Chun-li Video/Discussion Thread

The problem is that I don’t feel safe enough to commit to any major blockstrings, I always expect some nasty stuff when I try it.

feeling it

what is there to review here, really?

Good things to point out was your Hosenka useage and good concentration when being pressured by Vega.
I noticed in this Vega fight as well as Ryu’s you were using FAs a little more than the prior vids, but you need to understand its reach and be sure to dash back or forward so you don’t leave yourself completely vulernable to attack.

Your main offensive tools seem to be throws and Cr. Hk (which is way bad on block and not something to throw out a lot)
It is also important to know your safe jumps/option selects off throws and mixup/setups off hard knockdowns so you can capitalize more efficently on what your opponent is giving you.
If you don’t know any safe jumps yet, I strongly advise looking them up.
In the meantime as you are throwing be charging a kikouken and fire it at them on your opponents wake up.
This can do a few things:
For one is gives the opponent something to contend with - a projectile
They may stand and block which you can dash in and use Cr.Hk maybe even throw if the spacing is right.
They may FADC back, which pushes them in the corner.
They may get hit like an idiot
Chun Li is very strategic; everything done by her needs to be done with a purpose so be thinking 2-3 steps ahead but be ready to adapt at a moments notice.

But by my logic – if you are confident enough to walk up and throw you are confident enough to pressure with other tactics and use blockstrings if required.
There is no parry in SSF4 so your opponent can’t do anything about a block string as they are in hit stun, even if they are tech mashing and you miss time a button they’ll likely get counter hit.
Once you lose your fear of ‘what might happen’ you can start to incorporate mixups within those pressure tactics and make your opponenet suffer and make bad decisions.
take these for example:

Cr. Lp - Throw
Cr. Lp, Cl.St.Hk xx Lk HSU
Cr. Lp, Cl.St.Hk xx Hk LLegs - if blocking add St. Mp xx Kikouken a the end to fish for counter hits and apply more pressure in general

Just three minor options right here that’ll make the opponent have to tech, if you’ve been teched then do HSU for overhead if they are blocking low.
Use Hk LLegs for good push back and a nice counter hit if they try to tech for good damage and massive stun all the while building awesome meter.
All in all learn Chun’s BnB combos focusing on her core game, you miss too many opportunities to land EX Legs combos or if you don’t have meter for EX, get C.Lp, C.Lp, St.lp, St. Hp combo down pat
It’ll vary from character to character on how many Cr.Lps or St. Lps you get so practice on Ryu/Ken then on Geif/Rufus to see the difference
You’ll get 4 to 6 hits depending on the character all meter free (while building meter of course) with decent damage and stun

That was an interesting fight
I always liked going against a good Fei Long player. Always wanted to learn Fei too but never did-- dunno why, he lacks boobs I guess…lol!
I must say though I’m totally jealous of both players’ reaction speeds.
Good stuff!

Left you a message on one of your YT videos. Let’s see where you want to go from there.

Mirror matches can really be annoying. Her sweep is so strong when used properly.

Yeah, I will probably need a lot of advice.

case in point.

At least I anti-aired some.

Just a few things:
Mirror matches are garbage – why would I fight Chun Li, why would Chun Li fight me? Imposter Chun’s dipping in the DOA Kasumi Cloning Kool-Aid.
now that I got that poor attempt of humor out of the way:

Hold your ground man!!
Drill this into your head: "I’m in Control"
No matter how bad the fight goes south, if you stay in control of your emotions, keep your wits. You can win, because you are in control.

You started the fight pushing yourself in the corner, he didn’t do it. You did, because you didn’t hold your ground.
Make a new goal for yourself right now! As soon as the round starts consider these options:

 1. throw kikouken
 2. Start up an FA and dash forward; why? See if they throw a fire ball or if the stick out a limb (Sim or Seth) Absorb and get up in their mug
 3. throw out St. Hk
 4. DO NOTHING! just stand or hold down back, see what they do.

Wake up LK HSU is a smart reversal on people crouch attacking and would have no doubt caught this Chun player many times.
Be frosty and try to FA his HSUs and punish with your best BnB

Round 2:
Very solid Anti air with St. Mk
@ 1:13 you threw - Safe jumping would have negated his EX SBK
Also try this to bait EX SBK (because I totally saw it coming)- dash in and just as they wake up Neutral jump and come down with Hk - follow with your best BnB
@1:22 He really made a stupid move, react to this take the advantage, punishing with raw damage Kikosho would have been great.
You also had a solid chance to make a comeback. Maybe lag was an issue but get your execution down for C. lk xx Ex LLegs - U2
Looks like you have been thinking throw per your inputs and he was mashing LLegs like a bitch
So again make sure you captilize on your hit confirms!

Chun-Li is one of the better mirrors out there, whoever is smarter and has the better footsies and fundamentals tends to win. It’s quite pure.

Now, if we’re talking of terrible mirrors…

viper mirrors

How do I deal with Ryu pressure? Shit’s crazy.

That’s why I don’t like it. Because I don’t have those yet.

I usually end up in the corner because I can’t deal with pressure very good.

I just think “there’s no way he is going to do something that stupid.” and then he does something stupid anyway.

Probably because I like throws too much.

Ryu Pressure? blah…now Ibuki pressure that is scary shit.
Honestly too broad of a question to answer. Best to consult the thigh and life section for character match up breakdowns.
Biggest key when dealing with any character’s pressure is analyze how they are pressuring, what are the tactics they choose to use?
Do they use patterns? can you FA? can you back dash, can you dash forward!? is EX SBK safe? Can my Super or Ultra punish this move? etc., etc.,

As far as, "There’s no way he going to do something that stupid"
ALWAYS expect a reversal mash or panic situation.
That is why you test your opponent right off the bat. When you don’t back down and especially when you take a step forward without fear, you’ll be surprised how quickly you can find out what ‘type’ of player you have facing.

Hell even high level play you’ll see 'OMG! Legit tactic B.S"
See video above @ 5:53 Chun attacks with Cr. Hp xx LLegs linked into sweep on a stunned Fei player
The Chun player missed his link into Cr. Hk and ate a Mashed out, paniced piece of shit Ultra from Fei Long.
Personally The Chun player had this locked, going into Ex LLegs - U2 would have finished the fight for sure
So in that essence it is the fault of the Chun player not captilizing efficently
But it just goes to show you when a player’s back is against the wall they’ll do 'dumb shit’
Pick and choose by testing your opponent if you eat 2 wake up DPs
I’ll bet $100 they’ll do it a 3rd time, so punish it!
Really you should never eat one right off the bat, you need to test them and see how willing they are throw it out.
the lower the health the more desperate one will become, especially with retarted come back mechanics fighting games love to emphasis these days.
Gives scrubs the chance for “OMG! Legit Tactic! I PWNED YOU!”

Alrighty. Sent you two pm’s on Youtube.

do you have some vids to watch?

His account is here www.youtube.com/sotodashi

I pm’d him over there, I guess commenting on YT is ok to him too.

Sorry, haven’t played for a while, just got beasted on by a Zang though.

Analyze your replay.
See how he got in on you and think about how you could have kept him out better
If you are at a loss on seeing mistakes feel free to post it and we can help out.
