Cody Vers. 2012 Changes

That’s because I’ve already said it’s a dumb idea back then and didn’t feel the need to say it again. Honestly the input for Zonk is what makes Cody such a fun and unique character.

And what the fuck, walk speed isn’t useful now?! Do you really not see just on that alone how much Cody’s pressure and footsie game is gonna improve? Cody already had good range on his throws so if that sticks that’s gonna give Cody a mean throw game, especially when you consider his options after landing a back throw. His options for landing Counter Hits are gonna be amazing now seeing how Cody does silly damage off of counter hits, and he still has a 3 frame short with great range. Hell you could already use his short to fish for cracks in people offense and with walk speed that’s going to be even easier to do.

I think you are getting lost in Cody’s mediocre defense to see how good is offense is gonna be. Yes you are gonna get rushed down, at this point Capcom see’s that as part of the character so if you can’t deal with getting rushed down and it might be time for a new main.

I disagree…if they wanted the character to be rushed down why even attempt to give him a wake-up option with bad spray/fadc etc? A tease? No most likely the buff just wasn’t thoroughly considered, and needs certain improvements to make it decently reliable.

cody was intended as “all around” character but his design flaws and damage lead to the assumption that he is a pure offensive character with an intended crappy defense. a misbelief. to be a offensive character he needs strong close mixup like a commandgrab, divekick, axe strike / cannon strike, great karathrow, overhead, ambigious crossups, mobility, various safejump setups with a 50/50 game etc. each character whose design is purely offensive has varous of those - cody has not with the exception of an overhead. he WAS given defense, he has average health and above average stun. he has zonig tools like bad rock and pokes like s.mk, s.hk, c.lk. further he has defense tools like zonk, ex cu. but everything he has is below average making his strong damage / stun the only thing that exceeds. his defense tools are a bad choice of design, his pokes a rather unuseful when it comes to a footsie battle. paired with his slow walkspeed, he turned out to be overall mediocre which is fine but prevents that he’ll ever be as good as say ryu, who is also designed to be overall balanced.

edit: that doesnt mean I want a command grab or something like that. I like cody the way he is with the exception of his backdash and the design of ex cu.

You say Capcom accidently made Cody pure offense with crappy defense but in Alpha 3 Cody was pure offense with crappy defense! Crazy I know!

Hell the only reason V-Ism dodges weren’t considered holy crap broken was because it gave him a tiny guard meter and he had next to nothing for defensive options.

you misunderstand. capcom didn’t “made” cody pure offensive, the COMMUNITY “made” (aka thinks) him pure offensive.

also alpha 3 can’t really be compared to street fighter 4. he played alot different then his sf4 incarnation. he had a better zoning rock arc, an infinity loop, and the mentioned alpha dodge which was all the defense he could ever need. alpha’s gameplay and mechanic were also alot different. air block and guard crush for instance, which both would help cody alot.

And you obviously havent seen of any of the location test videos have you? his walkspeed has barely increased 1pixel/second. Doesnt help with shit.

The main buff was to Cody’s overhead. I shouldn’t be the only one excited about it being combo-able.

better walkspeed is’t great. The only other real thing that Cody would need is: ZONK AS SHORIUKEN AND NOT A CHARGE MOVE AND 3/4 FRAME START UP.

only vs standing characters tho. that happens rarely… VERY RARELY.

I honestly think making the zonk a dp motion would actually make it worse, it would be much harder to use it as a reaction tool plus it’s not even a good move to just throw out there.

Not even worth talking about, they won’t change it. I like the charge motion, stuff like that and bad spray makes him unique :smiley:

Walk speed needs to be faster than the minimal amount they can increase it by! Knife buffs and bad spray buffs are interesting, make the character feel fresh I guess.

I would like a better backdash, PLEASE CAPCOM! Make it go further or make it faster, make it better somehow please!

also ultra II, especially against “air characters” like blanka, thawk etc, should have a larger window you can juggle it all. Against blanka for example, especially online, if you want to punish the vertical ball you have to be 100% sure that blanka hits the ground but still “on the move” otherwise he’ll get only the sand, and it’s really hard. You have also an example Zukuu when we last played a couple of days ago, you OS the ultra II and I backdashed but caught me airborne thus did not connect. that should be somehow buffed I think.

To be honest, the only times I really see Zonk worth using anyway is when you have a fireball character cornered. aka Guile and Dee Jay to name a few that makes this move shine. otherwise, Zonk shouldn’t be really your first thought as a special.

doesn’t need to be DP. Don’t want random zonk while i’m walking back and forth. If you can’t hold down a button or 2 for a reversal or a punish, then you probably shouldn’t be complaining or just play someone who does have a real SF4 DP.

You should always have a zonk charge in a lot of matchups. Every fireball character, Rog and Fei, to name a few.

More pushback on EX Zonk could possibly end up making it safer or more difficult to punish which would make it a decent buff, any increase to walk speed at all, no matter how slight is also a decent buff. He’s also been given plenty of new options ( which is never a bad thing ) they’re just not going to be braindead abusable options.

The buffs i find dissapointing are to the knife, they sound like great changes but it’s no easier to hang on to the damn thing, if Cody could tech throws while holding the knife that would be huge.

If most Cody players here are honest they’d admit that Cody could of recieved damage nerfs in 2012 so the fact he got no nerfs at all is already a bonus, no one really knows how significant the buffs will be at the moment, although they may not look great on paper it’s probably too early to write them off as useless.

can’t think of anything gamebreaking he could refer to, unless it’s an unannounced change (which I doubt) or something about the knife (which I doubt aswell).

The fact that you have to hold down a button is sort of why I’m not so attracted to the Zonk, but since I rarely use it it’s nice to surprise opponents who forget that it’s in my moveset.
You know what could make it really cool though?
A big ol’ wall bounce on the EX. Hahahaha.
