Chun-li Video/Discussion Thread

On that note, casuals with a friend. Huge monitor though, so it was a tad laggy. He didn’t buy USF4 yet either so v2012… but I think he will have it this week.

“Vivi doesn’t seem comfortable playing the neutral game”

Oh man, so typical of Vivi. Owns the LL loops and high damage combos, but really needs to crack down on Chun’s mid-range game. Too in your face he is.

Long casuals from last month with friends. I’m Chun/Rose
Got bodied by my friend’s Bison in the end though… any help with that would be greatly appreciated. 1:18:00 onwards

@4neqs‌
I’m no expert so I’m not sure how useful my advice will be.
That being said…

You have to be REALLY careful with your fireballs because Bison has a couple ways to get around them and hurt you in the process (namely ultra 2 from any distance and ultra 1 and ex scissor from mid range). So you’ve gotta be careful when throwing fireballs from mid range. When you see he’s got ultra 2 stocked it’s best to just stop throwing them altogether.

Also you’ve got to check your desire to go air to air against Bison. Chun’s got beastly air priority but Bison has a few moves that flat out beat Chun in the air. Instead try anti airing him with your grounded anti airs. This way you’ll also have more time to see if he’s going for a stomp or a devil’s reverse.

Speaking of stomp and devil’s reverse, if you see him takeoff for one of these special moves simply hold back. If he goes for the stomp you should walk backwards just out of his range, it will whiff and you’ll have a brief window to hit him with sweep, lk~legs or any other quick attack/combo. If he goes for the reverse Chun should go into her block animation and from there you can either block it or dash away from it.

When you’re waking up watch out for Bison’s cross up psycho crusher. I believe if you time it right ex sbk will beat it, but I’m not sure about this. He recovers quickly from ex crusher and when spaced properly he can get out of your punish range with it, so you have to be on point when trying to punish this.

When you’ve got Bison knocked down pressure him! This is your biggest advantage in this matchup and you’ve gotta capitalize! You can time neutral jump hk to bait out and punish reversal scissor kick. If he’s the type to block low on wake up you can walk right up to him and tag him with the jump away hk overhead or lk hazanshu. Also crossing him up is great for pressuring him, just be careful with df. hk. If it’s not spaced just right many characters can just hold back and walk right under it, leaving Chun vulnerable to a counterattack. Instead try crossing him up with jumping lk. I find it’s harder to escape from. Also with Chun’s great walk speed you can mix up walk up throw, walk up hazanshu, walk up cr.lk~legs, walk up sweep, etc… to keep Bison guessing. Another trick that I like is cr.hp~lk hazanshu. It’s fast and as long as you don’t abuse it, it’s hard to react to. If the cr.hp is blocked there’s still a good chance of connecting with the hazanshu. If the cr.hp connects and you’re feeling bold you can go for the legs loop.
Just watch out for ex moves and wake up ultra and you should be able to pressure Bison’s wake up for free.

I feel like the key to this match is to take away Bison’s ability to pressure you with his pokes, and scissor kick. Since he’s so hard to zone I think best way to stop his pressure is by either staying far enough away that you can wait to capitalize on a whiffed stomp (but this is risky because he can just sit back and build meter with reverses, and if you give too much space and you keep backing up you run the risk of backing yourself into the corner which is a nightmare in this matchup) or by taking the fight to him. Use block strings such as cr.lk, cr.lp, cr.lk, st.mp~kikoken/hazanshu (careful with that one, if you get predictable with it you can be punished) mix in tick throws, ex legs and close range hazanshus to keep Bison off balance.

From mid range try not to throw fireballs. Instead try to catch him with pokes like st.mp, st.hp, sweep and cr.mp. If he jumps anti air him with whatever grounded anti air works best.

Once again, I’m no expert but these are things that help me out when facing Bison. Hope it’s useful!

