cody has several more weakspots then the lacking of a reversal. ex cu buff would be nowhere near “too good”.
I like that Zonk is a charge move that forces him to give up some tools (but not all) to use. I like that it’s FADCable and comboable on hit. I like that it’s slow startup so it’s not amazing, and I like that it’s completely invincible to the hit. I also like that you can’t just use it on wake up and beat all crossups or high-hitting air moves. It means sometimes (ie, often), Cody should just block on wakeup, just like, when Cody is pressuring his opponent, often blocking is the best answer.
Basically, all these problems can be solved just by blocking. Obviously that’s harder than it sounds, but I don’t think the answer is to just give Cody a better reversal, or a better backdash, or whatever. I like that you have to block in this game. Cody has to play intelligent offense AND intelligent defense to win, and to me that is a well-built character.
No good anti-airs? Are we playing the same character?
Granted I will give it that he doesn’t have any great reversals/escapes, and coming from a character like Bison who has too many, it’s rough. But try playing Gouken if you think Cody’s wakeup is bad. Blocking is a pretty solid option and when you learn not to rely on godlike reversals, you become pretty good at it…
I tell you what. If cody had a reversal like Juri’s EX pinwheel would that be reasonable? I say that BC I mained Juri and switched over to cody and both characters suffer from something. In general Cody is much better bc he is stronger, hits harder, has more HP, and has nasty stunning combos. I guess his design is to hit his BnB combo and go for stun. It’s like he is perfect for a tag character but not stand alone. I don’t know, If they gave Roundhouse RK invincibility like Bingo to be used as a reversal would be sweet. How many frames is that move again?

I’m starting to wonder how many people played Cody back in Alpha 3. Hell in AE Cody is already a lot stronger defensively compared to his A3 days.
Basically Capcom has Cody pinned as a pure offensive character, which is why the buffs he got in AE and is getting in 2012 help him establish that offense.
Man Infil…you really like hammering characters down lol. You’re fine with the Yang nerfs and want Cody to remain “mediocre”. I do agree with you on the Cody issue, just noting it out lol.
Right now, I think their changes to endorse the use of knife are moot, unless they change the mechanic to hold it. Although depending how hard it is to make Cody drop it or to allow him to pick it up might be too overpowered, because knife normals are the best in the game.

I’ll tell you what, If they allowed us to cancel reg. bingo or let Roundhouse RUFF kick to hit crouchers, even though there aren’t many fans of U1, you know how easy it is to hit confirm with cody? It would be solid gauranteed damage like Chung Li’s U2. It would be nice to have that shit why not, with damage scaling caused by that combo (c.j, c.j mp into R.RK) FADC U1, it wouldn’t be that much to ask. It would be a nice option and just extra damage. (yea I know cody’s bnb’s do more damage but maybe FADC into crack kick ex cU ect…the options would be there virtually every round.
Just saw the walkspeed and it has barely improved making it an almost pointless buff. As i’ve said before the backdash is an awful lot more important and useful than walk speed unless it is an major increase. All the cody players still remain using his moves to be mobile along with his forward dash because the walk speed still isn’t fast enough, it will only be relevant if it is to the level of cammy-Balrog which would significantly mess up balance in some match ups.
The knife is still useless as well it seems since it still falls from random trades,single hits, teching etc, thats exactly why the thing should only fall during knockdown… smh.
Overall i’m only really liking the bad spray and overhead change, but they should scrap the walk speed and just give him a slightly better backdash and he’ll be fine.
I agree that he is a well-built character. I also agree that, as of now, Cody should block cross-ups/jump-ins on wake up. However, if you just sit and block all day you will get wrecked. You need to learn how to release the EX Zonk properly while blocking to play intelligent defense with Cody. Also, I disagree that it’s slow startup makes it not amazing. The slow startup and long invincibility window is a plus as you can use it to go through a lot of moves. I’ve beaten other characters Ultra combos using the EX Zonk before.
But regardless of how you and I feel, the fact of the matter is, when was the last time you saw a competitive Cody player place even top 32 at any big tournament? Even a high level player like Momochi, who still considers Cody his main, uses Yun at tournaments. That says something. Cody needs either an on-reaction reversal or a longer back dash. And receiving those changes wont make him anywhere near overpowered, it will simply make him competitive.

Minus the “really liking bad spray and overhead change” part though. Bad spray is still too easy to get around (or you can simply throw him out of its startup) and good luck landing the overhead on a standing opponent.

I agree that they aren’t great but they now have increased utility that can be realistically used to benefit Cody during a match in some way, whereas the walk speed and knife changes are entirely pointless changes imo.
There was a point, the whole point of knife buffs was to make it more useful. Faster walk speed makes footsies better. You can tell they are trying to encourage Cody players to step outside conventional strategies.
What use is there to buff the properties of the knife if you still can’t realistically hold onto it?
The walkspeed buff doesn’t improve footsies at all considering that it’s still fairly slow, and in general cody doesn’t have many moves with a good enough start up to take advantage of the current walk speed increase.Their was a reason every Cody player in the AE2012ver was using forward dash, backdash, f.hk and f.mp for mobility as usual.
Guys what do you say we make another thread on capcom-unity, a petition of sorts, asking Capcom to give Cody a longer backdash rather than this 1 pixel/second faster walkspeed?
Considering that there is still time til AE 2012’s release, these changes might not be final.
I still think that a EX CU buff would be nice. This would still not be a good antiair reversal, like srk or sth like that. It’ll just be a good grounded reversal.

Are they still taken request from us?I thought they were going to review results and performance from the location tests then make informed decisions based of what they had gathered.Either way It might not hurt to try, but i’m not sure how many people here actually care enough about the backdash buff.
They have what we want. everything else is more like annoying QQ.
Give them time to review their location tests (which are not finished yet afair), while I doubt they’ll modify in a major degree, I think they WILL tweak a few characters here and there. Seeing that Cody has their interest, I think we might see further change(s) in time. maybe unannounced if no new dev blog will be made. time will tell.
Even tho I can comprehend your disappointment about the walkspeed increase, don’t talk it down THAT much - it’s still a buff that WILL make using cody slightly easier/better, with no down side to it.
Huh…I found the walkspeed buff very significant, but only when moving forwards. Backwards it’s still slow as fuck.
