Chun-li Video/Discussion Thread

I’m normally an observer here but I though I should share this, didn’t see this one in the video topic !!! Really really nice chun in my opinion !!! I wish I could do that focus pressure with chun !!!

Yeah that is a good chun but has already been posted in the general thread, still its nice to have a link to it from this thread

I’ve been lurking around here for a while trying to watch videos and read general strategies, but now since I just got myself a Dazzle I thought I could record some of my matches and post it here for advice. I have to warn you guys though, I’m probably just a little-below average to average player. Some of these matches aren’t beautiful, but I’m just looking for some advice to improve my game.

If you could also watch other Street Fighter 4 channels other than my Chun-Li, that would be great.

Thanks in advance.

I’ve been lurking for quite some time too and while I can’t record videos I have decided to contribute what I can:

 1. STOP JUMPING OVER FIREBALLS TOWARD THE OPPONENT. I didn’t see you focus a single fireball. Unfortunately Chun’s air game isn’t so hot so instead of jumping towards the opponent over fireballs leaving you wide open for AA attacks, work on first focus and dashing through fireballs and then work on the timing hazanshu over them.

 2. Don’t use c.RH as your standard poke. Yes her sweep is very good but as you face better opps. they will focus it and punish you if you throw them out so predictably.

 3. I see you like to use j.fp x2>c.fp a lot but if its blocked I believe chun is at a disadvantage. Try to work on canceling the second hit of the c.fp into a lk Hazanshu or try mixing it up after the initial j.hp.

 4. Work on the timing to combo into ultra. I’ll be honest I could certainly not regularly do it for a LONG time but its so important you have to be able to do it if you play Chun. Also work on ultraing through fireballs.

 5. Stop using DF+RH so much. Its good when its unexpected but the more you do it the more likely the opp will catch on and punish you for it. Try to get the feel for what the opp does on wakeup and counter it.

 6. Don’t mash regular legs. This is the number one problem with my gameplay and I am trying very hard not to do it because it leaves you so vulnerable. Definitely use EX legs as its the best weapon after her normals but you have to be able to hit EX and not regular. Start with the basic c.lk.clk EX Legs and build on it from there.

Your dashing is pretty decent and throw timings as well but your basic damage dealing capabilities are weak. Learn the BNB moves and your game will improve a lot.

Using FAs isn’t really part of any of my games, but I am trying incorporate it into my game. Just something I need to work on and feel more comfortable with. Yeah, I tend to abuse DF+RH a bit too much. I never really want to do regular legs, but it happens due to a bit of spamming.

What exactly are Chun-Li’s BNB moves, the one I’ve seen is just c.lk into ex legs.

Thanks for the advice.

cr.lk/cr.lp cr.lk/cr.lp st.lp st.fp is a great no meter BNB combo.

Jump in target combo cr.fpx1 xx med SBK is great damage.

Hazanshu, cr.short cr.short EX legs

st.cl.RH into any type of legs

Use training to work on Focusing fireballs, its very important. Not only does it nullify chip but it gives you revenge and can surprise the opponent if they are close. Ark mentioned all the BNBs I can never get 2 cr.shorts before the legs usually i end up doing one and then legs but its still a great move especially good when the opp is fireball spamming.

Yeah, I’ll go get working on FAs, but what about my playing style? Am I too aggressive, too passive? I’m more of an aggressive player, but sometimes turtles destroy me because I end up just chasing them the entire match.

Here is some matces of me fighting a really solid sakura was fun

Right then I’ll be honest here and say I only watched the first vid (will watch the other and add to my feedback if needed).

A lot of the basic issues have been covered but here goes with my take on that first match.

Firstly everytime you got an opening you seemed to use the same combo (ending with legs) and nearly everytime you got punished after. I checked and each time you did, you had super bar, you really should be using EX legs on the end of everything you put normal legs on if you’ve got the bar. More damage, safer and leads to other set-ups.

