Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Thread

Hey what’s happenin everyone. I’ve noticed that there’s not 2 much of a gaming scene here in the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky area when it comes to fighting games. Hopefully, this thread will help put an end to that.

I know there’s ppl here on SRK that are from this area or visit this area that like 2 play fighting games, but have no competition around here, since there’s little to no awareness or knowledge of ppl that play these games around this area.

I’m making this thread in hopes 2 get that awareness & knowledge out there, & 2 get a fighting game scene developed in this region.

It sucks that ppl have 2 travel far or for a couple hours out of the way in order to get some decent competion in fighting games. With this thread, we can get some ppl 2 become a lot more interested in fighting games that they love 2 play, & w/ the fact that knowing that there’s ppl who like playing the same games you do, it will peak those interests significantly, get some good competition going in this area, & make you wanna play those games even more.

So 2 all of you out there in the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky region, post up, & let us know what fighting games you like 2 play so we can get this thing started.

I’ll go on ahead & get this rollin.

Games I mainly play: Tekken 5, Tekken Tag, Soul Calibur II & III.

My main game for sure is Tekken 5. It is probly one of my favorite games out there. However, I just like to play any kind of Tekken game period. That’s why I like playing Tekken Tag as well. All the peeps I hang out w/ & play fighting games w/ love 2 play some Tekken as well. I always welcome competition to Tekken 5 & Tekken Tag, & my friends do as well.

Soul Calibur II & III are some damn good games. I love playing those as well. Some of my friends & I are looking 2 get this going here 2. Those games are always fun 2 play & 2 get some competition going w/ them.

Virtua Fighter is a game I like 2 dabble in myself. A couple of my friends like playing this game as well & are pretty good @ it, but there’s not 2 many ppl I know here that play a lot of this game. It seems VF is really popular in Columbus. Maybe we can get this popularity for the game going here as well.

There’s a lot more fighting games out there that are pretty badass, such as: Guilty Gear, DOA, 3rd Strike, etc. I’m not 2 familiar w/ those games, but I’m always up for learning some new games 2 play.

There are a few people in Cinci that play fighting games. But hardly anyone plays 3D stuff, and most people have just quit entirely because of too many real life obligations and no one realy wants to get stuff together. Off the top of my head I only know 3 people who play 3D stuff that often (and even then, its not that often). There are PLENTY of people who want to play fighters in Cinci, but getting them together to do it is a pain in the ass. There are a few people who play Guilty Gear, but thats about it. Cinci threads always die. Its best to just go with C-bus or Ky threads.

hey joe, who are the plenty of people who want to play fighting games around cincy? i’m wondering if there’s new people i haven’t met or all the OG team cincy players…

sluch, i didn’t get to meet you at the KY tourney because i don’t play 3D games period, but i like your enthusiasm. for a brief history of cincy fighting games…

there used to be a guy named adam (keits) who organized things called UFGT’s (ultimate fighting game tournaments) that had every game you can imagine with non-cash prizes. i only attended one at funkDOC’s house in the middle of nowhere OH, but it was an absolute blast, probably because his mom cooked for all of us the entire weekend. we also had a tilt at the florence mall with cvs1, mvc2, A3, some tekken stuff, and SvC (until it took about 2 days to realize that game is garbage). we lobbied to get cvs2 or 3S, but no dice.

…then adam moved away, and the tilt eventually closed due to poor business. then people just kind of stopped playing due to no organized events. i’d still play casual with chris rose every now and then, but the whole cincy scene just died out. we have/had some great players, like myself, chris rose, frank, josh q, bluenu, joe fry, redcyclone, poon, joshthefunkDOC, and many more, i’m just bad with names.

i’ve tried to get things rolling in lexington and it’s been going fine. what you’ve gotta realize is that this area of the country has NEVER been known for fighting games, so driving an hour south to lexington or 2 hours north to columbus (or nearly 4 up to bloomington IN) is NOT bad for a tournament. it’s not ideal, but it’s just how it is. not having an arcade that everybody can hang out at with lots of different games sucks, plain and simple.

oh yea, and i play cvs2, 3S, mvc2, and A3. i’m by far the best at cvs2 and then 3S, but i can compete in any of those other games. i’ve never had any interest to learn 3D or any new games like guilty gear because i just don’t have enough time. if capcom comes out with a NEW street fighter or good vs. game, i might try to learn that, but jumping genres completely is simply learning too much new shit. at evo’s and the texas showdown i went to, people told me i would play a good slayer because he can practically roll cancel and my execution was so good, but nobody took the time to teach it to me, and i never wanted to dig through random forums everywhere.

peace

Chris is still around owning face. Josh and I are trying to get back into it. John, I’m not to sure about, he plays when asked to, but we haven’t played anything but guilty gear in forever. Chase (redcyclone) I haven’t seen too often, I’m not really sure whats up with him. I played him in some last blade and alpha 3, but hes mega out of practice, but I bet we could get him back in the game. Frank, who knows. There are only a few random nameless people that I bump into now and then, and they arn’t even that good at what they play.

