Chun-li Video/Discussion Thread

Well I got a lot of Ryu video requests and I just found out that I have no Ryu specialist on my buddy list…

But…I came across a Ryu player that surprisingly didn’t fall for normal Chun vs Ryu shit we’d look for in here, like dash ultra and hasan-shu nonsense.

Sorry about the camera angle fellas, I just placed it somewhere near the TV and starting digging into my bowl of soup!

About the video : I know I was running into a lot of retarded things in the first round, then I found out st.forward wasn’t working online, got tight, and turned up it after a round and a half. If anyone has suggestions…not where I got hit, but if they would do something in neutral position…let me know, I’d like some insights.

I’ve started to see Ryu players using alot of his 2 hit j.mp, like the one from your video. Funnily enough I hadn’t seen it much at all before, so I wonder where they are all learning that stuff ^^. It’s beastly when it connects, but you weren’t having any of that nonsense; you pretty much have to jump into it for it to land anyway.

Didn’t realise cl.st.fp was good enough to beat Ryu’s cross-up. I generally wouldn’t risk something like that anyway, so, there was no chance I’d stumble across it accidentally.

Jeez, he liked to jump around alot too. That dash up ex.legs at the end was right on the money, I felt he deserved it for being such a pogo-stick.

Yeahhh, st.forward would beat just about anything (almost always even against crossup tatsu if they start it up in neutral, at the very least give you time to block the cross up). But it didn’t work once so I wasn’t risking trying it again.

He did play the match up better than I would expect online players, jumping around against Chun isn’t a bad idea for Ryu. He doesn’t have much other options other than to footsie, where Chun has the advantage if he can’t mind game with focus good enough.

I was using more of my online tactics in the first round and beginning of 2nd…but it seems like he knew what was up so I switched it up. I should have better judgment, he was half a bar (vs Chun at that) from winning lol.

I think Ryu players are using jump strong because of Daigo, except Daigo jumps IN with it…not just around. It’s still pretty good risk/reward for Ryu. He probably plays against a Chun that air-to-airs for anti air, so maybe that caused him to do that. He definitely knows not to waste time with fireballs though  .

Yea, I agree, he must have some good experience against Chun-Li players. And, during the time he did spend on the ground he was doing some good stuff. It was actually quite refreshing to see such an active Ryu player. Alot of the ones I run into online try jump-ins at first, but if I managed to negate them, then they go Ryu-turtle-fortress hypermode. Which I’m happy to let them do… makes it easier to bait them into fireballs ^^.

oh damn, i run into those active ryu a lot in g2 when its the first round match. i always get in trouble dealing with knock down crossover. man i need fast reaction like you mags, did u try the dash ultra twice? but u stopped it by just throwing out jabs? i always have a habit to just do it online. whiffing ultra seriously cost me a lot T_T.

I just didn’t press kicks because he didn’t throw a fireball. Then I went back to charging/kikoken to try again, but then I was convinced that he wasn’t going to fall for it and just started to go back to poking.

Matches in there with Nemo, about a good 5 or 6.

Nemo does a lot of safe pressuring, but I still don’t think he’s doing it right even though he’s the Grandmaster. I mean, look at how that Blanka tore him up. It seems like he just goes random as hell in Japanese tournaments since it’s 1 game. Maybe that’s what works there.

In the states though, especially MD/VA … we got a lot of good defensive players and they will spot shit like strong -> kikoken and strong -> hasan-shu easily. So I only incorporate bits of Nemo’s game into mine.

But I was spot on about his string though. He really does mix it up after low jab, close roundhouse. He goes to low short like I said when he wants to switch it up…but the new thing he did was throw. I like it.

edit: I made a mistake the first time I edited this in. It’s actually haneyama’s Chun, not nemo.

edit: Nemo vs a Bison player in here. Then we got a not so good Chun vs a not so good Balrog at the end.

SFIV seems much more epic announced by a hype Frenchman.

^ Yeah I want to make a petition for him to be the official announcer for SBO France Qualifiers.

I was playing in CE mode for a while today and my old buddy kenuran stopped my streaks. He plays a very good Cammy and he’s really good at other games and beats me.

He sets up a really nice hooligan frame trap (untechable, uncrouchable) and takes away damage from me pretty fast.

I think this is why I think Cammy has a really good match against Chun, is her punishment damage. Even without him doing multiple TK CS’, he still was doing the damage output Cammy has against Chun effectively.

I absolutely crumble against aggressive Cammy’s. You did really well the second round and it came right down to the wire. Fun match to watch. Also, the dash EX legs at 1:27 was perfect. Best example I’ve seen of it a match so far.

I’m curious to see a professional player pick up Cammy full time.

Edit: About the punishment potential of Cammy. I agree, it seems like she has a lot of different ways to start a counter chain. kenuran seemed to prefer the EX Cannon strike to (I think) Heavy Punch to Cannon Spike, which takes a sizable chunk out of Chun’s bar. She kinda plays like Chun in the sense that she fishes for the hit confirm of cr. forward(I think) to spiral arrow, like we fish for cr. light to EX legs.

- He owns me in round 1. Excuse my swearing. Then I start turtleing against him.
- This one is smarter. I had to turtle again and once I was able to get in, i did some good damage.
- I got some good surprise punches and kicks on him.

Comments welcome. I’m trying really hard to jump less, but I still use df. HK a lot because it seems to work well for me.

nice ken match, you really baited those DPs pretty good. i just have to say i cant believe you missed that stun combo lol. my go to combo for stun is lv 3 focus then tenshokaku or whatever… you had super meter at the time too, you could have did j.hk -> cl.hk -> hk legs -> super and messed his world up. solid play, but just dont miss another stun combo!! lol

o and a quick note on cammy, this could prob be in the S&M thread but im lazy, but ive had BIG problems with her ex hooligan for the longest. when she does it from across the screen neutral jump hpx2 is good stuff!

 1. You recognized that he travels around a lot by jumping and not FB zoning or dashing. By that fact you should have waited for the jump ins and countered with c. strong, c. short, EX legs. This AA eats up shotos (only counter to this is jump in is Fierce which he didn’t do once). Once you punished him with that a few times, he would’ve stopped jumping around. You had tons of opportunities to do this…

Here is a vid of me doing it on a Ryu at 0:40 (full combo) and single strike at 2:25. I didn’t do this the whole fight because he started jumping in with fierce which beats c. strong.

 1. To me, there are 2 types of Ryus: the ones that use c. RH and ones that don’t. You seeing that he used c. RH at least twice in the earlier rounds should have registered to you that he may use it again in close combat strings. Because of this, I would’ve prepped Ultra to counter a blocked c. RH when in close. At 3:07 he did exactly that and you could’ve counter Ultra’ed.

That’s all I got…

Good example. Yeah you’re right, I was thinking too highly of him. Jump in short from shotos beats anything Chun tries to go under with. When I first saw it, I guess I was thinking to just not risk getting hit by it. But like normal shotos, he jumped in with roundhouse the rest of the match which I should have low strong’d like you said.

No worries though, st.forward beats both offline :cybot:

I usually just walk away or under online, I get afraid to time things with Chun :pleased: .

Yeah, totally understandable. Online makes you do stupid things and makes you not do good things. She is a vile temptress…

man… i like your style
