Computer Help Thread v4.0

I’m going to recommend option 2. I used to rock WMP Classic and it always took effort to get different video types to work. VLC seems to support damn near everything right off of the installation, making life a lot easier.

For what content type? What codec does it specifically say you need?

Switching players is a lame lame way to try to work around codec issues. It doesn’t solve anything long term: we need to teach people how to solve these - and more importantly for content providers to stop being stupid with codecs.

Switch players because you want to, not to chase some magic codec. There’s 800+ codecs, “your favorite player” sure as f-ck doesn’t support them all.

hey folks! managed to fix the problem i was having with my comp. i DID have a virus and guess what??

DAT NORTON was exactly got in the way of understanding that i had it. i guess that the virus had taken over Norton and used it to prohibit a lot of administrator actions, from there it was almost impossible to find. i had to completely uninstall norton (which took an hour and a half alone because the virus kept changing the registry and i had to stop it every time with spybot. then i dled AVG and annihilated the virus that way. got my fucking search and programs back bitchezz!! sweet!

Nice! Don’t got DAT NORTON? hahah

I usually use VLC and it’s my favorite, but certain anime won’t display subtitles on it, so I had to download MPC with two patches (fdshow and directvobsub) in order to get subtitles to play. Sometimes it works fine, but other times it shows subtitles and has no sound. As for the other questions, I’m not sure, I’ll look into it and post again when I find out.

Excel Question:

Why is it when I copy my work from one excel document with dates in it. Along with other things i.e currency using the copy command it pastes the wrong dates in the field.

I.E 3/2/07 becomes 3/1/02 Whats more weird is both spreedsheets retain the same formula yet the date is total different even with the same formula. I got no clue why.

But when I copy then paste in notepad then paste in excel theres no problem.

Or if I paste from the clipboard it pastes ok.

Sorry just a weird question for you excel junkies.

That’s one way of looking at it. Realistically, though, how many of those 800 is the average person likely to come into contact with? Since I made the switch to VLC, I haven’t had trouble with any of the filetypes I’ve used. I can understand wanting to do things the right way as you pesonally see them, but trying to discredit something that has a high probability of solving the user’s issue just because you dislike it seems kind of petty.

  1. That’s not a realistic question, though.

As a personal hobby, I support end users and major corporations through problems in multimedia. I don’t give a f-ck what player they use, and it angers me that you think I would care. Sorry, but I’ve been dealing with people stuck with abandonware codecs recently (that no 3rd party player/solution supports), and what I said earlier is some of the best and brightest thoughts on the matter. You’re welcome to come up with a more efficient and effective solution, but “change to player Y” any time a user has problems with player X is dumb.

What I said was magnificently accurate and has stood the test of time.

Please note that Media Player Classic (MPC, what he was referring to) is not Windows Media Player or Microsoft-produced anyways (it’s a sourceforge project by GabeST and co). MPC has bugs that break aspects of Windows Media Player on Vista. So the idea that I’d be ‘petty’ about this (or anything) is just offensive and dumb. I love all players equally. It is my JOB to love all players equally (really) and it is my HOBBY to make sure “Windows multimedia” (not just Windows Media) works well. I’m pretty much always acting in good faith, seriously. Get used to it.

It isn’t? I think it’s safe to assume that your average user who is just watching random videos from around the Internet, BT, or whatever the hell else they want to get videos from is only going to encounter the need to support a handful of different video codecs. If you think otherwise, that’s fine. I disagree, though.

Again, I think this depends on the situation. As far as I’m concerned, if Joe User can run a media player that is likely to support the rest of the videos he will ever watch, then it seems dumb to me to instead go and download a dozen different codecs instead of using the player that will already support them natively. Yes, I am going with the assumption that the player will play all of the user’s media. If it won’t, then I agree with you that switching players just to support some videos is nothing short of retarded. In the likely scenario that the player does support the relatively common codecs needed, though, then switching the player used once will solve the problem.

If you read my previous post, you’ll see I never claimed otherwise. I just said it was kind of ridiculous to discredit something else simply because of your preferences on the matter.

I realize this…

Perhaps my reading level has dropped significantly since I started college, but I honestly don’t see what this has to do with anything or how you are making a connection between MPC, WMP on Vista, and being petty.

Right back at you, chief.

uh…is there any reliable but FREE anti virus program ?? I use firefox but always get owned by random virus :wasted:

also there way to uninstal internet explorer ? I am guesing IE is what “they” use to install random shit on my computer…

Miranda ftw.

AVG and avast! generally seem to be the best free antivirus programs around. From what I’ve read and been told, AVG >>>> avast

Rock! Was able to convince my dad to pay half for the small form factor PC I’m building. Trying to go for a quiet setup in a SFF chassis. Hope it’ll work

Case/Mobo – I’ve worked with Shuttles a lot in the past, but I’ve never owned one of my own.
CPU – Of course it isn’t the biggest and baddest, but since it’s just going to be an internet/occasional music and video editing machine, the power to OC it safely with the Shuttle’s mobo is a nice option.
RAM – This’ll do until I can afford the XMS3 madness in a future machine. hahah
Video card – I don’t play PC games, so this will do just to keep video RAM separate from the system RAM.
And I jacked a free unused 80GB SATA hard drive from work. WIN

Extras:
thermal compound - I suck at applying Arctic Silver. Brush on FTW?
RAM heat spreaders - I’ve never used these before, but I figure that this system will generate a lot of heat in such a small space, these might be worth it.
case sound dampeners – not sure about this yet. Might go nuts with the heating and stuff.

:bluu:Soooo… here’s my problem:
You see I was online for about 3 days. My laptop only cooled down when I was asleep. last night a friend of mine brought over some anime on CD so I tested them out. They all worked. Now fast foward to today and my D-drive no longer reads the CDs. At first I thought it was my Realplayer(I have the lastest one)so I ran the DMC4 trailer and it worked fine. So I deducted that it was my D-drive. So know I can’t play any CD’s. I tried going online after I put in the CD and the page was just white. Solution???

hey guys, whats a good program to convert .3g2 files to the more common movie files?

Anyone here decent with Microsoft Info Path. I am doing a basic form design and was curious if anyone could check out my work and give me some tips or pointers. I am new to using info path and wanted some suggestions.

Thanks,
PSX

Has Microsoft given up on updating XP for 64-bit chips? Last I heard, a lot of hardware/software companies just don’t care about XP64 anymore. From what I’ve been reading on Newegg’s feedback regarding XPSP2 for 64-bit CPUs, it seems like I might as well keep using 32-bit XP.

Can I post issues concerning ftp clients? Since it has to do with computers. Anyway, my problem is with being able to connect to a certain ftp site to upload files. All my settings are correct and I tried turning off firewall and etc. I can connect to other ftp sites without a problem, except for this one and I even had someone else connect and do the same. Said it was some random shit or something. I have used other ftp clients and I get the same thing. I think it had something to do with external ip address? Any clues?

btw, the ftp site is Preppy’s and other people have been able to connect with no problem using the exact same settings. I even tried unstalling and reinstalling, using the most up to date versions and etc… nothing seems to work.

XP 64 or “2003 XP 64”? Vista 64 should be monumentally better. Monumentally. If you’re still on XP 64, at least go to Windows Server 2003 64bit Professional. That’s probably what you meant, but there is a discrete Windows XP 64 Pro OS too.

^^ one of these guys. I dunno what is what anymore. All I know is 32-bit XP Pro. hahah