Thanks thanks. No prob at all. I just need the reminders… I fight this guy on the regular but not as often as I want, so I may be forgetting pointers in the matchup. I use U2 but I will probably shift to UW or even U1 since he likes to Devil Reverse when he has nothing else to do from max range.

dru. I wonder if uber-turtling would reliably work against Blankas, though

The Best Bison in France/Europe (Gagapa) hate Chun Li. Look for Gagapa versus Valmaster. They know each other very well.

Something i noticed is valmaster try to bait scissor kick lk in moving toward gagapa but when he is close enough he moves back like that if gagapa do a scissor kick, they are risk that the move whiff.
Of course doing that means you don’t really want to approach him and instead you move back so if the bison player figure out that, he can start moving until you are cornered.
But as soon as bison loses his charge you can use your own “scissor kick” aka kikoken.
To deal with kikoken when he start chasing you, he can focus dash forward, block, jump forward or neutral jump.
At the good range, focus dash forward can be risky for him cause you can sweep him before he recover from the dash
Block do chip damage and move him backward
Jump forward is a good option but he has big jump so he has to be perfect with his jump because if he jump too late, whun li can punish him and if he jump too early she will not do the kikoken so she can punish him too
Neutral jump i don’t know.

About the stomps and devil reverse game, i feel bison use this when you give him too much room. And don’t forget those are charge move too.

PS : i hate this matchup too xD

PS2 : There is a range where scissor kick mk is safe because of the pushback

JeSterPower really putting that ex-kikoken juggle-state to work! I was a little gob-smacked, I’ve gotta admit. I think Chun-Li is pretty strong against Decapre, so long as you don’t jump at her when she has charge. I haven’t really seen anybody put her Ultra to work; made any real effective set-ups for it, yet. So, I dunno. Maybe once she gets figured out more, the tables will turn.

Turtling is always a solid strategy against Blanka, because he has so many different ways he can get punished by Chun-Li and, too much forward aggression will get you killed. I like to fuck with him on wake-up when he doesn’t have Ultra, though, because at worst I’m going to take a ball’s worth of damage, and I’d be cool with that. It’s not like I’ve just eaten some 450 damage FADC combo. Dru was doing some calculated turtling, anyhow. I respect that. Blanka vs Chun-Li is an epic-lamefest sometimes. I’ve had matches where I was sat on a life-lead and the Blanka was happy just to sit on the other side of the screen until I thought he’d gone to do something else, or something.

Not sure about Hugo using Ex-Meter on Clap. They nerfed his Super, I guess, so it doesn’t snatch round 2 for him every time, anymore, but still… That Lariat with its armour and Chun-Li’s difficult breaking armour. We’re not all LunatyCat’s that’s for sure. You’ve gotta think that’s a hard match for Hugo, because he moves to slow, and Chun-Li so quickly. If he tries to dash forward, she’s gonna fuck him up for that. If he tries to just walk? Yeah, I’ll see you on the other side of the screen next year, Hugo. Jumping? His hurtbox is way to big for the speed of Chun-Li’s normals. So, I figure, he’s gotta build meter and then play some armour shenanigans. Make her start trying to back-dash and look to punish those, because Hugo has good options for grabbing OTG states. Still, he’s a grappler. He’s fucked against Chun-Li.

damn I made Air salty. 24:29

With back medium kick:

You can just learn the ranges and then you dont really NEED to confirm it because they either waked forward or pressed something.

New Vivi

Max_Spider, thanks for posting and commenting. I really appreciate it. Sorry that I’m not able to comment on all your posts, but rest assured I do my best to watch most of them. I only post on those where I can think of something to say. I might revisit a few posts of yours and quote with my thoughts as they come to me.

Daigo vs some chick

So Daigo goes undefeated against the #1 Chun in Japanese arcades in that video I posted a few days ago, but then loses to a model(?) from that all girl team that Capcom put together a few months ago to promote USF4 lol. J/K, it doesn’t matter whether Daigo sandbagged or not(I don’t think he did, bad games happen) because she’s a legitimately good player. The only one of the 3 who has a really good grasp on the game while the other 2 are still beginner level players.

Great match and a great channel for Chun you should sub to the guy
