Chun-li Video/Discussion Thread

Valmaster vs Luffy MM (post Euro tourney)

Valmaster is not a fan of vivi, he feels like among the best players of chun (vivi, cojiro, himself and others) vivi is last. He said that vivi can do combos like desk but nothing else in game, his gameplan and zoning are subpar

And I agree with that. He goes for (and lands) the huge loop combos, but fundamentals-wise, the other Japanese Chuns are better imo. I’m not fan of desk style fanciness, though obviously Chuns must learn even the first few reps to maximize their damage… not absolutely necessary though. Just look at Infiltration.

Vivi does a lot of things that I don’t quite agree with, like picking U2 vs shotos (as you can see on the previous page and vids).

Valmaster is best the Chun in the world period.
His fundamentals, maximizing damage on punishes and execution/reactions are fantastic.
He always has a clear game plan going into matches and you can tell when the plan shifts by his play style
He’s aggressive and has some great pressure tactics, but he’s cool enough to retreat and reevaluate and press again.
I do think he gets away with HSUs way too much. I can never do as many HSUs in a match as he gets away with.
But players don’t punish him for it and when he thinks he’ll be punished for it he’ll FADC.

I’ve been watching his vids for a little over a year now and I’ve learned so much it’s crazy.
Highly recommended any Chun user sit down and dissect a few matches.
One of the most potent (and yet obvious) things I gained from watching is Cr. Lp, Cr. Mk X EX LLegs or Kikoukens for block strings off of HSUs and in general combos.
Before this I always just went for Cr.Lk x EX LLegs, but I was lacking a few bits of damage/stun.
That is just one small example and granite I only play online, but my winning percentage went up 10% after I studied his play.

You’re alive :wow:

@Maximum_Spider
Since you asked about the Guy matchup a while back:

Here are some recent matches with my new friend. I’ve kinda forgotten how this goes, myself, so excuse the bone-headed mistakes :xeye:

yes-sir I’m kicking. Just long time dormant lurker.
No longer on XBL though, been playing on PC a ton. Awaiting Steams fixes on netcode before I purchase USF4 though.

Hey dudes, sorry I haven’t checked back in for a while. Been busy, you know how it gets? Hey, @4neqs, I’ll be checking out those videos you posted soon. I’ll probably quote you in the future with some feed-back. I actually do remember watching your Guile match-video and the Decapre ones that you posted. I was real busy at the time I watched it, however, and I didn’t really have anything worthwhile to say about them.

I played Dieminion again, recently, and he wiped me out in two back-to-back sets. I figure, he put me in the loser’s bracket so I moved on, after that. That cat has some mean Guile tech. I met another Guile player, recently, and he kept molesting me with light-resets into throws. Goddamn, it was giving me a brain-ache. I just sat in the corner and died.

I got some new videos to show you dudes. I like to mix my original music whilst playing because I figure, nobody else is doing that yet. I also figure, if you don’t like my guitar playing (heresy) you can always mute it and imagine the game-sounds yourself.

Here’s the first video. I’ll post more later after I’ve had chance to catch up with everybody else. Too much to watch all at once is kinda difficult for people, anyhow, I reckon. We’ve gotta eat sometime, right?

Edit: Here’s the Die-minion match.

Casuals vs my friend’s Ibuki (beginning until 8:00)

I’m just watching that Guy video you posted, 4neqs. Thanks for taking the time to make it and post it here! Jump-forward early air-to-air is doing wonders keeping him grounded, I’m definitely gonna start to try that if I meet more Guy’s that are jump happy. Seems like his elbow comes out too slow to do anything about it, he has to have a read on your jump to air-throw you. Which is where it’s a double edged weapon, I suppose, because if you start fishing jumps too obviously, he’s gonna slam-dunk ya. Seems like blocks on reaction are pretty important in this match-up, like Malvadisco was saying, as well as keeping yourself away from the corner. He was absolutely crippled when you managed to corner-trap him without any ex-metre for his reversal. You just abused jump-ins for days.

