Chun-li Video/Discussion Thread

I saw that video, actually, that OneHandedTerror made. I was hanging around this forum when he was a regular here and we passed technology to each other. Him and Azrael were obsessed with the Balrog match-up, because… even after they crippled Sagat, this fuckers 2frame jab would eat Chun.Li alive. That video he made taught me a few things, but it got me killed quite a bit, as well. I kept trying to follow his advice, about the yellow-zone, using st.mp and cr.mp to re-establish space, but Boxer players must have already cottoned on to this, because they are looking for pokes to jump on top of, anyhow. The way I play the match is that, I control his use of his ex-specials, by following fireballs with legs. If he ex-punches, he dashes into your legs and you can link into cr.lk->ex.legs. Mostly, he’s gonna try and jump over fireballs, if he is good. If he is real good, all he will do is put his stick into the forward position and watch you corner yourself. You can’t play full keep-away, against Boxer, and hope to win. It doesn’t work. I know some of you have like, sick reactions where you throw a guy out of dash punch, I haven’t been able to do that.

One thing in Chun’s advantage though, is that jumping-forward.hk beats out headbutt so bad. But then, Boxer has too much health, anyhow. You can’t peace him out fast enough, like, say, Viper could.

I’m gonna try running away from the next Bison I meet. Thanks for the advice!

Yeah! Dash forward is definitely a pro-level tool. Dash forward->ex.legs is sick, when you see a guy pull that off.

Needs more divekicks. This goes for Yuns, Rufuses and Seths that go up vs Chun-Li too. I don’t think anything else frustrates her more except maybe Viper vortex.

If you hesitate in dking and just lay back or hold back (like the Chun kind of wants you too), then you lost.

Hehe ragepause @4neqs I’ve only watched the first video, so far, because I’ve gotta go and make my break-fast and do some exercise, but both of you are wayyy better than I am. The links, do you ever drops links?

I still drop jab jab fierce sometimes and can’t consistently do HSU -> Super yet

shhhhh. :3

Fuck dude, if you could hasan-shu->super then you should just get your pick of a woman to go down on you on the spot.

Lol, goddamn, I can’t believe that Kikoshou actually worked on the second video!

This Chun-Li is playing this match-up completely wrong. Too many close range fireballs. Not enough back-dashing. And, stand on the ground and use fierce punch, or, alternatively, standing.mp when you want him to stop using his rush punch. I’m not sure I would do much better against the nr.3 Yun, but you’ve gotta think that Chun can do a little better than that.

Also, Chun-Li’s middle punch kikkoken has the least recovery of any of her fireball options. If you want to use any and your opponent is not full screen, use mp.

In that Photon vs Louie match, I think you did better. Kinda looks like how I like to play against Yun. They removed the invincibility from his non-ex.dp, right? So, if he dumps his bars, don’t let him get a free wake-up. Go to town with your mix-up. Otherwise, you don’t have to be full screen. Mostly you want to play at the maximum range of fierce punch and control him from there. If you hit a quick focus, which isn’t enough to crumple, back-dash outta there. Give yourself some breathing room. You’ve gotta make him earn every jump-in, because once he puts you in block-stun, you ain’t going anywhere for a while.

Pssh, who’s this Valmaster scrub? He’s only got 3000 BP! Gay. (Ehe)

I met somebody under the name of Gooteks but I got green bars with him, so I guess this is some different guy. Plays kinda like him, if you squint real hard.

Didn’t even know I could punish ex.ball like this. Total fluke.

I’ve played this guy a few times, so he ain’t a scrub or anything, but why didn’t he Ultra my Ultra? Edit: Oh wait, I think he jumped a little before.

Edit: Damn dude, nice headstomp against elfeic in the end of that first round. Sheeet, fireball to corner headstomps? Gross man. Sehr Grosse. Okay… what the fuck happened at the end of that round? I think I’m gonna repress that memory.

Can’t believe the Ken fell for the old, cr.fierce-punch ultra. I should start doing that again. Thanks for posting those videos, man!

Yeah the Yun in the shorter vid was playing it wrong too, by not being agressive enough imo. Chun should never have it that easy in this matchup.

Yun may have lost a few things/or got toned down, but ultimately he’s stronger in USF4 because of red focus to Ultra. No need to waste full meter on Genei Jin unless it’s a guaranteed kill.

That’s true. I was never that scared of Genei Jin, in this game, anyhow, because of scaling. You pretty much have to hit three combos to peace a guy out, anyhow. I find combos like that are more frustrating for a charge character, than anything, because of the suspense you get holding onto your charge whilst somebody is wailing away on you. I mean, unless you can dizzy reset them, with a focus attack timed for their stun recovery. That’s kinda gay, right? That you have recovery frames for coming out of dizzy so you can’t even backdash a level 3 focus. Basically, you get dizzied in this game, and you’re forced to eat two full damage combos for the price of one. I don’t really like that. I think it excessively favours high stun, high damage characters. I don’t find it a coincidence that characters like Cammy have been strong in this game, who can chain together a whole lot of fierce punches, and do a lot of damage in a short space of time, if you let them. Same deal with Seth, which is why he’s so neutered now. They took away so much of his stun potential that he actually has to play the risk-reward game that everybody else is playing.

Oh god, did you see Valmaster poke that ultra activation for the timer scam at 7:20 minutes of that video? Damn, man. This Valmaster cat is so tricky, sometimes. I think Chun-Li has a slight edge against E.Ryu and Oni, anyhow, because they don’t have a solid neutral game like other shotos have. But still, a good Evul Ryu is a tough thing to handle. I wouldn’t get cocky about it or anything.

Jesus, Tenshokyaku->fadc->corner-ultra? This dude is on another level. Every video I watch and I’m impressed by something. You gotta think, eventually, he’s gonna run outta stuff to show you, right? But nah, he always surprises you, somehow. I remember watching him play that match against Ryan Hart and it was the quintessential Chun-Li tech for taking apart Sagat. I wasn’t surprised he won in the least.

Oh! I’m gonna purposely Hasan.shu into a focus sometime just so I can FADC->Backdash outta it. That’s sick.

For me, it’s not so much about Genei Jin per se, but more on how easily he can gain meter in the SF4 games. It’s almost a guarantee he’ll land it in a match. And now with RF he doesn’t even need full meter anymore.

Valmaster is the best in Europe (after Luffy) for a reason.
That’s the shortcomings of characters like Chun-Li and Ryu in SF4… they’re just too honest. But that’s what they say… what I say when you “have to work for your wins.” Such characters can’t be put on autopilot so to speak, and help you improve your overall game. It can be hard, but it’s possible and it can be rewarding. I have not really changed mains since vanilla :3

I realized I might have been looking at the wrong Yun vid. Fentamu/Fenrir is actually pretty good. He’s a Japanese online Yun that regularly beats Xian and other high-profile players on XBL lol

But yeah the Chun he faced was playing it wrong.

Concept Chun Li from a very early internal Build of USF4

^ That’s a troll video somebody made with a PC-mod, right?

It’s kinda cool, regardless.

Actually that Chun-Li is based on a version that’s located in one of the folders of the actual game that’s titled “Concept”. Probably some internal rebalance testing by Capcom.

They would have broken Chun-Li so bad if they made cl.st.hk a launcher. That button already blows up crouch teching and Chun-Li, she’s strong against grapplers as it is. They would have just made her strong match-ups even harder for the opponent to win. I can’t believe they were seriously considering that. I figure it’s a practical joke of some kind.

Edit: Don’t wanna de-rail the thread too badly so here’s a few commentaries I made today. Any tips you can give me, I always have my ears open.
