oops I forgot my 3rd match I switched to Ryu lol. My fault peoples.
LOL TOLD YOU! that match is even. a lil while ago you were saying that chun beats rog hands down… not really.
against a rog that is as aggressive like this one, FOREGO saving to super… that shit dont work versus rogs that are hyper aggressive, especially ones that use rogs ex moves as much as that one does.
you need to use more ex SBK, also STOP wasting your meter on cl st.HK xx exlegs on crumple unless you plan on doing another ex legs to finish or are going to juggle to ultra. a better combo is crumple >cr.hp xx mk sbk or crumple > lvl 1 fa> stomp x3 i dont think either do quite as much damage as cl st hk xx ex legs but they do save you VALUABLE meter for ex sbk.
basically the way i see this game being played ESPECIALLY if your using chun
is kind of like an rts game, ie its all about your “build”… in this instance saving to super like chun does versus turtle rogs can be considered like teching: your foregoing a good early game to hopefully get a VERY powerful and much quicker endgame.
the problem with teching is rushing, when you tech your left vulnerable for the first part of the game, in this instance chun is trying to save to super while foregoing her best defensive option of ex sbk, so jumping in alot and using lots of armor moves early is going to give rog the edge in the match if chun doesnt adjust.
it was obvious that you werent saving to super but it was also obvious you were trying to stay from ex sbk unless you really needed it… i say that when confronted bya really aggressive player that likes to jump in alot, LET HIM JUMP INTO YOUR EX SBK AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE… the damage that you get from that AA is easily its own reward plus the fact that it sends rog all the way across the screen is an added bonus. the only thing that you gotta do is try and make sure that you build atleast a half a meter between ex sbk’s so that they are always ready to go… in many respects this matchup is like the blanka one.
also if i were you i would use more cr.hk in neutral games… it allows you to better position yourself and it can REALLY scare balrogs badly cause they DONT like being knocked down, so they will start to predictably jump over it or fa it both of which chun has damaging answers for.
but yeah in a nutshell you cant let him jump in on you as much as you did… do yourself a favor and let ex sbk help you out with that
lol that rog reminds me of combofiends… refreshing to see one that attcks even if “attacking” consists of “jumping in alot” lol
-edit all that commentary was based on your first vid… i just watched your second vid and you started out using ex sbk right off the bat… then later in that match it became quite obvious that you missed having your super so you decided to start saving your meter and that got you killed.

EX SBK is nice, gives space, but I like EX legs over that.
I missed my fierce, plain and simple. When I did it, it worked, when I wasn’t looking for it, I got fucked up and reminded that I need to be more solid.
Chun has a good match against this guy, at the very least 5.5-4.5 . That was just ** BAD PLAYING BY ME, 100% **. That doesn’t display what Chun needs to do against Rog, that displays how she gets fucked up for not being played properly.
Plus, Chun isn’t going to damage Rog without EX legs. Not even with her super, it’s just good for giving her a comfortable edge in closer situations.
I still have no idea how I miss a 1 button anti air, I just wasn’t on point today.
I appreciate your look on it, but I posted the video for others to learn from my mistakes, I know exactly what I missed and how to overcome it.
cool
Nice matches, and somewhat of a consolation that I’m not the only one getting hit by that overhead. I’ve been trying to program myself to try to fuzzy block it but in the end I usually just end up guessing. Low rush isn’t as popular.
Also, this is something I’ve been wondering about. When you had him cornered at some point you went for the crossup. At the end of a round that even got you thrown cus it randomly whiffed which is something I’ve had happen many times. I think relying o the corner wall to make a crossup work isn’t so good for chun’s j.lk as it is for something like Ryu’s j.mk. Anyway, from a basic zoning standpoint wouldn’t it be better to keep him in there? Maybe throw out a kikoken for him to wake up into baiting headbutts or whatever it is you do to a cornered Rog.
about the overhead:
if he ex’s it it’s easy to react block. if he uses the lk version of it that is HARD for me at least to react block (ex is slowest lk is fastest)

