Marvel vs Capcom 2 was a bad example for this argument but I’m happy you used it in your rebuttal before I did. You can indeed have tech “made up” in that game-- however it’s based on hitbox data & glitches/ game mechanic flaws that were discovered by players. MvC2 was a gigantic mix of both, including most loops and Mag’s launcher flaw. If patch updates were possible then, we’d be playing a much different MvC2 (and MvC3) right now.
However that was then, and this is now; Capcom has a much more vested interest in these games post 2009, and knows much more of what these characters can do. For this reason I do indeed give them much more credit in knowing what’s going on. The only reason why they “nerf” anything is when they feel a certain mechanic or statistic will be abusive or very unfavorable in match ups (specific vanilla loops, Sent’s health, etc). And yes, they full well knew Phoenix was broken-- she was marketed that way by everyone from Niitsuma to Seth Killian as grossly overpowered. She was later nerfed because people abused her too much rather than learning the metagame. They also admitted that they didn’t fix the DHC glitch because they were already working on Ultimate Marvel 3. I would assume fixing the glitch would be redundant when you are already making a newer version of the same game without said glitch.
Also, no game under the sun to this day has been glitch free; you know you shouldn’t have used that as a point of argument. I’m gonna skip the “know your history” quip you made and chalk it up to you thinking everyone here is an 09er or something.
Your definitions of “technology” is also overused and misplaced. There is a lot of “technology” that will never be removed simply because it works within how the developers intended the character(s) to work. Morrigan spamming, Zero/Magneto/Dr. Strange Loops come to mind (ironically ROM loop was a broken mechanic from MvC2 that they decided to keep). If you said “tactics” like just previously said, I would have agreed with you-- those are invented from learning hitbox & frame data, something that devs seemingly have a greater handle over than before. Players really shouldn’t expect hardcore nerfs in this game for the very reason, unless of course an infinite is discovered or something game changing like the DHC Glitch. They removed a certain Mad Beast loop from Jill, for example. I bet my top dollar that the Storm glitch you mentioned isn’t something grand enough to warrant a removal. If you want to continue that discussion in PMs, that’s fine with me.
If you want to hold onto technology, that’s perfectly fine as well. However, it severely hinders the growth of the communities in said games, leading to players like Dieminion, players who constantly win with no real challenge in their area, due to the competition not leveling up as they could. (That’s probably more so a problem with other players being lazy or just not exposed to high level play constantly as well) He’s already made mention a few times that he hates the fact that his only real challenge is Sanford Kelly and that he’s working on helping others level up.
Finally, I’d want to win a major tournament by playing solid and having shared information with other great players, rather than withholding technology and waiting to bust it out then. You never know who could take the information you know and build upon it. That’s part of what made MvC2 so amazing, despite it being a broken to hell game (also the hype, lol).
