Computer Help Thread v4.0

I’ll try to explain.

It gets stuck at the screen that detects the HD i.e when I hit tab it shows the HD make and model number but when it goes onto the POST screen it stops at the bit that says Primary IDE Drive: LBA **** 2 and has the flashing _ underneath the 2. The keyboard doesn’t respond either. I have updated the BIOS too. The PC is a HP and runs Windows 98 and has a VIA ApolloPro 133 chipset. The HD I am trying to use was manufactured in 2003.

Just try the hard drives by themselves instead of both connected together at the same time. More than likely, one of them will work. If you can get Windows to work again, you can update the firmware on the bad drive and that might work.

If neither one works, then try putting a CD-ROM or DVD drive on each channel and see if it detects that. If it doesn’t detect the CD-ROM drive, then your motherboard might be bad. If it does detect the drive, double check your Hard drives again (just to make sure you had them cabled right, because having two unrelated hard drives with the exact same problem is highly suspect) and if they still don’t work check them out for viruses.

The last time I had Chernobyl I infected three drives before I realized that I was infected and there was nothing wrong with my hardware. A CMOS wipe and a debug of the drives killed it, but I lost all my data. You can try to do a “fdisk /mbr” to clean the drive and potentially keep all your old data, but it doesn’t always work.

The old HD doesn’t work. The one that came with the borrowed pc does and boots up no probs. I was just thinking that it might be a compatability issue as the old HD has windows xp and the borrowed one has windows 98. I appreciate the time you are taking to read my posts and to respond in great detail so thanks.

EDIT: I have tried them seperatley and both at the same time. It is the old HD causing trouble.

No problem. I love computer problems! It’s what i do…

No software compatibility issue would cause the drive to freeze up in the BIOS while it’s being detected, so you might try to flash the firmware it if you can. That might overwrite it if it got corrupted somehow. That way you can at least have a shot at keeping your data if it’s not backed up. Look up the latest firmware on the manufacturer’s site for the flash file and instructions.

It didn’t change my hompage. It just doesn’t go to the web site I type in.
Whatever I type, it sends me to that same site.

http://www.serial99.com/?www.google.com
http://www.serial99.com/?www.asjkfkrhgrt.com

In bold is what I type & then the http://www.serial99.com/? always shows up before the url I type in & I’m sent to that site.

EDIT:
The “?”, I deleted it from the url http://www.serial99.com/www.google.com & now it says:
Not Found
The requested URL /www.google.com was not found on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Hey, just have a question about running a game on pc. Recently bought Virtual on for it, but after installing I get a popup saying it failed to start because it can’t find the sgl.dll. Any suggestions? Using XP btw if that’s of any relevance.

As re serial99–

try reinstalling?

Alot of people are saying hijack this will fix your problem. However if it doesn’t somebody posted a solution on another forum.

*Hi,

this oneis easy to fix.
Open your regedit and search for serials99.com, you will find the key somewhere down at: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\Prefixes
www will have http://www.serials99.com/? instead of the normal http://
Modify the key to change back the beaviour of the browser.

Of course, mozilla doesnt have this problem, they dont rely on registry for basics like this and follow the RFC’s for writing code instead of rely on registry horror.

After you fixed it, scan your system as the others suggested, i found nothing anymore, but it is a safe and sound thing to do no matter what. Moreso when you are using illegal software, or searches for getting free rregistry and license keys atleast. Many of the sites saying they give you those keys in reality are hackers and scum.

Regards and good luck.*

Let me know if it works.

What’s the best video program for watching videos? Like window media player, divx etc… But i’m looking for a vid program that doesn’t take much memory nor space at all, you know what i mean?

GOM Player

http://www.gomplayer.com/main.html

I like VLC

tried and failed. still keep getting the same message.

have you tried recovery console? put winxp cd in the system, hit ‘r’ for recover console, and then chkdsk \r

I tried running WinXP Home Edition(Real/Legit copy with key) on a reformatted HD then upgrading to SP2.
Problem is everything I do this, my computer will NEVER boot up to Windows anymore.
It just goes to a “Start Windows Normally / Start from last known configuration / etc…” DOS window.
Tried all the options. All it does is try to get Windows load up screen to boot, but then it just restarts and goes back to the same DOS window. Over and over.

I’m currently running the same WinXP Home Edition, but just without ANY updates at all.
Seems to be stable for now.
Everything seems to be right and all now.

Any clues why it does this?

What’s your computer specification?

So many different things can cause this behavior. However Mixah’s suggestion to another poster may also fix your problem.

Windows Microsoft XP
Home Edition
Version 2002

Abit NF-M2 nView (NVIDIA GeForce 6150) Mobo

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual
Core Processor 4200+
2.20 GHz
960 MB of RAM

Never tried that, but I really don’t wanna risk having that threatening screen to show again.
It happened everytime I try to upgrade to SP2.
After the finish process of installing the SP2, it tells me to restart the comp.
Well after it does restart, Windows never loads up ever again and just goes to that DOS window.
So I got really frustrated and just decided to reformat the HD all over.

Try following this guide:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/878474/

This seems to clear things up. I can now type in a url & go to the specified site instead of going to serial99.

Hijackthis seems to do what was said in your post, so I’m sure it would’ve worked.

Thanks for the help guys.
I still need to scan my comp, but I can’t atm since I’m in class.