I’ll admit his setups were sneaky with that. I used to look for it all the time, in block strings and after I anti air with fierce he would EX and try and hit me with it but I’d always throw it 100%.
Right now though, without practice against it…it definitely raped me. There’s just too much Chun has to look for to be watching for the overhead too, but I’m trying to make things in my mind trigger an input on reaction from now. So when I see him flash I’m trying to get into the habit of waiting and throwing, when he leaves the ground and is in the air I wanna press fierce…etc.
It’s not easy at all but it’s still early and the more we can make things happen on reaction the better Chun will be, since she is a reaction character. That’s why she takes 100% skill and I enjoy watching Chun consistently pulling wins when they do. So far, Japan has been the only proof for me and that’s why I continue the play the character.
Anyways yeah back on topic to your post. I should have pressured with kikoken like you said. That crossup short is horrendous against Rog’s hitbox. I got into the habit of using it when I need to come back due to playing characters that it works on…like Sagat, shotos etc.
It’s really really funny how in some areas, I used to do better when I was less experienced and my previous instincts were correct over my newer ones. But I have to balance it out now…which is why Chun isn’t easy to win with.
In that situation, the odds of winning are still really low…after a kikoken if he decides to just block, it’s really hard to string him and gain damage off of him. More than likely it was over for me at that point, but maybe Azrael can answer what are the most effective ways to come back from that.
Oh and I really hate that Rog low jab now. Every time I focused and dashed up (even the games that I didn’t record) I would get hit and eat a huge combo for no reason :lame: . It’s really hard to pressure Rog effectively, especially punishing his jab on whiff…that’s another mission.

For anyone having Fuerte problems, this is the video to watch. Fuerte doesn’t even land 3 hits. Chun escapes a knockdown (showing how back dash is so gdlk) . It’s what I’ve been trying to say the whole time…and this being done vs probably the best El Fuerte player just proves that Chun has tons of options in this match.
edit: I took another look at the name and it reads “haneyama.” He hasn’t been around since the game came out, and he was one of the first top Chun players. Glad to see he’s back, he’s playing REALLY sharp.
edit two: Just came across another video of the same players. http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm6810304 6:45 they meet again, and Fuerte plays a lot better but still gets the 2-0 from Chun. Azrael was on point with his dash EX legs tip, and it’s definitely something to use against Fuerte.
edit three: http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm6810357 this would be the 3rd and the finals are included at 8:07. Much respect for doing so good with Chun, I won’t spoil anything for now. Also, good shit to Azrael’s tips, I see a lot of them in the video.
Actually if you check the focus attack post I made http://forums.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=187042 it seems that the framedata has been updated so now instead of just being focus attackable by a small part of the cast it’s possible for everyone except 2. I still concider it a valid tactic though because from my own experince it seems to work since it’s very difficult to react as fast as you have to to release your focus as fast as possible.
Very informative post. I wanted to say that it wasn’t susceptible to focus attacks, but I didn’t have the frame data knowledge to back me up on that. I seemed to have a vague memory of being hit by a low level focus attack against my s.mp. At the time I wasn’t sure what had happened, but it left me a little suspicious of the entire thing overall -.-. Thanks for clearing that up for me.
Also, glad to see some more Balrog video’s. That matchup always gives me a headache, to the point where I down-right avoid it even in 3bar games which usually I’ll gladly play. I didn’t realise throws were a good counter to his ex-punches, I’ve got to practise that!
Hm. Seems nico wants me to pay to view those videos
I’d register if I knew how to read JPN… shucks, I wanted to see those matchups.
You don’t need to pay. You just need an account, which is free.
I love that site!!
HAZAN/ULTRA combo. Here is a video i did awhile back. it was my first 1. u can land it on aggresive fighters. if your timing is sound. easy set up is to throw them first. ive landed it a few times, but missed it more. but my timing is tight cuz ive practiced it so much.
Hello! Sorry Quick Question. Didnt know where else to post. The last post that MagMan posted: 3rd link video with Chun Vs Blanka: they play this remix verison of Chun Li’s theme with some japanese lyrics. Does anyone know what song that is and where I can get it? It is just so damn good.
On another note, I would like to thank everyone who contributes to this fourm as your post have helped my game.
its sakura’s theme song remixed for sf4. its actually on the soundtrack cd, i looked for it after hearing it. realizing it was on the soundtrack cd that came with the collector edition.
Am a big fan on Nakano TRF tournaments. Watched them all from the first test videos till the last one (20th of april). Good Chun-Li players in there aswell, although I think there are like 4 of them (2 Master class) in there that appears often on their tournament. That blanka player is just sick. Although he knows alot about Chun-Li since he also has a Master Chun-Li Card iirc.
About Fuerte’s vid, as Magman stated he is probably one of the best if not the craziest Fuerte Player around in Nakano TRF. So you pretty much can see everything Fuerte can do against you.
thank you bunta for the speedy reply. ill look for it in my collectors edition.
yeah, fuerte can be deadly. esp. when his ultra takes about half of chun’s life.
okay so i managed to get a camera and record a few matches. sorry for the shitty angle. Anyways, i been having major issue with ryu or ken match up, now i dont think i am any good at all :(. i can see a lot of flaws and i really should stop jumping but it happens when i get too aggressive. sometimes u may see me do low shorts and then a standing shorts, i meant to do a hanzu but as usual the lag doesnt let me input them. :looney: any advice would help!
