ram (i’m sure that might be a big part of the problem right here)
BIOSTAR MOBO

Deep freeze? Or whatever that program is that loads a preset image at every boot.

If all she uses it for is email and browsing, install Linux on it. If she has some applications that require Windows then I guess you’re stuck with it, then. I gotta say, I’m surprised with Ubuntu Linux and its ease of use. Learning to use it is no more difficult than learning to use Windows. My build of choice, however is OpenSuSE

Maybe try blowing it away. I work I.T. for a large company and when machines start to crawl the best thing to do is wipe the hd and start fresh. do a clean install of the os and then get all your updates and drivers needed takes time but the change is astoronomical it is often like having a new pc again. and yes that small amout of ram isn’t helping any. XP will run on 128mb ram but i strongly suggest at least 256mb if you cant make the jump to the preferred 512mb+. good luck

Yeah, that’s what I wanted to do in the first place. But for whatever reason or another, the backup copy of XP that’s supposed to be preloaded on the HDD isn’t there and I don’t have all of my aquired software on me. I keep forgetting to bring it even though I know this needs to be done everytime I come here.

I would torrent another copy, but she has this strange DSL connection that disconnects anytime I try to download something major. I guess I could try again. I could also try to get her to spring for some better memory. What about the compressed file thing? Any advice for that?

Aspi.sys

I’ve had this that this problem showed up about 2 weeks ago. After a week of me thinking it was just my computer getting bogged down by adware or crap I decided to just format since that usually solves any problems I’d usually have performance-wise. Now that I have formatted though, the problem is still there and I only just found out that it was ASPI.SYS that was causing the problem with the aid of Process Explorer.

My Task Manager only tells me that my System is the cause of 20-30% CPU Usage which internally is ASPI.SYS that’s the cause of this. If that weren’t enough, Deferred Procedure Calls and Hardware Interrupts make up the other 20-30% pushing my CPU Usage to the 50-60% mark. This occurs after formatting twice and installing all drivers only. No internet connection, nothing. Just driver installation.

Is there a way to narrow down what piece of hardware is the root of this problem? I’ve tried updating my ASPI to no avail and it seems like it might be something else, but I’m not sure how to find out. I am running Windows XP SP2 currently and this problem is recent. I have not installed any new hardware since I got this computer over a year ago so that can’t be a cause. I also have no hardware conflicts as far as I can see in my Device Manager either.

Does the problem happen before you install the drivers, or only afterwards?

Try running the system in Safemode and see if it still happens. If it does, the problem is probably a hardware problem. You need to run a hardware test to determine what hardware is failing.

ASPI.SYS is a driver for accessing IDS and SCSI drives, so I do not think it would still be problematic after a full wipe and re-install. It’s probably thrashing your system trying to interact with a SCSI or IDE device like a DVD or CD-ROM drive that isn’t responding, but that’s all just a guess based on what you described. A full hardware test is the only way to track down intermittently working devices.