EX moves in general! For large portions of the match you had super (in fact a full super bar) and you never used it  You really should get used to sticking EX SBK into some combos (my fave is df.rh, cr.mk, EX SBK). EX SBK is also a good AA move and you used it only once for that on a wake up.

A few times you put HSU on the end of block strings, this is not a bad tactic but it appeared that you didn’t 2 in 1 them, and instead did it a little after, get into training and nail the timings on your 2 in 1 stuff so you don’t get big gaps between your pressure. For HSU, SBK and Kikokens.

As already mentioned FA fireballs more and work on your spacing so if Akumas Air Fireballs you you’re the right distance away to dash forwards under them to avoid them and get closer to Akuma (Chun can beast Akuma at close range - or at least I think that)

Try to mix your game up a bit, vary your chain combos to end on st.fp or cr.mk more, just hitting with 3 weak punches isn’t taking advantage of the fact you got into an attacking position.

throw in a few low to high attacks from time to time, like cr.mk to HSU (2 in 1) so your opponent doesn’t just have to block down all the time.

if you get the chance try to punish whiffed moves (like DP) with a combo, like cr.fp , cancel into mk. SBK you seemed to just throw out cr.fk everytime.

Lastly have fun and try new things and… throw when you get the chance…

Hope that helped and to be fair there are some other Chuns here that will be able to give you loads of other feedback so don’t be worried about asking about anything really, I am pretty sure some of the other guys here can offer you better advice but the above points are the things I do differently at a general level

only watched the first match… your strategy is indeed average, which is a good thing as that means that you have the ability to figure out how to play chun.

the other critiques that you got from the fellowship ™ were spot on.
learn to jump STRAIGHT UP over fireballs, hasan shu is indeed good for going over them but it needs to be done early most of the time which just puts you in harms way if they did a half screen focus instead. so… bide your time by focusing, blocking, straight jumping, kikokening and the occasional hasan shu to deal with fireballs… if you get predictable with ANY of these your opponent can make you pay, so being somewhat random and mixing them up is the name of the game… the fact that you werent doing this is what makes your strategy more or less average.

also your connection was either somewhat slow or your reactions are, this is online so its hard to critique things.

for instance you missed ex lightning legs almost everytime… this could very well be because of online or it could be cause your execution needs work.

good start, you showed some decent ability to watch your opponent and see how he moves his character and act accordingly… ie you were actually thinking not just throwing out shit.

to get better: learn more strategies, improve execution and above all else attack harder and faster… make them adjust to YOU.

You dont need to anticipate Tiger Shots like that. In fact, even if he had shot, you woulda been hit out of Ultra, even a Dash one. If you are baiting Tiger Shots, use cr.hp to move forward and keep charge.

Also, full screen Ex Kikokens are a waste of meter

I noticed you’ll poke with shorts and jabs then just stop. (possibly baiting?) Try mixing it up. Use a Lv 1 FA > Dash to get back into block string range, (from here, more block strings, throw, bait, etc) or atleast end block strings with kikoken for chip damage

Also, you were so worried about Dash Ultraing that it came too late and he was out of recovery. If your reflexes are good enough, you do not need Dash Ultra, even if they are full screen

If you KNOW an Akuma wil start off the round with a jump back fireball, you can double dash under at the start and hit him with Tenshyo Kyaku, hk.HSU, or if you are quick enough, cr.hp xx mk.SBK

Dont always try t jump over them once your block string puts you out of range. Predictability is your worst enemy in this game

I like your poke usage thoguh, very nice. And that Sakura is one of the best Ive seen, though I havent seen many

1st game

2nd game

3rd game [ as you can tell the other person,Crow, knows how to play the game better than me ]

it was 1 match single elimination. 21 people enter. tied for 5th place. not bad i guess~

this is actually like my first time entering a sf4 tourney. still new to the game.

i’m the playing chun-li ;o

Charge D/B instead of backwalking, you aren’t doing yourself a favour, especially against Sagat.
