Chun-li Video/Discussion Thread

I just don’t like mirrors because I often make the mistake of thinking of what I would do in their situation instead of predicting/reacting to what they are doing.

No nuki… Bad nuki! Get in your kennel.

I guess on the topic of mirrors I was playing ranked earlier and this Chun player kept challenging me so I uploaded all our matches. The first 3 matches were painful but then I think I sorta got it around 7:30 in. I have a hard time fighting against these kinds of players… usually takes me a while before I figure out how to beat them. That’s something I need to fix for tournaments and whatnot. I would’ve been eliminated by this person in a tournie

Just don’t expect nice high level play here. I’m still trying to learn -_- I think in August when I move into my new apartment I want to invest in some equipment so I can either record matches better or stream games maybe. Though if USF4 gets ported to PS4 I don’t need to worry about that.

My Chun is so boring to watch xD I think I play pretty lame.

y u no block sweep :shake:

anti-sweep, anti-focus attack, bigger punishes and more patience is what I can say

lol that last second blow-through Kikosho

I dunno I kept getting taken by surprise with those sweeps. I don’t think he did many focus attacks on me O_o I was the one focus-attack spamming on him since he kept doing hazanshus. I used to go for leg loops when I had my stick and was somewhat successful at pulling them off but I can’t do that on pad… so now my punishes are kinda weak

But yeah… his Kikosho’s took me by surprise a few times. Had to pound it into my head that he WILL randomly super me -_-

He got away with a quite a few.

It’s my problem too. Poke heavy character with no instant go-to breakers :shake:
You can learn to c. hp/j. hp/jab through FA’s in time though

also, if you are going for a jump in when you are desperate and down (which isn’t advised but everyone does it ;))

make sue you charge as soon as you leave the ground, and be ready to ultra 1 if that second fierce actually hits.

people on your level and indeed much higher will usually get caught by the double punch, so be prepared to punish them to the fullest exetent if you see that second hit glow orangy red

otherwise its just about reacting and reading as fast as you possible can. when I was building up my general level of play I would choose best of five rounds, for the exact reason that I knew as a Chun Li player I was going to win by being patient and reacting and then punishing.

So the longer I had against one opponent the easier it would get. One quick example i picked up after ten seconds was the fact your opponent would empty jump hazanshu nearly every time he jumped from far away. I would have began to bait it, stayed 3/4 screen, and focus attacked on his landing every time (3/4 screen would mean he wouldn’t reach with his jump attacks if he used any, but would get crumpled by a focus attack if he hazanshus on landing.)

He continues to do this throughout the whole set, its something he relies on for offense, so if you use it against him, he becomes a MUCH worse player. Knowing these things compared to putting them into practice is difficult, and takes time, thats why i recommend 3 out of 5 rounds, much better for a defensive zoner like chun li, as you need to read and react to win. you will rely less on offensive tricks and mix-ups and more on fundamentals.

Thanks! Yeah I picked up on his empty jump hazanshus later in the set. I’ll also try to incorporate that U1 strategy too then.

I know I have a specific type of player who just catches me off guard every time and those are the “just do it” players. Random ultras? Gets me every time. Shoryuken into shoryuken into shoryuken? Yup. That’s partially why I have a really hard time with Balrog players. Feels like a lot of them are like “I’ll just do it. I’m willing to accept the health loss from the punish of a low damage character like Chun-Li.” I suppose I could sum it up as “high risk high reward” players.

I really am loving his very balanced Chun game. I kinda love his fireball FADC use, as well. I think the thing that most sticks out for me is that he is not very conservative with meter and takes advantage that it is very difficult to whiff punish chun or jump her st. strong poke. He’s so assertive and wastes so little time wiggling around.

Super is good, but Chun builds meter relatively well, so it’s not really an issue. He is also safe and selective when it comes to using HSU, and is at just the right distance when he uses far s. mp.

Less mash EX leg + better mastery of her anti airs + landing stomps consistently = he will be a beast with Chun

Haha… Blocked EX Legs to EX Legs is too good. I’ve gotten some really stupid damage from that recently.

im using dash ex legs more now, is very weird… most ppl dont expect that when holding focus lol

Do you mean you threaten with focus and then dash out of it and do EX Legs or catching the opponent doing focus by doing dash up EX Legs?

both lol

Valmaster at 8:55 and 1:24:00

Man… Chun just got dumped on. Valmaster made me feel great about my set tonight and my abilities in general. The fadc every b+mk combo? That’s not hard to confirm. Double-u tee eff, mate? His reactions were way off compared to that gen. Also, not sure if valmaster was the one with hair in his face, but I would have a hard time playing too if my bangs covered one of my eyes… Sick gen though.

You really want to tell me that you didn`t recognize Xian, the best Gen in the World? Who btw. won Evo 2013 with that hair in his face.

So, no, Valmaster is not the one with the hair in his face.
And if you don`t have experience vs a Gen on Xian-level, you will lose your games looking like an absolute beginner.

Plus Xian is from Singapore, where they have a handful of good Chuns and two high tier ones (Rodney and Tommy). Plus, this is still v2012, as compared the the earlier Valmaster vs Xian set which was a test drive for Ultra aready.
