Computer Help Thread v4.0

if you don’t really need the to play heavy games or use heavy apps, go for a laptop. much more convenient.

That’s what I seemed unsure about, the desktop sitting in my dorm while I’m over on another campus.

Yeah, I wouldn’t like having to set everything up all the time. Mobility of the laptop seems so much more easier.

Na, nothing like Warcraft or Counter-Strike. At most it would be 3rd Strike.

Thanks a lot guys, I needed some opinions before finalizing this.

is it safe to leave dvds in my car in hot weather?

Need a godly motherboard and processor, rebuilding computer.

Make sure you get a good one if you get a laptop thou. I’ve heard people complain about how their 3s/MAME runs at half the speed with optimal settings on 1.5ghz/512mb desktop

lol

dont expose them to sunlight

and don’t quench :looney:

make sure the temperature inside car doesn’t exceed recommended usage temperature range… I mean…dvds do get really hot inside your reader/burner

Alright, cool, thanks.

nope, they’ll warp at certain higher temps.

Laptop. I had both for a few years and it was a pain to keep track of school work between the two. Laptops can be pretty crazy these days for a reasonable price. The laptop I bought from Sager a few months ago is more powerful than my PC was before I sold it.

512MB video cards and Dual Core Processors in a laptop ftw.

Yeah, I see one pre-configured I might buy and it’s pretty beastly. Though I was told not to upgrade a lot of things like RPM on the HD cause it’ll produce more heat.

What’s a good sound card? It’s not for gaming or anything, just one for a media center?

what the hell? Come on mixah, you know there are good alternatives for this individual so that he could save money as well. I know you won’t take this the wrong way but, I’m sure he could get great results with other boards as well. that one is overkill. & NMU go with a creative x fi, you 'll be alright with that

he asked for godlike, so i gave him godlike… you want godlike with a budget?

Asus P5B Deluxe - $180

Intel C2D E6600 - $220

EVGA 8800GTS 320 version - $290

So, now you have a good mobo, good processor, you can overclock it to a nice speed, and a DX10 video card for less.

or… i can just configure you a nice system for a budget, just let me know how much you want to spend and what you want to do with it… i can usually configure a decent system for about $600, that can play most mid-range games (counter strike, wow, etc), and high end games on lower settings (fear, oblivion), and might crawl though with really high games like lost planet.

“you want godlike with a budget?” > made my day.

Recently, I have been experiencing a lot of pop-up ads…how can I prevent the pop ups?

You’ll need to remove the malware that’s causing them.

Spybot
AVG Free
Windows Defender
Ad-Aware

Pop ups even when all programs are closed? If that’s the case, it’s spyware so you’ll need something like Adaware.

If it’s while you’re browsing websites, I just use the pop-up blocker from google.

Thanks to all who have helped me before.

I’ve been skimming through some guides on port forwarding, but I want to be sure of something. I don’t have to physically tamper with the router, correct? It can all be done directly from the computer I use?

You will need to log into your router’s configuration page.
There are sites which walk you through it. e.g. http://portforward.com/routers.htm
You can also find information on your router’s manufacturer website.
