Yea, didn’t get why everyone was saying he was going to be top tier.The people who claimed that probably were unfamiliar with him and so thought that the badspray buff would be like Ryu’s shoryuken to ultra, and that he would receive an Akuma walkspeed, and that that comboing into overhead would actually happen during a match lol.
the new walkspeed is impressive, to a Cody scrub like me anyway. it should help against fireball fights like vs Sagat.
It should also be easier to get in there for a surprise grab or perhaps F+MP will be a lot stronger when used during a forward-walk.
What else…footsies will be a LOT stronger, especially for players like Sasaki who’s always throwing out that OS cr.LK xx LP Crim…idk. I know Cody’s buffs seem like shyt right now but I hope they let him keep the changes. Or better yet give him more buffs. USEFUL ones like sayyyyy, a backdash with better distance and less recovery?? Please and thank you Capcom!
That link is a much better indication of the walk speed improvements. This makes me feel a lot better. Nice find.
Yeah, his forward walk you can notice you can notice a lot more of a change, which I think will improve his up close mixup and throw game. I kinda wish they gave the same treatment to his backwalk, because otherwise he can’t really control space all that more, or get into that good of a footsie game without being able to walk out of poking space. Ah well, I guess we get what we get.
I think my urge to play rose comes from that crippled backdash from cody, seeing how I absolutley abuse her godlike backdash. meh, screw the walkspeed I want a decent backdash!
Yep… could recognize that for me, too When I play a character with nice backdash, I totally abuse it… and it works…
They should make f.hk move backwards.
Or give us V-Ism dodge back.
I also abuse rose’s backdash and feel that it is a strong reason why I play her as well.
I think If Capcom want to make Cody a more stable and overall more complete character they are going to have to pick their poison and chose between two different buffs that they are obviously scared of giving him :
A-Give him an even better back and forward walk speed (around Cammy-Balrog level) so that he’ll be a strong offensive/footsie character which would justify his poor defense options, this would likely be at the expense of some slight damage and stun nerfs across the board.
B-Give him a good backdash so that his spacing and defence overall is slightly better whilst still maintaining poorer defensive options.
I think the latter would be quicker to implement and would be a much more safe bet in terms of balancing since it would not cause too much of a dramatic change to how Cody plays as a character.
To be honest, I wouldn’t mind if his backdash recovery time was cut down a bit. It’s already fast, just make it so you can at least block a baited SRK and keep the momentum going. Just something I thought of the other day. It would at least help in baiting some things or at least being able to block some setups.

lol, I’m kind of the opposite. I used to main Chun Li until February of this year, then I really loved Cody so I switched. I have no idea how I could endure not having Chun’s backdash anymore :wgrin:. You also used to play Gen though, his backdash is great (Not better than Rose’s backdash though)
I agree with this. But just to note, you can already bait Ryu/Akuma SRKs with Cody’s current backdash, I think its only Ken’s SRK and Guile’s Flash kick that hit you regardless (Need to test those…)

I remember reading something about exactly this topic. they had this in the alpha version of the game and the testers said it was way too broken. the result was that it were removed and we got zonk as compensation… : X

i feel devastated after reading that. they basically neutered Cody.
Watch this video, go to 1 hour and 12 minutes, and see Cody get jabbed out of not one, but 2 EX reversals just trying to get Yun off of him. Someone said it on the last page, blocking is important, but if you just try to block all day, you’ll get wrecked.
No one is asking to give Cody a shoryu, but it just seems like with the (what looks like) fairly minor walk speed buff, and his still poor back dash/back walk speed, he needs something that he can do if he sees the opponent coming a mile away to just say “get off me” and make people think twice.’
I hope he gets something. With the changes they seem set on making, I’m not sure how much he can get buffed and not make him broken (mainly talking about walk speed). Not as optimistic as originally, but it’s not over and time will tell.
I keep playing and wishing regular zonk traveled farther. It’s hard to get good players to fireball at close range.
Well you can zonk inbetween a blocked attack and a fireball, so it was sorta kept in with a higher execution barrier.
The knife buffs are so weird, I guess its because nobody uses it unless they are trolling.
A better backdash is what is needed, as it is integral to SFIV gameplay. But walk speed is very nice
Yea he doesn’t seem That much better…of course it could be worse. It seems so far that out of the low-midish characters Cody (n maybe Juri/Gouken?..) got the most love…characters like Dudley, Vega, Guile, ROSE :’{ , Guy etc kinda got the shaft as far as actual improvements.
Yoga Tower, Coward Crouch and the crouch from Blanka work very similarly to Cody’s dodge, I’m not buying those arguments. Heck, even after 3 (?) years of SFIV I still don’t understand how Yoga Tower works…even Daigo was puzzled at some tournament against Filipino Champ.