Like, all ‘the’ crew of people plays anymore is Guilty Gear, and its mostly me and Ryan who sucks bad at everything else, and only because NO one wants to play ANYTHING else. A few people got sucked into World of Warcraft, and just don’t do anything anymore. Some moved away as well. It just feels like there are less people. Any more I’m not really that interested in the popular stuff, a lot of it is so so so old. CvS2 and MvC2 were new when I was still in like, High School… damn. I think if anything, you could get people (John/Mike/Chris (not rose)?) to play the new tekken if you tried. But like, NO ONE cares about the old classics that rule suprime around SRK. I’d rather play obscure stuff like Jojos Bizzare Adventure or Last Blade 2 just because I haven’t seen it played out a thousand times yet. But yeah, Guilty Gear  for sure. I’ll play that all day.

One thing I do know is that there is a huge base for people who like Naruto and Smash Brothers. But you woln’t hear me calling those games fighting games.

I hope you can help rebuild the Cincy fighting scene some. I’d def recommend traveling to C-bus, everyone who plays games there is friendly and pretty serious about what they’re good at, and you can find very good 2-D and 3-D there.

Thank you guys very much for the feedback here. I noticed there really wasn’t any activity on this thread I made here for a couple of days, but that’s not the case anymore. Let me go on ahead & address some of the comments you guys made.

Joe Fry: You’re absolutely correct about what you said on ur posts here. There are a few ppl here in the Cincy area that like 2 play fighting games, but those that do play fighting games, usually play 2-D fighting games. That’s really cool & very awesome. I love a lot of those games, but I just suck horrifically @ all of them. That’s why I’m always open 2 playing & learning these games.

I usually play 3-D fighting games like Tekken & Soul Calibur b/c I understand the mechanics of those games much better for some reason. I usually play a lot of these games & play ppl who play these games as well. My friends & I, for example, always have fight nights w/ Tekken 5 @ Gameworks on Monday nights, & every now & then, we go 2 each others’ houses & play those games as well. However, it’s tough just 2 organize that, & like you said Joe, it’s a pain in the ass 2do so. That’s very tough 2 build up a scene when a lot of ppl are busy doing other shit. It’s tough 4 me 2 even find spare time anymore.

Popoblo: Thank you for the brief history of the fighting game scene here around in Cincy. I know you used 2 live around here & were really big in2 the fighting game scene we somewhat had up here for a lil bit. I know you were down @ the tourney in Lexington a couple of weeks ago. I was 2, but I don’t think I got a chance 2 meetya or talk 2ya there. Thank you for the words of encouragement as well. I’m doing my best @ trying 2 build this up, but it is tough. Ppl are just 2 busy, & from that, it’s very strenuous 2 organize anything.

I was definately looking in2 that history you gave me popoblo. Very cool stuff. I used 2 love the Tilt @ the Florence Mall when it was open, but unfortunately, due 2 not making enough money, it went out of business. The only arcade I go 2 is Gameworks (where I work) as of now. It’s not bad, but the fighting games available there are a fucking joke! They only have T5, T4, & VF4. I haven’t heard 2 much about D&B w/ there fighting games, so I don’t even waste my time of going there & checking things out. Not having a good selection of fighting games @ arcades certainly hinders the progress of building a scene for these types of games, that it certainly does.

Ghaleon: Thanks 4 ur words of encouragement as well. I’ll do my damnest 2 try & build it up here. Also, thank you for the info about going other places 2 get some competion going. I’ve started travelling a lil bit in order 2 do that. I’ll be going up the the tourney in C-bus this weekend 2 do that. I know u will be up there as well Ghaleon. I’ll be going there w/ Josh & a few other peeps you already or might already know, so more than likely I will meetya up there. Also looking forward 2 meeting everyone else that I will be going up there w/ if I haven’t done so already @ work down @ Gameworks. This should be a pretty awesome tournament up there.

Looking forward 2 getting some more feedback & comments from all of you guys. I’ll catchya guys later.

People play in Cincy?

Yes, they do. It’s just a bitch getting ppl 2 play. Ppl having shit 2 do & transportation issues make it difficult 4 ppl 2 do so.

Damn, this shit is dead!

If you missed out on Season’s Beatings in Dec, here’s another chance to play Ohio’s best – 2/24, check it out, hope to see you there.

Season’s Beatings in Dec was some good shit. Anyone from around Cincy & NKY, check out this link for this tournament in Columbus coming up on Feb 24, it’s gonna be some good shit. Make it if u can.

Just letting anybody out there know if they’re interested, every week on Monday night, usually between 9:00 - 12:00 @ night, we have fight night for Tekken 5.0 down @ Gameworks on Newport on the Levee.

A whole bunch of peeps (including myself) go down & play T5 for about 3 hours down @ Gameworks. What’s cool is that the games in Tekken are free (I work there & got it covered), so u don’t have 2 bring money down 2 pay for any games (in Tekken only though, anything else, u gotta pay for).

