Computer Help Thread v4.0

Anybody have a Razor mouse and have Windows constantly corrupt the drivers? This is the second time it’s only installed a “HID-compliant mouse” that dosen’t work. This time, it clicks, but doesn’t move the arrow around. :lame: If the mouse is actually broken and it’s not Windows, then that’s even lamer cause this mouse is supposedly top tier for gaming (it actually is) and cost 65$

I use a wired razer/habu gaming mouse and it is a top tier mouse for fps. I haven’t opened the driver disk yet but it works fine with all the precision levels. If your windows is corrupting drivers, have you considered the possibility that your pc might be infected with a virus of some sort?

so I have this new HP laptop which runs on Vista and it constantly fucks up. I downloaded some health advisory updates or something and when I restarted I get this blue screen which says that a recent hardware or software installation is preventing Windows from opening. If I turn it on and off like five times it will start; otherwise it can start in safe mode. I can’t do a system restore because for some unknown to me reason my system restore wasn’t turned on at the time of the installed updates/crash. And there was no other recently installed hardware. Sometimes it randomly gives me the option to system restore at startup, but it can never complete the restore (I don’t even know to what point it would restore) because every time it restarts it reverts to the blue screen telling me Windows can’t start.

I called HP and talked to their wonderful Indian technician named JOSEPH (LOL at him spelling something out to me and saying “I as in India”) and he told me to run diagnostics at startup (by pressing F10) and do a hard drive check. I did the quick check which my hard drive passed, and then theres a complete check which takes 99 minutes which they told me to do and then call them back. Around 80% into the check, my laptop just shut off. I turned it on again and ran the check again, and about 20 minutes in it shut off again. I called HP back and they told me it was a hard drive issue and they would send me a new one free, and I told them this laptop has been a POS since day 1 and I want to send it in for them to make sure that’s all it really needs. So I’m sending it in tomorrowish for them to look at and ship out a new hard drive if necessary.

so, basically I guess I’m asking why my laptop would shut off during this test? Does that mean it’s an automatic hard drive failure? I was able to delete the programs installed during the update while in safe mode, but it didn’t do anything. And why does my computer show me the blue screen sometimes, the option to system restore other times, and at all times randomly start up if I turn it on and off several times? Please help me make sense of this! Sorry if it’s a long read… I like typing.

I’m pissed cause I just restored this damn thing to factory for another fuck up like two weeks ago and it’s been working fine and I JUST finally decided to list my backup laptop on Ebay YESTERDAY. I should be selling this one, but I’m not gonna scam anyone and sell a piece of shit and if HP looks at it they should be able to permanently fix it. I think.

I’ve got a problem with a backup drive. I have a Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 with 300gb of storage, trying to use as an external drive through a SATA hard drive enclosure. The computer recognizes a “USB Mass Storage device”, but the drive will not show up in My Computer. Anybody know where to start on this problem?

If it’s being that much of a pain, send it back cause it shouldn’t be that much work for you to fix such a new product from them (unless you did something to it). The problem might be faulty hardware. Since you’re sending it, make sure you don’t have to pay shipping fees either, that would just suck even more.

Start on your device manager to see if everything is normal there. Reconnect/reinstall devices to see if it makes any difference.

I’ve done so repeatedly. I also installed Seagate’s Disk Wizard, which doesn’t detect it, since it’s reading registered drives.

After going through the Add Hardware wizard, when selecting the USB Mass Storage Device, it says “the device cannot start (code 10).”

Seems like a hardware problem:

Nothing funny about that, really. He was just trying to spell it out phonetically.

i just got this DELL comp like a year ago. everytime i turn it on, it all black and word n shit pop up. i cant go to the internet screen no more. the warranty say 2 year i think, is there any way for me to check the warranty.

can i call dell up n tell them to send me a new one or do i have to bring it to them? am i even allow to call them n tell them to fix it? dis sux. i dont have the receipt no more, can they still fix or give me a new one?

I just installed Litestep and it asked me to reboot. Now when I turn it on my mouse or keyboard don’t respond so there’s nothing I can do. Any help
posting from laptop.

Edit: Fixed, Thanks Mixah

If you just call Dell’s tech support and give them the numbers they ask for, they’ll be able to tell you if the machine is still under warranty or not.

HELP!!!

i’m computer retarded…i admit it upfront.
i just moved, and i finally got my comp set up at the new place. internets are working, and photoshops are working. but every time i try to open itunes the program won’t respond. it loads up, but then i can’t do anything, and the program says "not responding"
i restarted my computer twice, but still nothing. i don’t want to lose all the music i have on there!

i dont know where to look for the number. a buddy of mine say it should be in the back somewhere, i havent look yet.

so if its under warranty then i can get a new comp replace? i dont need a receipt for this, or do i?

@Wanderer: it should be on the back, or the bottom
it’s the express service tag number.:r::hcf::l::snka:

@Wombat: back up the itunes music and reinstall the program.:lp::lp::r::lk::hp:

is there a way to do that without accessing itunes? and how?

Yeah those music files are stored on the harddrive, probably in the iTunes -> Music directory.

yeah, that should be the directory.

i never used itunes, and i refuse to do so to manage my music, so i really dont know. the files SHOULD be saved on the hdd though, so just back those up and reinstall the program.

Well, it won’t just be as simple as calling them and having them hook you up with a new machine. Instead, tech support will walk you through all kinds of steps in their attempt to identify what exactly is wrong with the machine so that they can mail you a replacement for whatever is causing problems.

I’m glad I’m not the only person with a distaste for iTunes.

I used to hate iTunes, but then I figured out how to make it not suck so bad (ie, give it as little control as possible) and I don’t really mind it anymore. Still prefer Winamp though.
