I feel I could have done way better. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Why do most pro chuns use cr.lk cr.lk ex legs or cr.lk cr.lp cr.lk ex legs instead of cr.lk cr.lp cr.mk ex legs?
I assume the 2 cr.lk one is after crouch teching twice but I dunno about the other one.
I can’t speak for everyone, but for me those are the easiest to do.
The one leading to c. mk is probably preferable since extra bit of damage + stun, but it can be trickier in the heat of the moment. You definitely be needing that for the likes of Blanka, though
I’m about as far from a pro as you can get, but I’d say that its probably for the same reason I don’t do it, which is just that attempting it DRAMATICALLY increases the execution difficulty for almost no additional damage. Its the same reason you rarely see cr.lk -> ex legs and instead usually see cr.lk cr.lk -> ex legs, technically the former does a tiny bit more damage, but the latter makes hit confirming considerably easier. If we were all robots with perfect execution and reactions we’d always go for the optimal combo, but because we aren’t, we often settle for what we are capable of doing consistently.
Just for comparison sake I just did all 4 combos in training room. cr.lk cr.lk ex legs did 188. cr.lk ex legs did 190. cr.lk cr.lp cr.lk ex legs does 196, and cr.lk cr.lp link cr.mk ex legs did 220. So you’re definitely getting some extra damage. However, things get muddier if you want to combo that ex legs into ultra. I just went back and tested with W ultra and did an ultra 2 after each of those combos.
Cr.lk ex legs ultra 2 resulted in 365 total damage
cr.lk cr.lp link cr.mk ex legs ultra 2 resulted in 343 damage
cr.lk cr.lk ex legs ultra 2 resulted in 333 total damage
cr.lk cr.lp cr.lk ex legs ultra 2 resulted in 323 total damage
As you can see, because of damage scaling you actually end up with less damage then doing a single cr.lk into ex legs into ultra. Still a little better then double cr.lk and a whole 20 damage more then the suboptimal 3 hit into ex legs combo, but not a huge boost for the added difficulty, while a single cr.lk into ex legs into ultra is clearly the optimal combo if you have the reactions for it.
Also, as a chainable low attack, cr. lk also punishes people who buffer DP too early/mash tech while you’re still confirming. Doing about 4 of them in a row, what I see most of the time is a lot of people will start out blocking, but then get hit on the 3rd or 4th one because they aren’t patient and by then you can quickly confirm and launch them with EX Legs -> followup.
I go for the lights more often, not only because it’s easier to go into EX legs, but as a conditioning tool and to gauge how patient my opponent is.
I do use the cr. lk, cr. lp, cr. mk link to go into super a lot more though.
Old-ish but since I need all the help I can vs Ryu/Evil Ryu, some stuff I found while hanging around Cojiro’s Twitter and on associated YT channels. Recent but just before USF4 came out

Vivi pls, you’ve been playing so long. You should know better than to try and EX SBK a Seth who’s in prime position to shoryuken.
Especially THIS Seth.
set vs my friend’s Evil Ryu
I don’t know for the pros, but there an OS in cr.lk cr.lk ex legs.
You input “cr.lk, cr.hk cr.mk cr.lk”:
- if cr.lk hits, chun does cr.lk cr.lk and you already have 4 kicks inputs ready for the ex legs
- if cr.lk whiffs, chun does cr.lk (whiff) cr.hk (catches most of backdashes).
cr.lk cr.lk ex legs is maybe the least damage you can do. I only use it when i think the opponent will backdash my first cr.lk.
PS: i think nemo found that, during his sf4 chun times.