Plus, it’s a BYOC (Bring Your Own Controller/Joypad) type of deal, & u can plug ur controller or joystick in2 the Tekken 5 game down there.

For directions, just type in Gameworks, 1 Levee Way, Newport, KY 41071 in2 Mapquest or GoogleMap to find out where the place is @, or just post up & ask me. The Levee is off of I-471 on Exit 5. The sign should read: Exit 5, 8 in a white circle (stands for Route 8), Newport, Bellevue.

Parking is pretty easy. The Levee has a huge garage. I believe it costs $2 to park there (good thing 2 do since it’s cold as shit). If u don’t wanna do that, you can park on the streets surrounding the Levee. The best place I’ve noticed 2 park outside is near the 4th Street Elementary School. It’s very close & easy 2 walk 2 from there. There are parking meters there, but @ nights, the cops don’t check them, so u won’t get a ticket for not putting any money in them. I’ve done it b4 numerous times.

2 all those interested, make it down if u can. I usually have a pretty good crowd of my peeps down there 2 play some Tekken. It’s pretty sweet, so come down if u can make it anytime. If interested, just show up or post me up on here on this thread. Hope 2 cya down there.

Peace.

I play GG and SC II and III. I’m pretty damn good at SC, I’m the moderator for the SCIII Kilik forums.

If anyone ever wants to drive to west chester, I’m always game.

I’m glad ur keeping SC alive macarthur. I’ll have 2 brush up & head over sometime 2 play you. It won’t happen these next couple of weeks (due to school, spendin time w/ the g/f, goin 2 the c-bus tourney, etc.), but after that, I’ll be down for some SC action bro.

I have a few friends that might wanna join in on the fray as well, so I’ll let them know, & I’ll get back 2ya macarthur.

Hmm…

Westside Cincinnatian (that even a word? I hope so) here… never figured there’d be this many folks from these parts.

For what it’s worth, I’m lookin’ fer some (likely) 3S/HSF2 (I love the older 2D fighters, and if it’s on XBox, can bring the copy if necessary), though if you wanted to do DC games (have a good number of those, but erm… 'yar, matey’ed), I’d likely want to use some kind of converter, though I doubt the SFAC stick (yeah, yeah, say what ya want… I still think it’s rather decent) would work well with alot of 'em.

Probably gonna get my ass kicked at anything I try against y’all, but hey… never hurts to see where yer at, right?

Hey there… I’m in Oxford, I got to Miami of Ohio… so I’m like 45 minutes out of cinci, and I’d be more than willing to drive for some games… I’ll play pretty much any 2d fighter… like 3s and A3 the best I’d ahve to say… but I’m up for whatever, and I do have interest in learning 3d games… soo… whatevers good!

hey, if that’s the case, then i’d highly recommend coming to the columbus OH tourney this weekend.

http://forums.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=123768

there will be some really solid 3S competition there and a few people want to play lots of A3 (me included). if you play any cvs2, then that’s my main game. tournaments don’t happen around here too often, so i’d try real hard to get to this one.

peace

What’s happenin Tiberious & Sailboat.

This Saturday (Feb 24), there’s gonna be a pretty nice tourney up in Columbus for Tekken 5, 3rd Strike, Guilty Gear, & Marvel Vs. Capcom 2.

If you guys can, try 2 make it up there. It’s gonna be pretty good. There’s gonna be good comp for those games & more than likely, from other games as well there. Check out the link that Popoblo set up. It shows all the info for the tournament & where it’s at.

For me, I mainly play 3D fighters (Tekken being my main game, & I play Soul Calibur as well), but I’m down w/ playing some 2D fighters, learning, & getting my ass kicked in them.

If you guys ever wanna get some games in, just let me know. My name is Mike (Sluch).

If you guys wanna get ahold of some other peeps to play some games, look for these guys: Derrick (Legend 2), Josh (jbeene), Joe (Joe Fry), Chris Rose (don’t know his handle), Diego (forgot what his handle is) and (MacArthur Blunts).

Between all of us around here in the Cincy area, you guys can find someone to play some figthing games in. Just let one of us know & we’ll get something together.

Gonna hate to burst yer bubble, but weekends == horrible time for me.

As crazy as it sounds, that’s where most of my work comes in.

A weeknight, on the other hand…

And I’m not very thrilled with the 3D fighters, ESPECIALLY Tekken. I think I actually enjoyed Mace: The Dark Age more than Tekken (2). Soul Calibur’s alright, but, of course, the home versions aren’t arcade-perfect (extra characters), so that’s likely out, too.

Alpha 3 or 3rd Strike, though… I’m up for that. Hell, maybe even NG or 2I if the mood strikes anyone (be forewarned, however: I’m NOT above taking ye olde Cheapass (rhymes with ‘Will’; ‘Let me be the blesser of all souls’) for a spin or two, though I’d more likely than not announce my intentions beforehand (love to see some decent CA vs. CA matchups).
