Computer Help Thread v4.0

Thanks for the input, the cases I have seen are solid. Hopefully they have them in stock next time I stop by.

As for DVI, they don’t carry audio signals. Does your TV have an audio input? I think you would have to run audio seperately.

You should be really happy with one of them. They were a breath of fresh air compared to the few coolermaster cases Ive had in the past.

I thought that would be the answer to, but I can only use a straight audio in through component and VGA input, cant access the audio in when Im on an HDMI channel. Its confusing me, I think Ive tried every conceivable setup but nothing gives me sound. :S

Hey guys,

So i had THIS computer bought for me for x-mas. Is this one pretty good?
(i could return it and use it towards something else if i need to, im hoping this one is alright though)

I want to be able to play team fortress 2 and Starcraft 2 when it comes out.

If this one is alright for that:

Is 2 gigs of ram enough?

Any video card recomendations? i have about 200-250 to spend. (unless i really need to spend more?)

Thanks in advance for your help.

So my laptop’s harddrive reads 8.35 gigs out of a total 69.2. When I bought the laptop, it was a total of 80gb at 5400RPM I believe. I’m almost positive last weekend I easily had above 45 gigs. I remember doing a large system update because I noticed that I didn’t do one since I received it in August.

My question is, what took up all the space? I don’t think the updates should be taking up that many gigs. I don’t download any music, movies, or games from the internet. It’s in really good shape, but I have no idea what changed. Thoughts?

that’s a good computer.

2 gigs of ram is enough. most games right now recommends 2 gig.

the 8800GT for video card. it’s around $200 ish to $300 depending on whether you want 256mb or 512mb but its worth the money. make sure your power supply can run the card.

if you need to go cheaper then the 7900GTX sounds good. i don’t know the current price.

First, the processor in the computer is lackluster at best. I understand the computer is prebuilt but it seems to really lacking in the horsepower department.

Next, the 7900gtx is no longer in production, but you can maybe find it on ebay. However, if your buying it online from some sort of online retailer expect to pay a lot because the prices seem to not be updated. By the way the 8800gt is an awesome card and would suit you well for a while

any recommendations for memory brands?

Corsair, Mushkin, and Crucial are solid in my book. Whatever you do don’t get OZ it is garbage as everyone I know has had trouble with it.

OZ? do you mean OCZ? they’re really REALLY good.

Crucial is overpriced for the money, as they’re slightly more expensive than Corsair, but not as good. Mushkin is really popular gaming ram.

best brands IMHO…
G.Skill
Corsair
OCZ
Patriot
Mushkin
… no particular order.

Second tier:
Crucial
Kingston

Geez man, yeah I meant OCZ, but I have had huge problems with them and so have many acquaintances because they’re is almost always a problem with the timing and voltage not being what they promise and as a result when im trying to OC issues have happened. The brand of ram has just been bad to me, but corsair and crucial have never let me down :lovin:

i dunno. i had a set of their “value” ram in one of my systems, and i got a c2d from 1.8GHz to 3.0GHz and a 5C temp increase. Shit’s running fine now for just under a year.

on a side note:

me and a buddy of mine are working on a site called techdisciple. it’s going to be a forum about computer tech work, modding, gadgets, and games. join… please

I haven’t had problems with their Platinum RAM. Overclocks quite well, and it’s supposed to since it was designed for it.

I keep getting this BSOD it shows a bmcwl6.sys, i have hp laptop with vista…any know what it might be?

Is that file (bmcwl6.sys) on your system? What’s it for?

It looks to me like its from the broadcom wireless driver or adapter thats installed on my labtop…i already tried uninstalling it and re-installing but i still get that bsod at least once a day…

do you have dreamscene on? when i had dreamscene on my wireless driver would cause me to get a BSOD… i deactivated it, and haven’t had any problems yet.

I dont want to sound like moron…but whats dreamscene?

it’s the animated background thing for vista ultimate

hmm looks like preppy, mixah & I can use our know how on repairing computers via text instead of seeing idiot customers. Being a tech is cool & all but the majority of people I meet are idiots that have the slightest idea of backing up your crap regardless of situation especially when helping people remotely
