Computer Help Thread v4.0

nevermind i fixed the problem myself.

I’ll check my connections, but I’m not really sure how they got messed up when all I did was reinsert my video card and PCI slots. :frowning:

just another comment on steadystate and deepfreeze:

steadystate is great and easy to set-up but it takes very long to load/start-up. plus the cache file is huge compared to deepfreeze.

so, imo deepfreeze is better.

that happened to my pc before and it turns out that my motherboard was trashed, it’ll be a long-shot but we might have the same problem.

PROTIP: Stop the SteadyState service.
Start > Run… > services.msc
Scroll down to Windows SteadyState service. Right-click and choose Properties. Change Startup Type to “Disabled” and then Apply. THEN, Stop the service.

Try it.

Stop the service on the left side? What’s that do?

I would assume that stopping it under the Services menu (you can also accomplish this by going to: Start > Run > “msconfig” > Startup tab), will let you prevent it from loading with Windows when you reboot the machine. That way it won’t cause your startup to take forever.

Hello, Someone please help me.

Recently I downloaded monopoly here & now Edition. And I got greedy and wanted to download a crack. I downloaded the crack, installed it an everything and now I think I got a virus/trojan in my computer. I ran mcAfee anti virus and I think it removed 2 files.

Later on, the problem persisted where the following occured:

1a) I cannot unistall a program called “Video Access Codec” That is the ‘crack’ program that I installed. Everytime I tried to unistall it the following message occurs "The installer you are trying to use is corrupted or incomplete. This could be the result of a damaged disk, a failed download, or a virus. You may want to contact the author of this isntaller to obtain a new copy. It may be possible to skip this check using the /NRC command line switch (NOT RECOMMENDED).

Does anyone know how to get rid of this ?

  1. My home page keeps automatically setting itself to:
    http://ucleaner.com/main.php?wmid=6010&mid=MjI6Ojg5&lndid=2\

  2. I get 3 new desktop icons every time I restarted (I tried deleting them, but they keep coming back).

  3. EVerytime I visit web pages a windows security alert which has the following message on it “Windows has detected an Internet attack attempt… Somebody’s trying to infect your pc with spyware or harmful viruses. Run full system scan now to protect your pc from internet attacks, hijacking attemps and spyware! click here to download spyware remover for total protection”

I don’t believe and always click the X out button. But the message keeps apperaring and its annoying the heck out of me.

  1. I read the previous pages and downloaded ad-aware 2007 and SPYbot S&D; deleted a lof crap files and stuff but the problem still isn’t going away.

  2. I tried system restore to a couple of weeks before this happened but system restore said that they cannot do it because my computer has not changed since then.

I"m at the point where I want to reformat my whole thing. But before I do, I want to know if there is something else I can do?

All of my bookmarks in firefox erased themselves. This has happened once before and a month later I fixed it some how, but I can’t remember what I did. I really need my bookmarks, there were tons of them that I used on a daily basis and have no recollection of the URL. Can anyone tell me how to get them back?

Also I need to close some processes I’m not using, but I can’t tell which ones are going to fuck up my computer when I close them. Can anyone give me advice on what to look for?

Hi again.

Using a laptop I’m able to connect to the Internet via wireless network in a certain place, but I can’t connect to any wireless networks in my house. My desktop can connect just fine. On the laptop (when I’m at home) when I go to network connections in the control panel, it gives a message saying that Windows is not configured to connect to any wireless networks (in other words, where the list of networks normally comes up, there’s nothing but that message). But in that case how did it connect to a network before?

I was told to type 'cmd /k ipconfig /all | find “Auto” ’ in the run space, and on the desktop it says it’s automatically configured but on the laptop nothing comes up. Does that mean I have to configure something before I can connect to wireless networks in my home? If so, what do I do?

Thanks in advance.

You could check things at processlibrary.com.

Firefox does that once in awhile. Happened to me too once. Just back em up from time to time.

Or switch to Opera.

Just a shot in the dark but try using a program called unlocker. It may allow you to uninstall. Like I say though a shot in the dark.

looking for a good laptop,around $600ish

Bingo. Unless you’re using SteadyState on a public access computer (library, LAN center, etc.), there’s not really a need for having the service on, IMO. They say it’s necessary to have it on to enable Windows Updates, detecting what AV program is installed, disable autologon for Windows Updates. Meh. I don’t care about that stuff. I have it just for the “clean stuff at reboot” option and I update my machines at my sites whenever I see fit.

There is also a possibility with this that the files your security applications removed broke the uninstaller. I’ve seen this happen in instances where people have just deleted files from their Program Files folder, realized the application was then broken, and tried to uninstall it. Unfortunately, I’m not exactly sure how to fix that since it’s never a problem I’ve personally had. If anyone knows a way to uninstall an application that has been broken, that might be what you need.

So I decide to do a fireware and a driver upgrade to my habu. Change my polling rate to 1hz and well my dpi is always on 2000 and them after a while my computer melts down and restarts by itself and it has already done it twice. Then I reduce the polling rate to 500hz and it seems to have stopped. Any Idea why 1kHz wont work =(

I got the problem fixed on another message board. apparently the trojan name is a rogue-spyware, where it forces users to buy a product to get rid of the trojan (they put in themselves).

The solution is to download a program called smitfraudfix and run it in safemode. Its a free program, unlike spyhunter and other programs that claims to fix the same issue. ty for the help anyways.

Just looking for some simple (hopefully anyways) help.

Anyways, I got just an upgrade from a REALLY trashy computer to a semi-trashy computer. Anyways, I installed XP onto it and everything seemed fine. However, about 2 weeks ago, my digital mouse randomly lost power and I had to restart it to get the computer to reconize it again. And then about a week later, I had left my comp on overnight and it (I assume) had just over heated and restarted. But, when I turned on the monitor the next morning, it was on the XP loading screen, just frozen.

After the last 2 weeks or so, the computer seems to just randomly crash (and sometimes, I have to reboot about 5 times before it won’t crash again). It tends to especially crash if I have to transfer files from my PSP to the comp or vice versa. I’m thinking it’s not a power or overheating issue cause it does’nt reset, it just freeze’s up and stays that way until I either turn it off, or reboot it. But there are also times when I have had the comp run fine for more than 10 hours and I did a lot of transfering.

But also, I currently do not have an internet connection and I have not gotten the updates for XP yet (it’s running raw off of the disc I used to install it) so I was thinking if maybe that can be it. Also, I’m using SP2 version of XP.

Any ideas of what the problem may be?

I’ve been having problems with my processor overheating lately. I plan on installing a new cooling system because I can’t afford a new processor, will this do the trick?

Also is there any way I can reduce the strain on my processor?
