Hey guys, weeks old new admission into the Empire. Making this my introduction at the same time.
I don’t have a problem with most clutch leads (speedy ones) that normally put holes in my team. I do however have a problem with Viewtiful Joe + lockdown assists. Normally, say Viper or even Wolf I can punish them with elastic normals pushing them to NEED to charge in where they usually meet a well welcomed handshake if you know what I mean.
Joe moves too much for me. I feel like I’m in a sidescrolling game where I have to do all types of maneuvers just to get in and around. I try rolling hook cancels into ( I want to say orbital grudge since the name sounds appropriate… The air teleport punch) but that doesn’t knock than home down hard enough for a OTG or I cannot dash quick enough to pick them up… Although I never did try the standing M headbut into launcher.
Point aside, with the addition of an assist I can’t find a reasonable way to close in. I can probably give a good ol’ M handshake but it seems like he’s always in between ground and actual air and I can’t heavy elastic slam for obvious reasons.
I really hate drones, so I don’t use them.
My team is modok / Skrull (point switches depending on previous match outcome if I lost) & Shuma. Shuma can remove all obstacles from my screen, but why I made this post is cause it doesn’t mean jack if Skrull cannot properly preform dolo for the Empire.
You mentioned rolling hook, so what about trying to use Forward H or downforward H to kind of at least to present some threat from far to mid range especially since his directional H’s arm doesn’t have a hurt box (it goes through projectiles)
[S]I hope I’m having a blonde moment, but I’m having trouble understanding what you mean. I did mention the normal vs leads, but I was talking about for Joe who’s constantly evading all types of rushes that I could think of. I mentioned the Rolling Hook as it’s the only thing I know of rush down tech other than using the repetitive L/M orbital Grudge + Fatal vs his Bullet Hell.[/S]
re-read and now understands
I will admit I did not know it went through projectiles, finally I see the invisible girl chemistry lol. So question, I now know that it goes through projectiles but does it destroy the projectile or is that only on contact? What is chain-able with either that will allow me a better opportunity to keep close with Joe?
Only two I know of are two I’ve seen from guides here,
Diagonal vs air, air tech, heavy elastic - same applies for the grounded just medium is used w/ assist to reset.
I know this isn’t a combo thread so if I’m going off topic just respond to the tradeoff question.
Update - I pretty much am well much more evenly matched vs projectile spammers now. I’ve adapted some different strategy vs them and now they fall for a lot of the diagonal H and back tech H elastic. Thanks @RedVega
I am having trouble with Strange & Trish’s lingering projectiles. I end up neutral teching and charging S by reaction or trying to lunge in for a grab but doesn’t really connect ever.
So now i’m playing against this buddy of mine and he plays Vergil/Dante/Strider. In this match up my options are limited by a lot. Since Vergil dominates the ground game. I usually get around him by super jumping but since there’s Vajra around. I’m like I got nothing. Vajra ruins a lot of my options. Punishes air dashes, if I*’*m hit while rushing down it’s 1 less character for me. My assist do little here. Anyone can help?
My information is definitely not concrete (unfortunately lol) but the way I try to handle vajra assist is pretty much getting two bars and punish the assist when he reappears with inferno xx Xfactor xx inferno. Another thing…M orbital grudge beats it when Strider reappears and if you get lucky you might be able to hit vergil if he tries to get in. Also I noticed that opponents that utilize vajra from full screen can be a bit predictable sometimes and this can lead to a a happy birthday if you rolling hook (preferable from 3/4s of the screen) consistently when they’re in the corner.
i haven’t played much vergil-striders, but i have played a lot of vergils and a lot of strider teams separately. vergil is just overall a hard matchup for any character not named zero if he has meter. But if he’s not packing, then i find OG beats a lot of things he tries to do (helm breaker, rapid slash, cr.L).
I agree. Dealing with strider assist i usually try to catch him w/rolling hook or orbital grudge+fatal buster. Even if i dont catch the point character i can always meteor smash over them and proceed killing strider. Just make sure you input the commands for skrull torch so you can inferno because you will still be facing your opponent character.
Skrull’sLEAST THREATENING matchups; (Please share your thoughts and add to it as this is only my opinion )
Chris- Rolling hook reaches over land mines to confirm, punish magnum spamming with meteor smash or command grab. Command grab grenade launcher supers. Chris’s supers have no invincinbility frames so skrull torch can get you out of anything he throws except lvl 3 but if he misses the 1st shot you can punish w/meteor smash or command grab.
Tron- Punish w/orbital Grudge as Tron tries to come in with air H or Drill, or H command grab.
Morrigan- I feel skrull was almost designed to kill Morrigan. Try to be unpredictable with meteor smash while fishing for command grabs. Youll eventually catch her one way or another. Elastic punch or orbital grudge to punish assists (fatal buster and meteor smash to inferno if your in the right situation to kill the assist. If shes using doom missiles, use elastic punch to possibly prevent/punish doom missiles,if missiles come out, try to set yourself in position to command grab her while missiles are airborne. If timed right missiles should land before command grab animation is up, leaving her open to a full combo (this part is CRITICAL) if you grab morrigan while doom is still launching the missiles, they will still be coming down after your command grab animation is up, preventing you from performing a game changing combo. Seasoned morrigan players know this and will use xfactor kill skrull, be mindful.
