Competitive or not

ouch!!! nice shot!

I don’t play online but I’d love to play you guys some time. There’s no point in trying to prove that I’m “not a scrub” so nice insult.

BRAWL IS SERIOUS BUSINESS I GUESS, RIGHT? Honestly, I’d love to see what makes good players so special in brawl. What separates the average player from the elite?

Prediction? That’s not a skill I’m sorry, you can learn to predict your regular opponents but everyone is different. I’m sure you can make long ass branching charts about brawl like “OK AFTER THE TILT I CAN EITHER GRAB OR IF HE ROLLS DOWN B AND IF HE JUMPS I CAN HIT HIM WITH A NAIR AND IF HE AIR DODGES I CAN…”

I’ve done that stuff myself. the game is simple, so I don’t see how scrubs can even exist in this game, since you’re all stressing that it’s so accessible and non-execution based. I’ve played fighters for as long as I can remember so I understand the idea of mind-games and shit.

probably my last post in this thread so whatever.

Holy shit, I wasn’t even paying attention before but that’s honestly the most stupid thing I’ve ever read in my life.

Go play some well known great players offline and you might start to see that there are people who are just plain better than you at this ‘shallow’ game. Once you lose a lot and aren’t even able to pull off a win, maybe then you’ll start to see that the game isn’t as simple as you think.

So being able to read an opponent is not a skill. Wow there went fighting games, what a shitty type of game to play.

This thread is useless. If you think the game isn’t competitive then keep it to yourself. We been through this for far too long, and in the end of it all, all thats gathered is that the competitiveness of brawl is a matter of opinion. This is SRK, we don’t care about your opinion, we only care about proving that our opinion is the only one that matters. Wakka wakka bitches.

Here let me do my DropOff impression:

lol your game sucks, you’re all scrubs, there’s no depth to it and anyone can play it. This is the truth and you can’t respond to my posts and if you do then I will laugh at you.

May I ask what bridge you live under, Mr.Troll?

IMO I think it’s obvious that Smash Bros Brawl is competitive not only judging by its competitive nature but also by the support of its community.

I think the debate should be whether or not Smash Bros is a fighting game?

To be honest, I don’t think I like that topic a whole lot more.

Of course it’s a fighting game, it just doesn’t follow the standard so closely.

It’s a racing game obviously. There would have to be fighting involved in order for it to be a fighting game. Clearly that is something that brawl does not have.

It’s clear that this man is a true NINJA WARRIOR. imo It’s competitive to me because it involves all the elements of a fighting game. Like reading your opponent’s moves/mind, adjusting to whatever playstyle you face, knowing matchups, okizemi, and properly applying the tools your character has at their disposal. It’s also the only fighting game I have played that involves knowing your STAGE advantages/disadvantages according to your matchup. Not to mention items which add in a whole new factor. Its refreshing to play a game thats different from the standard 2d fighter but still has all the elements. Although I never cared about balance in a fighting game so I may be overlooking that part where MK/Snake “dominates” but I doubt that’ll last long.

http://allisbrawl.com/blogpost.aspx?id=1485 <— good read on competitive brawl

btw MK / Snake dominating? Allisbrawl ladder is dominated by a Peach and a DK. A DK with like 30 wins 1 loss.

You just have to know how to fight those two fuckers.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I don’t think anybody really cares/participates in those ladders. SoCal’s developed a good brawl scene, and Snakes and MKs generally have performed really well.

But yeah, once you practice against those two, it’s not that big of a problem.

All is brawl is a childish community. There aren’t even arguments at all, and everyone can make online tournaments to manipulate tierlists. These tournaments aren’t even offline - look at the “Brawl online sucks and you know it” thread - so their ladder says nothing.

What makes something “competitive” is not just the best player winning or whether something is balanced. It is a feeling. What I mean by feeling is that it is the sensation that one gets when trying to win in a contest against others when said contest is very close. I am going to use Brawl and Guilty Gear as examples.

Guilty Gear Accent Core:
We have one player playing as Slayer, and the other playing as Baiken. Both players are down to 5% health, and there is 20 seconds left. One mistake from either side and the match is over.

Super Smash Brothers Brawl:
We have two players who are both using Snake. Both players are around 170% on their last stock. There is less than a minute left.

To make matters worse, both of these matches are happening at their respective tournaments, and both of these matches are taking place in the loser’s brackets.

There is a similarity between these examples, and it has nothing to do with the tournaments or the game mechanics. It is the feeling that one gets when placed in situations such as those. You get sweaty, stressed, and sometimes doubtful. Your heart is pounding, and the gears inside your head are spinning at break-neck speeds. You get the sensation that time as slowed, and you are no longer aware of what’s happening around you. You are only focused on what is before you. Part of you just wants it to be over, but the other part is enjoying it.

To me, this is what competitive is. It is that feeling. When I play Brawl, and I’m in a tournament (whether it be offline or online), I get that feeling. That is why I believe Brawl is competitive.

I have had the pleasure of playing that DK. I was caught by surprise by how well played the DK was, and then I got my ass whooped. It was the equivalent of an ass-kicking contest with my opponent having six legs and I having no legs.

I have also stopped participating in the AiB ladder, but not because of my dismal 4 wins and 8 losses record. I was just becoming too focused on my wins and losses ratio that every mistake or miscalculation was frustrating me too much to even enjoy the matches. Besides, I prefer the tournament setting over ranked matches. I am such a tournament whore !

There’s no need to write doctoral essays about whether something is competitive or not. If a game has 2+ players and defines winners and losers, it is a competitive game.

nah I wouldn’t make it that simple. Competitive games actually have to make room for depth to be competitive. I don’t think no one’s gonna play Shaq Fu or Rise of the Robots competitively, and as fun as it is no one here is gonna give Metal Warriors any kind of a serious chance.

Shaq Fu @ Evo 2009, make it happen.

Though I agree, defining a game as competitive is more than just saying 2+ players and then there’s a winner or a loser.

The main thing about the game is that it’s just boring to watch. Nothing really draws you in and the game lacks hitstun which is just something that pretty much everyone feels a fighting game should have. Also tripping is just an abomination.

Brawl as a game has some serious flaws and since it’s not that exciting it gets alot of hate. It’s very fun, but the game is going no where. It’s just too popular to go away.

I do not think it’s a good competitive game at all and I personally think it’s bad competitive game. But I think Melee was a bad competitive game as well, but for different reasons. *shrugs

Thank you for not being delusional.
