Computer Help Thread v4.0

Snagged me a Asus A8V-XE MB for that amd fx-64 proc i got now need a decent vid-card to pop onto it. Any suggestions? Also any ram suggestions would be greatly appreaciated!!!

is it PCI-E?

what’s your budget?

nvidia 7600GT - $60-75
nvidia 7900GT - $100-140
nvidia 8500GT - kinda lame, but it’s cheap fora DX10
nvidia 8800GTS - best bang for the buck, imho… $200 or so

the 512 MB version of the GTS comes out in december for like $225, which is supposed to run as fast as the 8800GTX

What do y’all think about this??
I just snagged this today! Actually like a an hour ago.
Just got it in now.
I got it since:

  1. Friend told me it’s better to just use a vid card; instead of using an intergrated one(was using a 256mb GeForce 6150 before).

  2. It was only a ONE DAY sale. And it was around my budget.

  3. Wanted a vid card anyways. Just incase later on I decided to go back on WoW(which I most likely will very soon!)

good brand… DX10… good price… low end card… aka, you wont see much of a performance gain compared to a 7600 or so, except that you have DX10.

so my ladyfriend spilled milk all over her laptop. i had a small heart attack and told her to take everything out and wipe it down and shit, but she said it would be fine and kept using it. its now two days later and everything is fine except the arrow keys, is there any hope?

So with all these new games coming out (UT3, CoD4, Assassin’s Creed, etc.) I’m thinking it’s time for me to upgrade AGAIN. Thought I’d post my list so far and see what fellow users think of it…

Motherboard:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813188019

This is the part I’m probably the most unsure of. SLI support is not a concern for me because I don’t have the money for two $500 video cards. This board has all the features I want, and I read the 680i chipset is still going strong…

Processor:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115017

This processor seems amazing to me for the price. Quad-core may not be totally utilized now, but I think later down the line games and apps will use those four cores.

RAM

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820146565

Another amazing deal. Am I screwing myself by choosing this RAM though? I did that in my last system by choosing Corsair ValueSELECT RAM…this is obviously better, but do I need to go even farther?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130072

Gotta have the beefy video card. I’d do SLI if I had another 550 to spend…

CPU Cooler

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118019

Figured I’d get a nice CPU cooler if I plan to overclock the quad core.

I’m picking up hard drives on Black Friday and re-using my current case and PSU (an OCZ 700W). Other than the items listed, that’d basically be my new system.

I have two concerns; one, is the setup fine. Two, will new technology come out right after I purchase it? I made the mistake of buying an Athlon XP 3800+ right before Intel came out and kicked the crap out of AMD with their new procs. Do I run the risk of buying on the end of multiple product cycles?

Any feedback, please let me know.

probably not… open up the case and reseat the entire keyboard… if that doesn’t help, then it’s probably done.

good shit, and that will last you a bit. however, i suggest wait until after the holidays to get a GTX. next month, the GTS 512 is coming out and it’s going to drop the price of the normal GTX, especially since they claim that the 512 GTS is going to be faster than the 368GTX, i can imagine that the price might drop 100 or so. if you must get it now, then do so, but i’d hold off. the GTX is still too weaksauce of a card to be worht that. while the best card out now, it still can’t cope with crysis WELL, and that’s what the benchmarkings are going off of nowadays. great system overall.

one thing… i don’t particularly like EVGA boards, because they’re wayyyy too much for what they’re worth.

if you can shell another hun. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128068

that’s one of the best mobos out… along with asus’ striker extreme, but you’ll need to change the RAM… if you’re looking for performance though…

if you can’t, then a better bang for the buck is this mobo
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128068

a few dollars cheaper… you get 2 more SATA options, more RAID options, faster standard memory, so upgrading is possible, 2 more USB, firewire, and a better chipset.

Two things you MUST do when picking out a new system:

  1. Figure your budget
  2. Figure what exactly you will be using the computer for

I guess for no. 2 you want to play “new games”, but there’s no budget.

Even now, though, I can tell you that you want an 8800GT card.

http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3140&p=9

the difference in crysis is pretty big though…

i heard something like FPS went from 40 something on GTX to under 30 on GT… not good.