Phoenix Wright- I love how PW players feel safe behind maya collecting evidence (until they get command grabbed! lol: #NO HURTBOX) or just simply meteor smash behind him and punish. Even if he manages to get into his super PW mode, most PW players tend to jump and spam his blue pointy finger. I usually punish with H command grab and if I dont have enough space I Meteor smash to the other side. I dont know if orbital beats blue pointy finger but I wouldnt want to learn the hard way either
Haggar- I know this one will be pretty controversial because Lariat rules out meteor smash (and just about everything else) but it does open up an even wider gate for command grab setups. Early cancel moves and try to force a lariat out him (assuming haggar is on point) and then command grab. Like Nastyy says, punish pipe spamming w/orbital grudge.
Pressed for time now but i’ll post more when i get a chance. Please add more matchups to the thread or additional info to existing matchups as you see fit.
Let me just say that people need to let go of the Tron is a good matchup for Skrull thing. She definitely isn’t. If she starts on point she can quickly maul him with her fast startup normals/specials and Skrulls really slow moves. Then it’s self unblockable into TOD city.
I usually use orbital grudge as she jumps or drills in as OG has more armor than Tron’s drill and air H. If I feel Tron’s moves are too quick I just use QCF L orbital grudge because it has quicker startup
orbital grudge does NOT beat out hulk’s gamma charge but it does beat out standing H, but sentinel’s standing M beats out orbital grudge and Hulk’s standing H beats out sentinel’s standing M. (welcome to marvel :()
when i play my team (skrull, sent, wesker) against nova’s i usually call drones and use M meteor smash which lands in middle of screen. Most characters who have flight will try to move to the opposite side assuming your trying to meteor smash behind but I cut them off while they are trying to switch sides. Nova then falls into drones and I follow up with OG into fatal buster, launcher, L,M,H, air S, wesker gunshot otg+ rolling hook and meteor smash into super. Wesker’s otg gunshot can even line nova up for an anti air command grab, just call wesker gunshot after combo and the character will always recover in the air :). When they start getting wise and front air recover they jump right into a OG or air throw. Try to mix it up and be unpredictable.
Vergil- I play tons of vergils online so of course I have vergil tech!!! When I use my main team (skrull, sent, wesker) I try to anticipate Vergil at game start. If hes jumping towards you at the start then its an aggressive Vergil, if he keeps distance he’s looking to teleport. So ill label the types of Vergil’s as conservative and aggressive.
2.C. Vergil- punish teleports with throw or standing H. If he’s truly bothersome catch his teleport with inferno , xfactor and finish him!
Aggressive Vergil (A)- These are usually the ones who spam helm breakers (which orbital beats out). I have a reset that works
about 95% of the time with these type Vergils. Once I catch them in a combo I simply end the combo with meteor smash and NO super follow up. After meteor smash they will recover in the air and of course (like all other vergils) will come down with helmbreaker. After I meteor smash I anticipate that with (L) orbital grudge+fatal buster=full combo. I ALWAYS use L orbital because it has quicker startup than the M OG. Although when in xfactor I will use M or H OG.
A. Vergil- (anchor)- Satan himself, is always very fearsome w/lvl 3 xfctr. Being the completely random player I am sometimes I will attempt to command grab in anticipation of incoming super (which is how most anchor Vergil’s get the show started) ; and Vergil is surely not alone, Hawkeyes and Doctor Stranges use incoming supers alot too. Get the timing right (esp. if they’re mashers) and u should get them. But typically if I still have sentinel I call drones and meteor smash to other side. I have the timing downpacked for each character so it knocks them out of their supers
Spencer- Ive gotten pretty proficient at air throwing his wire grapples. I try to call drones and stay airborne from bionic arm, and BTW ORBITAL GRUDGE DOES BEAT OUT BIONIC ARM (if timed properly) I watched Hi im nastyy do it and Ive owned a few anchor, super spamming spencers with it. 1 guy I fought I actually baited it out. Heres the scenario- I only had skrull and wesker left and he was down to his anchor spencer. I knew he was anticipating an assist call (he was in lvl 3 xfactor too) So I waited till he was on the ground, got about midscreen distance, called wesker assist and immediately went into H orbital grudge. As expected he went right into bionic arm and Skrull ate that shit for breakfast!! THE END
Ammy- The concept for spencer wire grapples across the screen apply to ammy too. Air throw them or time a good anti air elastic punch or command grab or OG. I like to command grab ammy okami shuffle too (after the 1st element you have just enough time to get a grab if you time it right) if and whenever im in the situation. As far as nuetral game goes be mindful of ammy’s counter special when doing meteor smash. Mix it up and meteor smash in the same place or midscreen to throw her off. I have more strategies i use but too much to post
