The only part that’s hard to grasp is the amount of charts and graphs you need to keep track of what’s banned and what isn’t.
Moves, items, Pokemon, strategies… You’d need an excel spreadsheet and sophisticated tracking software to stay current.
The only move that’s banned is baton pass.
No item is banned unless they are to specific pokemon, like lucarionite.
The only strat that’s banned is the never ending battle strat and that’s because it literally does nothing but time you out. It’s only specific to like…3 pokemon. Unless you are trolling there is no need to know this
The team builder on showdown shoes you every pokemon and where they are tiered. It’s not hard to follow

(Baton Pass is pretty stupid though, unfortunately, especially when they never “fixed” Magic Bounce to not bounce Roar and Whirlwind. I’m not sure why you’d laugh about it given how much you hate Volt Switch and U-Turn.)
The problem with the Fairy infestation in OU is less that some of the most obvious Fairy killers are already banned to Ubers and more that Fairy type in and of itself is overpowered. Given how bad Gamefreak is at balancing the Type Chart, this is both unsurprising and unlikely to change any time soon, unfortunately. It’s not like any of the already banned Fairy killers are ever being retested this gen; for Anubis’s sake, Lucario(-Mega) just got Meteor Mash with Ultra’s release.
We have had this discussion before, like most of the (bickering) discussions in here, but I still don’t understand why Fairy is only weak to two types, both of which are nullified by the other best defensive type in the game and both of which are still relatively crappy offense types even with their new niche. I similarly still don’t understand why Fairy needed to resist Bug even if it was probably for U-Turn’s sins.
Because Poison and Steel typing were terrible offensive types for a long time. Being Poison-Type was only ever a downside outside of cleaning up T-Spikes, which varied in relevance and Steels never wanted to use their typing for actual offense outside of Scizor cause Bullet Punch + Technician.
Also easy to forget how rampant Dragon-Types were prior to the Fairy Revolution. There was very little downside to bringing in a Dragon, dropping a Draco, and getting the hell out of there especially if you had Dugtrio or Magnezone in the back waiting to destroy any Steel type dumb enough to come in to take the Draco.
Fairy Typing was actually one of the best ideas Gamefreak has had in a while, they just way overshot the checks to Fairies.
The other problem is that the only other type that resists Fairy is Fire, and we all know what an oxymoron a defensive Fire type is when silent stones and Earthquakes run rampant.
At least give the Ice type something to do other than test the patience of the playerbase.
(Yeah, Ice being resistant to Fairy (and Ghost) would be nice, though it has the same Stealth Rock problem unfortunately and I don’t expect anything to be done any time soon.)
@Saitsu - No no no. I understand both why Poison and Steel were chosen as weaknesses and wholeheartedly remember how Dragons ruled everything. Their ridiculous dominance in Gen 4 is why I quit for years and missed all of Gen 5. So I completely agree that an additional check to Dragons was needed; I’m even fine with Fairy being outright immune to Dragon unlike some people.
My anti-Fairy complaint was wondering why Fairy only has two weaknesses when it has an immunity unlike Water (an already overpowered type) and yet also generally lacks the frailty that Electric types have, which also don’t have an immunity as well having their sole weakness be rather common. That and saying that Fairy didn’t need to be the seventh (!) type that resisted Bug type given both the aforementioned immunity and becoming one of the few types also resistant to Dark a.k.a. Knock Off after Steel lost it.
Oh, well I would’ve given it the weakness of Bug as well but that’s neither here nor there.
It is legitimate possible it gets a new weakness or takes away the Bug resist down the line, like how Steels lost the Dark resist.
Mawile should have always stayed legal. It went from “lol this thing’s a joke lol just guess the sucker punch lol low speed” to “muh 50-50s what if it has focus punch pls ban”, which happened around the same time Smogon started to get lazy with their arguments for banning things, and most of them ended with the 50-50 boogeyman. Some things like Kangaskhan and Genesect had absolutely no room, while Lucario was extremely arguable, but Mawile was fair.
No better feeling in this game than throwing a raw subless Focus Punch to KO something, by the way.
Mawile in XY was hysterical post aegislash. It dented teams so hard you probably could have swept with caterpie afterwards
Fairy is only slightly op. The typings are actually fairly well balanced at the moment. Ice typing itself is really the only one that could use buffs (just let it resist fairy and water). Maybe bug typing but that one is definitely more iffy since it does pair really well with some types cough steel cough. On the offensive end it’s more that u-turn is such a common move i dont want to see that buffed really. Thank god for fairy tho cause double dragmag was dumb as hell. Fairy being immune to dragon is actually better for dragons than them resisting, which is kinda weird to say.