You could be right, but from this review I’d say at moderate resolutions the 8800GT is a competitor in performance and the winner in value.

http://www.vr-zone.com/articles/Nvidia_GeForce_8800_GT_Review/5369-7.html

definitely. i’m not disagreeing, but those games in that example are the peak of this last generation of games… crysis is the begining of the next generation in terms of graphics… however… i think the game is garbage… lol

Nevermind. Returned the vid card and got more ram instead.
No real big need of the vid card at the moment.
I couldn’t let this offer past me by!!

Mannnn… Fry’s looked like freakin’ LAX today/tonight! O_O

Can someone recommend me a really good/decent 512MB PCI-Express X16 video card from newegg?
I’m currently just running on a 256MB GeForce 6150 Intergrated vid card right now.
My price ranges are up to $150 or whatever prices seems like a good deal!
I don’t know much about video cards as much.
I’m mainly using it to watch videos and also to run WoW at it’s highest/near highest settings.

www.newegg.com

Here’s my spec:

Windows Microsoft XP
Home Edition
Version 2002

Abit NF-M2 nView (NVIDIA GeForce 6150) Mobo

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual
Core Processor 4200+
2.20 GHz
1.93 MB of RAM

wait a month and get the 512 version of the 8800GT

Pci-e and might wait do vid-card since you say new card is going too drop. Might scrap parts from my gf comp which ain’t up and running yet. I diffently know i need too snag a new power supply the one in my current rig is doing near death noises.

cool

also

ram suggestions…

OCZ > Corsair > Crucial > G.Skill > PNY > Kingston… and i’m forgetting a good brand in there… but the top three remain

power supplies… i recommend the coolermaster real powers or anything by antec or ocz… but the best ones are PC power and cooling, fortron, and seasonic…

For RAM the rule of thumb is quantity over quality. But if you absolutely must get the very best, the G. Skill has served me really good for gaming PCs, and I’ve used Corsair for the longest time on pretty much any random PC. Mushkin used to be a great brand, but I don’t know how well they stand up now since I haven’t used a stick of that since SDRAM PC133mhz

Stay away from Kingston. The return rate is very high. As a Frys cage stocker, I remember Crucial having a high return rate as well, but I hear the high end sticks do very good. I personally don’t like having to spend a lot of money just to get a quality product, but that’s just my opinion.

Thanks for the input guys. That X38 board looks sick, but a little too pricey for me, especially considering I’d have to switch to DDR3 for my RAM needs. I may stick with the eVGA board, but the MSI one seems decent as well, for a lower price:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130081

EDIT: Just wanted to mention overclocking as well. I plan to overclock the quad-core a bit, considering I’m getting the CPU cooler. What boards are good for that?

Another RAM question; the Crucial ballistix seems like a solid choice, but I wonder if I should spend a bit more and get the Corsair XMS2 brand; my only problem with this is the newegg reviews talking a lot about dead sticks and other issues. What do you guys think?

Hey mixah, is Patriot any good? May be the brand you’re forgetting…

EDIT: Whoa…this RAM looks sick.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227231

And one last thing; you guys recommend me not getting a new videocard until after Christmas? The 8800GTX’s should go down right? I’m just worried about waiting longer and having more parts go obsolete…but that’s the nature of the industry I guess…

Happy Black Friday. Speaking of Kingston DDR Ram, I have another scrub problem.

I just got a 1gb DIMM from Office Depot earlier today, I wanted to get 2 so I could upgrade my PC to the max amount it’ll allow presently, 2GB.

Specs:
http://review.zdnet.com/desktops/emachines-t5048/4507-3118_16-32081796.html?tag=ut

So I get home and try to put the new RAM in and…it doesn’t fit…? The little slot thing is about a centimeter away from where my present 512MB DIMM’s is.

What I bought was one of these:

Both 184-pin, I think
Both DDR (meaning, one’s not DDR 2)
Both even PC3200

What am I doing wrong?

If you really don’t want to wait then don’t. The performance increase will be marginal, so if you’re really that anxious to get up and going then it might be worth it to ya.
