Isn’t this video about how tourney “players” (read: spectators) think they know way more than anyone else?
N - Yeah.

Ugh. Its funny how only like 2 people on srk know anything about Esports. Look guys… Ive been in the scene since the beggining and even helped to start it. Right now i work for the esports dev team for VGI, and before competed in many games on a professional level. If you guys want some real info on this shit then ask me. plz. SRK isnt the place for info to be wrong. We pride ourselves in our eliteness. Leave that to the rest of the internet.
Comments are on approval mode :looney: What an ass…
Well golf isn’t exhaustive and it’s a sport.
Just saying…
I guess thats true, but even outside the tourney’s, competitive gaming exists.
Ok…I think this was… maybe one of the points he was trying to make and brings up another question. Are players defined specifically on records placed in tournaments? If I recall a story from Street Fighter EX, Allen Snider was hailed as one of the greatest martial artists ever, and they never heard of Ken Masters, and when he entered, everyone clowned him, but then Allen gets owned. Ken had no records placed until that very day. Sure records would help with proof of you being good, but it’s not a determining factor of your skill. I recall a time on Kaillera where I played my Gambit against two people (4 player tag MVC) who where in the top 5 of some tourney (it’s been 4 years so I can’t recall) and on a first try, me and my friend beat them, and we’ve never entered…ok well we entered an online Kai tourney and lost but thats aside the point. the moral is having prizes from tournaments are just that, prizes, they aren’t a pure defining factor of your on skill.
It also has to do with-
#1- How recent the tournament was…how big the tournament was.
In other words 4 years ago placing high doesnt mean shit…means people think you are washed up more than likely…
You gotta keep your skill going…
#2- Also if you place top five in your backyard vs. top five at EVO or a Major is something totally different…
Locals dont mean shit…everyone judges off Majors…
I spent 5 years of my life playing counter strike competitively. Leagues and local lans and such and I have to agree with that guy.
Those 5 years were wasted taking counter strike so seriously. What do I have to show for it? I can say I was in “cal-invite” for cs source? Yea, That doesn’t even matter to other counter strike players anymore let alone having it be a real fucking accomplishment.
If I could do it all over again I would have never left the pubs. I only really play for fun now. Win or lose whatever. I pub with friends and sometimes ring for their teams when they need a 5th for counter strike. But im never going to take a video game that seriously again.
The whole “e-sports” shit is a joke. Great I am sure for the 5 percent of players who actually make real money off it. But for the other 95 percent of the people it is a waste of time.
Its the truth because the whole attitude for anything at the highest level competitively speaking is:
“What have you done for me lately?”
Who cares who won the Super Bowl 4 years ago?
Remember Kurt Warner? Yeah…thats right** he’s washed up.**
Remember the craziness about Daigo? Don’t see people jocking him as much as they did in 2004 do you!
Remember K.O.? Yeah you don’t see people talking about HIM anymore either!
Who is the latest greatest player is what everyone is gonna be talking about…thats how it is…
Ok I dont think you interpreted what I said. I LOST the thing on the first round, so yeah I was washed up. Also the kai tourney wasn’t 4 years ago, it was 2, and those two we beat were not a part of the tourney. It was a major one but I can’t recall it.
Okay I gotcha…I’m just saying in general ***the more time passes the more people are gonna discredit your accomplishments…
Look at Alex Valle even…his numerous records and tournament victories and in the him vs. Justin Wong thread who are people siding with???
Justin Wong…why? Well he’s CURRENTLY WINNING!!
Same with Choi vs. Justin!! Why?? Well Choi just won a tournament more RECENT THAN JUSTINS… So they are siding with John Choi!
See how it goes???
It’s like a fad…
As long as you see it for that you won’t allow yourself to get caught up in it…
I know I sure dont…I just play…though I LOVE shutting up my naysayers…
:lovin:
Gotcha
If Playing to Win or playing hardcore is not fun for you of course you should find another hobby.
I usually don’t get why so many people complain about wasting time. If you played CD hardcore for many years having a lot of fun it was not a waste, unless this get in the way of your priorities in life. If you spent 5 years with a girl and you just broke up its not a waste, not if you had a really good time while with her.
My point is that we all should try to make the world better and put our families, studies and career above personal hobbies to get a safer future. Asides from that, you use you free time in any activities that makes you feel good. If you feel good playing CS on your free time, even if its for hours everyday, great. have fun with that. If you feel good practicing piano, more power to you. If you just like to relax and watch TV, that’s cool also. Only if you’re doing something that its not adding value to your life in any way (you’re not learning anything nor having any fun), then I’d advise you to stop doing it. Maybe this was your case, but I’m pretty sure most people here don’t get stressed by practicing fighting games or thinking about how far they can go at Evo. They go there to have some fun. The only people who get stressed are the onws who know they’re playing for thousands and thousands of dollars, and for them it is really kind of a side job, so we can’t blame them too.
Not at all, in fact the people in the past are often more respected, because they did well when tournaments were harder to get to, had less prizes, less equipment, and more drama because people didn’t know each other.
The match is now, so of course it’s going to be based on their skills now, were you expecting something else?
But if you want to talk about accomplishments… ask yourself who has a larger place in SF History? Typically it’s people like Valle and Choi, despite Justins winstreak, despite his numerous placings in every game, like I said, it’s the newer player that gets discredited, because they are seen as having the benefits of the previous generation. You got it backwards.
Again, if your playing a match today, then you have to evaluate skills as of today. Does that mean that things that happened years ago don’t count? of course they count, but what do you want, a betting line for choi/justin based on what happened 5 years ago?
I played counterstrike for 3 years and have a new car and enough money in the bank to be comfortable to show for it, Also my current career i have to thank because of my experience. As it was a job requirement to have experience in the scene. Anyone who played for more than a couple of seasons of any league and didnt progress shouldve just quit. Its your fault for wasting your time.
FMJaguar- I am well aware that people are going based off more than just what I said…
But I am just making a overgeneralization…
Trust me I am well aware of the history…***
But I am oversimplifying it for the average eye to see…
Its also like Old Blood vs. New Blood so believe me I get it…but the facet I’m talking about in general DOES exist…
Thats all I’m saying…:china:
Like Michael Jordan v Kobe Bryant
Jordan is forever revered but kobe’s run ended in sexual harrassment charges.
ok…bad example.
FMJag and goodm0urning, just… don’t talk to Emil unless you want to be regaled with tales of how the Japanese are much more super special awesome than we are.
Stop pretending like that is normal.
The vast majority who play and still play that game have zero to show for it. You can’t put “Cal-p for 2 seasons, great awper and can call strats” on your typical resume for a normal everyday job.
Congrats, you managed to join up with a paying organization. You made it to that 5 percent.
Anyone who played for more than a couple of seasons of any league and didnt progress shouldve just quit.
I did progress up the cal league steps. And? I managed to cal invite for css and?
At that level it just stops being fun and starts being your job except most people don’t get paid for it. Having to deal with the drama of all the immature fags?
Pfft. yea, Congrats to you for making a career out of it. But that is hardly the norm.
>_> if its such a waste of time why are people doing it? lol
many people get their thrills by being competitive and winning, its equivalent to playing for fun. for them.
I’ve been playing smash for 2 years almost, I’m the norm I hardly break even at these things but whats fun is the atmosphere of competition that you really can’t get when your in your basement dicking around with your friends.
It isn’t for everyone why hate on community for it? >_> guys video was lame, didn’t even use facts just a biased opinion.
edit: also the fag deleted my comment. >_>
Your right that isnt the norm. But anyone who starts with this should realize that. Same with trying to go pro in any sport.
“I did progress up the cal league steps. And? I managed to cal invite for css and?
At that level it just stops being fun and starts being your job except most people don’t get paid for it. Having to deal with the drama of all the immature fags?”
This is 100% correct. Counter-Strike as a job is horrible. You wouldnt believe the amount of bs that comes with a fkn video game. And it just got worse as more money was involved.
Its true you can’t put great Awper or good rifle on a normal resume. But if your trying to make this your proffession then you need to realize all that before hand and evaluate your decision. Same can be said for anyone trying to go pro in ANYTHING. If you dont know anything about the road ahead of you then how are you going to get where you want. You just sound bitter that “it didnt work out”.

Competitive gaming is just as stupid as competitive sports (cause “sports” are just competitive gaming anyway) The only sad part about that is gaming is frowned upon while being 30 and dedicating your life to baseball gets you a huge pay check.
