What entails this new cooling system? New thermal paste/compound? Better CPU fans? Ditching it all for a liquid cooling setup? I’d actually look into pricing out what you’d be doing. Because it might actually be cost-effective to get a new CPU/mobo combo if it’s bothering you that much.
As for CPU strain, I’d take a look and see what programs/processes you could do without while your computer is on. Surely, you don’t need EVERYTHING running when you’re surfing SRK. Only launching what you need for certain times would be the first answer without actually looking at what you’ve got running.
so despite the help you guys gave me awhile back to get my ‘programs’ button back on my start button menu, not only is it gone, so is my find feature. i am certain that somehow these two features have been disabled by ‘administrator’ even though i am the administrator of the computer. additionally, my task manager window was ‘disabled by administrator’ for a little bit but i managed to get that working again by fucking with the registry. all of this points to the possibility of a virus right? but i ran an updated virus scan and nothing came up at all except for some registry changes. i fixed those.
still though, no search or programs. one thing i did was going into the user config and disabling the ability to keep ‘programs’ and search off the start menu. ONE time after doing this i suddenly had the search button back, but then it was suddenly gone again. so weird.
i assume that if i had a virus it is now gone. my problem is getting these two features back. using the computer is hell without them.
if i had my windows install CDs this would not be any big deal at all. but unfortunately i don’t. any advice?
I plan on getting a better heat sync and fan, nothing more. My financial situation is rather dire, and the method I’ve decided on to pay off my “debt” leaves me with about $50-90 a week for my own spending, not enough for me to buy a new processor/cooling system unless I don’t spend a dime for the next couple of weeks.
As for what I’m running? I can probably use one program at a time. I mainly use my computer for downloading and watching anime, downloading it will put too much strain and cause a freeze so I can’t do that any more. I can still watch it but if any other programs are running, small ones such as AIM or Firefox, it will freeze. I obviously can’t play games on it right now.
I think there must be something on my computer causing my processor to run so hot, so I’m going to attempt a reformat today after work.
There is more running on your computer than just the application you see in the Task Bar. If you open the Task Manager, how many processes do you have going? Those can add up so you should prevent any unnecessary ones from running. Assuming you are running XP, you can change what programs are allowed to start with Windows via the following:
Start > Run > type in “msconfig” > Click the tab on the far right (I can’t remember what it’s called and I’m not running Windows to look) > uncheck any programs that you don’t actually need.
I think there may actually be two tabs you can go through under msconfig (Start Up and Services?), unchecking any applications that you don’t need.
Thanks for the correction, wasn’t sure about that.
I already knew about the task manager but didn’t think that’s what you meant. I seem to have a normal amount of processes running, thanks for the help but I’m just going to try a reformat, and if that doesn’t work I’ll buy a copper heat sink.
Just stumbled upon AIM Lite last night because my old-ass version of AIM wouldn’t work on Vista for some reason (shit. it wouldn’t even download properly). A lot of stuff is cut out of it, but I’m wishing they still had smileys in it, and compatibility for AIM direct connect. But since it’s a work in progress, I’m sure they’ll have it coming out sooner than later.
Yeah. I had 5.5.3595 for my XP machine for the longest time so I could rock DeadAIM on it. Now that I switched to Vista, I can’t use it. This AIM Lite is a pretty good alternative.
I personally can’t stand Pidgin. I’m a minimalist, so it’s hard to handle the giant interface that Pidgin has. Maybe I haven’t delved too much and probably haven’t changed the layout of it, but yeah. I couldn’t mess with Pidgin.
Personally, I’m also a Pidgin fan. It’s especially nice that I can use it on both Windows and Linux. If you don’t like it, though, then I would recommend trying MirandaIM. It was my favorite Windows-only client.
I typically only use AIM, too, but when you’re looking for 3rd party clients you’re almost guaranteed to find ones that are multi-protocol. The key is just to find ones that don’t annoy you with the protocols you aren’t using.
Outlook/Office/Networking Gurus I need your help.
Currently we have around 60-70 workstations all using Windows Xp Pro SP2. Each user has a roaming profile that allows them to log into any workstation and have it be configured to there settings.
I currently have a few questions
I have about 60 users across a netork using Outlook 2003. I was curious is there a way to apply a change in a macro (i.e edit a macro we use) or add in a macro to all users without having to walk to each persons workstation or login with there roaming profile and do the change one by one? I.e my goal is to make a change and have it apply to all our users.
Is there a similar way to do this with Microsoft Word 2007. I want all users having the same margins, fonts, etc and I hate walking to each persons workstation , logging in as them and then making the changes.
If anyone got any solutions or ideas feel free to contact me. Your help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
PSX
If you’re managing them all with an Active Directory setup, you might be able to create an Organizational Unit/Group Policy that can apply the macro upon login. But I haven’t messed around enough with Windows Server to point you in any direction to get started.
Completely unrelated to my last questions, but I don’t think it deserves it’s own thread so I’ll ask here.
Can anyone recommend a codec for Windows Media Player Classic? When watching certain files it won’t play any sound. There’s a button that will let me look online for codecs but it doesn’t help at all.
Okay, I installed Just Cause on my PC and whilist beginning playing, my PC pooped out on me with a blank screen. Everytime I start up my PC, all the fans and whatnot runs, but it hangs at a black screen. In the end I got two beeps from the PC and finally found out that the video card (6800GT AGP) was the problem. See I bought the card used from ebay over 2 months ago and it ran perfectly smooth up until now. The original owner overclocked it for a few weeks.
So give me some input here. The black screen could either be caused by a low PSU on my end or the video card is dead. Or maybe my memory is bad. What do you folks think?
either update to newest version as they are always releasing them 2)use vlc 3) do a clean install or 4)download separate codecs for wmp but I’d suggest you speak to me buddy preppy. as he’s the master of wmp
