Computer Help Thread v4.0

Thanks for the information. It’s a desktop if that matters and it’d be brand new out of the box from dell.

^^On a dell desktop it should be easy if using Slartibartfast’s advice.
Delete the old partition, create a new one, and install XP on that partition.

Yeah there is much better driver support for desktops, shouldn’t be an issue. You can manage partitions during the install process.

On a desktop, the key to enter the BIOS is usually DEL or F2.

So after not having internet for two months; Im finally back online; I found that alot of the images viewed online are bad quality, very bad infact. But I don’t recall changing the settings, so I have no idea why the quality is so bad. can anyone help?
I would really appreciate it.

So I just got a Vista comp, and I want to transfer some files from my laptop which runs XP. I don’t want to do it through the network, because it’s 2 gigs of files, and my wireless connection is kinda patchy. Is there any way I can set up some network by just connecting an RJ45 to both of them?

A crossover cable would work. If you’re handy with RJ45 crimping just rearrange the pairs on a regular ethernet cable like so:

I like to make GIFs using Adobe Imagready.

I recently bought a new computer and i dont want vista to crash with this software that im not sure is compatible with vista. It converts the FLV (flash) format files I download off youtube to mov/wmp/avi so i can gif them in imageready.

is there a way I can get imagready to recognize FLV files as a format and open them without having to convert?

So I tried to rip some music from a CD and a menu popped up in XP allowing me to change my settings to a higher bit rate. But that no longer happens, how do I access that menu again?

Just out of curiosity what type of connection do you have? I remember when I was in high school, a local dial-up ISP started touting their “high speed dial-up” when in reality, all they did was degrade online image quality to shit so that web pages would load more quickly. I  at people who actually used it.

Sweet, av:tup:

Man, you will not believe this shit that I found out from my provider. After pulling an all nighter (literally, 8pm to 8am) trying every option I could: changing registry information, downloading drivers, etc etc etc, after spending an hour with a Dell Tech Support I called my provider wondering if they could give me an answer (try explaining to an IT pro that you think your modem is making your image quality shit, they’ll laugh at you): they PURPOSELY make the modem have the image quality poor so it saves space and loads quicker; there is no way to change it.

I thought I should also mention that I have to have a Content Control option removed just to look at porn. I ask you, what grown man has to do that in this day and age?

I miss Canada…

Hey guys, having some problems with my video cards s-video out. I’ve got a 4 pin connector that runs from my card (Geforce 6200) to my tv which has a 4 pin connector as well. I’ve gone into my video card settings and tried to detect the display but it only recognizes my computer monitor. I’ve even made sure that the “Force TV Detection” box is checked and rebooted to try and get the computer to recognize it. It won’t display the “Clone” option only single display is shown since it doesn’t know the TV is there. Do I need a certain driver or some other piece of software to make my computer recognize it? I’ve run out of ideas and spent the last couple hours trying to figure this out. Thanks in advance for any help.

Ugh… so my computer problems continue.

I was watching something on my computer and about five minutes in the video freezes, the screen goes black, and then the audio begins to loop. The computer itself doesn’t even show that it’s thinking and is completely locked up, forcing me to do a hard reset. After I restarted and tried to watch the same file again, the same thing happened.

What REALLY pisses me off is that I reformatted last night, so it’s probably my video card or mobo starting to go. Any ideas?

I really don’t want to drop cash on a new mother board because I’d have to buy a new video card as well. My current mobo still has AGP (using a 256MB GeForce 6800 GT), so if I bought a newer one I’d likely have to buy another video card, making me drop a shit load of cash that I’m kind of tight on right now.

EDIT: So I just restarted for the third time now. All I was doing was browsing the net and talking to a friend on AIM and the same exact thing happened. Not really sure what’s going on. What’s strange is that the computer ran fine overnight while I slept, but just now it’s giving me trouble.

Does it help if you turn off system-wide video hardware acceleration ALL THE WAY?

It doesn’t seem to be a video card issue… cus if I don’t run Azureus my computer seems to run fine. Guess I’ll try a different bittorrent program. It’s weird because I was having a similar problem with BitComet before and downloaded Azureus, which fixed the problem.

I installed Windows XP Professional Clean on my Gateway Model MX6447. The CPU is running at 2.0ghz. This computer however randomly slows down and at times freezes for a bit. Startup also takes an unusually long time. Startup also took forever on my previous installation of windows xp and vista on this computer. How do I fix this problem?

got a new mobo for my bro’s computer. the fan is REALLY loud and we cant get the internet to work on it. any tips?

Do you have the correct motherboard drivers installed?

help plz?

That’s really vague, you’re going to have to provide some more details if anyone is going to be able to help you out.

I’m assuming yes, I downloaded all of the drivers from the laptop’s webpage. :wasted:
