Wow, I am completely perplexed. The amount of confusion involved in this scenario makes my head spin. I am in complete awe and have no explanation as to why I have found out what I have found out. Maybe someone here does, but I sure as fuck don’t.
So I had the problem with programs not running because of DirectInput errors. Turns out, it didn’t have shit to do with DirectX, the programs, or anything else on my system. The cause of the problems – my USB headphones. That’s right, my USB headphones cause programs to have DirectInput errors. I cannot explain it, I cannot begin to.
Plain and simple, if these headphones are not plugged in, these programs will run. The controller will work and I have no problems. I can plug the headphones in while the game is running, and it won’t crash, but there will not be any sound. Yet if I try to close and re-run the game, it crashes. Take the headphones out, game runs. Yeah, confuses the fuck out of me just typing it.
Another problem with these headphones is that Windows will not recognize them on startup. To make them work, you have to plug them in after Windows has fully loaded. This will make them work, but cause certain games and programs to crash until the headphones are unplugged. The headphones did not come with any drivers of their own, and the brand is not listed on Logitech’s website.
Anybody got a clue? Or do I have the only PC in the world that does this?
uninstall and reinstall them completely. did they work at one point, and stop? that could be it.
USB headphones are really tricky like that… i had one work with skype for a year…and then i decided to try to play oblivion with them on, because i got home late one night, and boom… they stopped working after that, even with skype… i reinstalled, and they worked with skype again. i eventually sold them for $5 and a coke…
The headphones are Logitech, and I’ve found that there are no external drivers available for them. They run on drivers that come with Windows. So that’s no dice. And this was going on even before I installed these games. It was just yesterday that I found the headphones were causing it.
I’ll give ZSNES as an example of what’s going on. There’s a key it puts in the registry first time you run it. Delete this key, and you’ll have to run it twice (first time it writes it back then closes itself). This is if neither controller or headphones are plugged in, it’ll run each time after that.
Put the controller in, and you have to delete the key each time you want to run ZSNES. It will not run with the controller if that key is already in the registry from the previous use. This though, is random. Sometimes it’ll run with the controller regardless. Add the headphones to it though, and it’s not running period.
i was sitting here, browsing or something, and it just turned off. it won’t even post when i turn it on. no beeps or anything. so now what? how do i go about diagnosing this nightmare?
My first guess is the power supply failed. If you have an extra one you could swap them. If you don’t you can get PSU’s cheap ($25-$30) just to test if that is the problem.
i’m thinking that your usb ports are getting overloaded. there’s two fixes…
get a new motherboard
get a PCI expansion card with USB ports.
for whatever reason, sometimes even the best mobos have shitty usb controllers, and you can’t use all the ports… i had this happen to me on my last system with an MSI board. it had six ports, and if you go more than 4, the computer would just hang, and nothing would work. it would work with six unpowered devices though. unpowered devices almost don’t exist… it would work if i had six compact flash card readers in there… but if i put more than four cards, none would work. but all six would be detected, so long as tehre were no cards. random, right?
i’m going to start using a bluetooth dictation headset for translation soon but apparently the only way to get windows xp to recognize bluetooth devices is to update to service pack 2? there are major disadvantages to doing this huh? especially vis a vis piracy right… have workarounds been found for most of its adverse effects?
My system has 8 USB plugs. 4 mounted on the MB, an expansion in the rear with two, and two in the front. Both expansions are connected by a cable to assigned plugs on the MB. The controller and headphones are plugged into the front.
Damndest thing. I booted up earlier, and this time the damn thing recognizes the headphones without me having to unplug and plug back in. But I’ll try moving them later and see what happens.
Unplug everything, including the power cable.
Hold in the power button for 10 seconds to clear residual power.
See if it posts/beeps
If it doesn’t. Open it up and remove all cards, memory and the processor. See if you get a no processor beep. If you do, add the processor. If not, the board is dead. If you add the processor and the board doesn’t attempt to post/beep, the the processor might be bad.
If you get a no memory beep after adding the processor, then add the memory. If you add the memory and the board doesn’t attempt to post/beep, the the memory might be bad. If it does try to post/beeps, then…
add a card, like your video or sound card and test them all, one at a time in the same fashion until you’ve added them all or you’ve discovered your culprit.
Do the same thing with the IDE/SATA drives your CD/DVD ROM drives and your harddrives. I’d add the primary harddrive last so the machine doesn’t try to boot into Windows. Test them all one by one until you find your culprit or the machine boots.
It’s not uncommon, especially for mass-manufactured PC’s like Dells, or Compaqs to go through this process and find absolutely nothing wrong.
i got a ZENSTONE kinda like an IPOD. use it for 3 month now and when i go to charge it on a laptop. it was doing fine until i try to close the hardware so i can unplug the USB. when i go to close it, it say not now, so i unplug it anyway. when i go to turn on my ZENSTONE, it won’t TURN ON.
but when i go charge it, it’ll charge… but when i go turn it on, it won’t turn on…
My wife has one of those and I haven’t had any problems out of it. My solution (other than searching the Creative help forums) is to reset it and copy your songs onto it again if you can. Hope that helps
yee mann i wass thinkin the samee thingg. butt to reset it, i need a little needel to push it through the little hole rite…/ u know wat im talkin about/
