You should open it up and take a look inside. Sometimes a connection comes loose or breaks and causes weird behavior.
naw its not connection. I double checked everything, tried different ports and on a seperate pci/sata card too. same shit…wont format. will try different computer later today…
how does hard drive warranty work anyway ? I bought it last year from bestbuy but dont have the receipt. dont all hard drives come with 5 year warranty and all I have to do is send it back to the company and they will send a new one ?
seagate gives 5 years
most other companies give 3 years
some shitty companies (eg. simple tech), give 1 year)
if you don’t have the receipt, i don’t know if any of them will take it back, unless there’s a manufacturer’s stamp on there telling that it was made within the warranty. you obviously couldn’t have bought it before it was made.
What brand is it?
Although I think you are correct, most HDD manu’s will have at least a three year warranty. However I think you may need a receipt.
:amazed: Really jk i’ll just pop the sucker open then.
Brand is pretty important. When I RMAed both Western Digital and Seagate drives (and Maxtor which is now Seagate), they didn’t require receipts. You can use their webform, put in the drives serial # and get information on the drive’s warranty and instructions on how to RMA.

When I say codec packs are the devil, I’m really f-cking serious. MMSwitch is dead, that FFDShow is ancient and replaced by FFDShow Tryouts, the Ligos MPEG elements aren’t supported on Vista, the Ligos Audio Codec shouldn’t be registered on Vista, that DivX version is ancient, and Nero should be on top of their issues.
So generally 90% of those above errors (which are something like 80% or so of the issues for those components) are totally avoidable if codec packs weren’t installing sh*t (and I mean that in the fecal incompetent sense) to your system.
I thought the above might be interesting as an FYI for those of you doing computer maintenance. shrug I <3 stable computers.
adding to this when it starts up the welcome screen file plays. but then anything after that cuts off.
how would i go about disabling the onboard soundcard?
Is there any way to read .dmp files?
My computer was been flashing the BSOD recently…and I can’t see why because the BSOD flashes for less than a second then restarts. A friend told me that the .dmp files list the possible driver issues.
Thx in advance…
jumper on the mobo or in the bios are the two most common ways to disable it.
A question regarding the codec pack post…
Is CCCP bad about installing extra crap? It has a lot of common codecs, but you mentioning the extra stuff has me worried. Would it just be a better idea to download each codec separately? I just enjoy the convenience of the codec pack…
On that note, does anyone have an idea to play HD .mkv files? I have a HD video file that’s in MKV format, and the h2664 or whatever codec I’ve downloaded doesn’t seem to help the stuttering. Any ideas?
I’ve worked a little to make sure CCCP doesn’t do anything bad - they’re one of the two pack makers I’ve personally worked with/advised. Codec packs are generally a bad idea, but CCCP is “OK” as far as anything goes. Plus they’re actually probably legal, which is somewhat of a rarity.
But given that I know of a number of RETAIL vendors who have buggy codecs out there, installing codecs you don’t need is generally dumb. CCCP is probably the best of the horrible lot. If the pack was produced before 2007, it’s crap. If it’s updated frequently, it might be OK. K-Lite still does stupid shit. Any pack warez-ing it up is usually dumb.
preppy i have a q, are you by any chance getting the intel bundle this yr?
I admit to not even vaguely understanding what an “intel bundle” is. What are we talking about?
Ok, I’m having minor problems with Firefox again.
After updating to the newest version that came out 2 days ago, my Amazon.com and eBay don’t work.
I get some internal 500 error. I’ve had this before, but I forgot how I fixed it…
And it’s only those 2 pages. Every other webpage works. Does anyone know how to fix it?
Thanks in advance, much appreciated.
Intel tends to have a special deal every year (forgot what the program was called) of a CPU and Mobo combo for really cheap. I believe that’s what he’s talking about, but I’m probably wrong.
I have a problem, I downloaded some anime and it doesn’t play the english subtitles. I already tried installing vobsub and tried different players such as media player classic, gom and others. The media files are RMVB. So how can I apply english subtitles to a Japanese anime?
500 errors are on the server end. Maybe you’re accessing the sites at bad times.