P.S. Tyrannasaurus stage is so goddamn loud, isn’t it?

Here’s a few short matches:

This is the Adon player I was talking about before. I played him in an Endless set after this and he wasted me with everything except Gouken for seven straight sets, my execution has been all over the place today, however. I’m having one of those days.

Here’s a fun Dhalsim match I had. I meet good Dhalsim players so rarely that I’m always excited when one turns up. I remember near the start of round 2 I told myself, “Alright, dude, he’s got Super. Don’t go crazy on his wake-up. He’s gonna be looking for set-ups.” Ehehe.

Lastly, this is the most recent Guy match-up I’ve played with somebody who wasn’t a novice with him. I gotta say, I struggled, but putting all the shit we talked about into practise has made the match-up much more doable for me now.

Edit: Goddamn, that red-focus at the end of that first Ibuki match. I was mad at that, and I wasn’t even playing.

That was totally my fault. I forgot he did that in non-Chun matches. I was like "well-played  " when that hit. Same when I tried to chip kill with U2 and he responds with a perfect Ibuki U2.

vs Guile, you def have to be a little more patient than that. Fewer hazanshus, more fireballs. You’re both chargies so don’t be afraid to engage in a projectile war if you can. Aside from flash kick, he has a few ways to punish overuse of hazanshu.

Someone else’s loss but I feel I should post this. Shows how important footsies and spacing and awareness are. The Chun should have closed out Round 2, but doesn’t seal the deal and it costs her the entire game.

Another Ibuki set, me vs the same player from my earlier post

I would have made the same mistake as D3monEX, in that situation, I feel. You get over-used to standing fierce sniping Cammy out of the air at outside ranges and forget that, if she jumps closer than that, she can come down ontop of your exposed hurtbox. Really digging that cat’s play-style.

I think Ibuki is a minor nightmare for Chun-Li. Completely renders Chun-Li’s reversal options inert. Makes you have to pay real good attention to blocking low when you are attempting to approach her at neutral, and she has an uncommon jump-arc, combined with her pixie status making her difficult to anti-air. If she has ex-meter, you can’t pressure her on wake-up. You have to be mindful for blocking high because she combos from her overhead and she has an air-throw, just in case you thought jumping at her a lot was a good idea.

So 4neqs, sorry if you’ve explained this else where and I just couldn’t find it, but why Ultra W in the Ibuki match up? Like for example, in the very first match, I believe you would have won the match with that ultra near the end if you were using ultra 1(maybe even if you were using ultra 2 since I believe an Ultra W scaled air juggle U1 does less then non-ultra W kikosho) but the scaling kept Ibuki alive and gave her another chance. I admit I’m not currently using ultra W in any match up as I just haven’t found that harsh damage scaling worth the versatility.

I’m not saying its a bad choice, obviously you wouldn’t have chosen it unless you thought it was a good choice, but since its something I don’t use, but could, I’d love to know the rational behind it to see if it sounds like something that could improve my success in this match up.

On an unrelated note… MY EYES!!! The Goggles Do NOTHING!!! Forget Ultra W, why would you choose that outfit!?

Just kidding. Well only kind of, I really don’t like that new “summer” outfit…

It’s casuals, and for when trying out new things/newer matchups I always try Double. I want to see what clicks. U2 is U2… with the juggle buff on U1 I do want to see if it’s viable/good for punishing against certain characters.

Back in AE/v2012 I used pure U2 for Ibuki, and I think I might stick to that.

But yeah, noted. I did UW against a Cody once and the lost damage may have cost me a game.

And yeah Alternate 4 sucks, I’ve only used it like twice. Alt 1 tho :3 <3

How you gonna lose to a Honda like that ._.

I fall into the same trap, sometimes. You feel so restrained in the Honda match-up, that you start trying to mix him up just for a little variety.

That double-dash forward->Ultra in the T.Hawk match-up was dope. Still glad that Vivi won though. Death to crouch-techers. \m/.
