Thanks again. Actually I do want to go to the lab to test Cody’s tornadoes, I want to be able to tell the difference between the versions so I can still pick Ultra 1. lol
A couple against my friend who’s learning Viper. Def another matchup that I need to be more comfortable with, matchup stats and figures be damned.

I have this really bad habit of doing high recovery pokes or throw attempts at the worst times. I get Ultra’d that way. >_<
I know I’ve handled other Vipers better than this.
to all
I would also like some help and commentary on the shoto and Rufus matches I posted earlier in thread if that is possible. Thank you very much.
OK mate if i may, i watched those matches and something that i noticed is you trying to play at the same rufus rhythm, at least for me thats something risky, you dont need to jump towards him specially when he has ultra stocked (actually you ended up eating j.hk for this), if anything neutral jump hk is your best friend against happy jump rufus, your second best friends are jump back hk/mk/mp but i dont like to do this too much tho, positioning is key in this MU imo. I remembered saying to you the use of blockstrings, either you are not practicing those or these videos are just to old… use them. About you using df.hk i do use it, but if i got punished by it i just dont use it, your mate wasnt punishing or backdashing/focusing it so that was “ok”, your spacing with df.hk in the other hand is not very on point tbh, again more practice.
Something to think about is U1 in this match up, personally since df.lk doesnt stop divekicks no more (damn you capcom) to me u1 is more valuable, cr.hp punish, mesiah focus backdash punish, full juggle, and specially because im a Senretsukyaku fag i dont like to waste meter on EX legs “just because they are good, fast and unblockeables” with super you have access to EX galactic tornado punish on block, sweep, etc.
Other random note, as many of you may know rufus st.lk, st.hp XX galactic is a frame trap, but if rufus use too much st.lks the final st.hp xx galactic isnt TRUE blockstring, so you can hosenka punish it between the st.hp and the galactic… like i said hosenka is way more valuable than kikosho imo
I hope this helps you, maybe you know this so yeah… in any case keep practicing and dont give up
Tournament jitters and lack of warmup aside, I thought I did okay.
I overused crouch tech early on (as UltraDavid pointed out) but didn’t do it as much later in the match. I missed a lot of links, partially out of nerves and partially because I hadn’t warmed up on 360 (I play on arcade and PS3, which have slightly different timing).
I am upset about guessing wrong against the rose FADC (I stood up thinking he was going to overhead). I’m also upset about getting hit by his j.LP. That shit stays out FOREVER now. I knew that about the changes but I didn’t realize the extent to which it would affect me. Also, at one point I dash in and eat a focus crumple. That was a throw. The one point where I whiff df+HK on his wakeup and end up with df+LK? That’s a throw. When he Ultra’d me through my Kikoken, I FADC’d too late.
Anything aside from execution errors? Spacing, zoning is where I’m most concerned.
Backed. There are some videos where I’m playing…someone, I don’t remember who, but I do an Ultra almost as soon as I get it, and my opponent says, “Yeah, I wouldn’t do that if I were you. It’s not gonna do a lot of damage there.” I responded by saying, “I do it there because I might not get another chance.”
To each his own, but unless the Cody that you’re playing is a dummy, he/she will likely not throw anything other than a :lp: tornado if he/she sees that you’re blocking. Further, most Codys won’t even do a :lp: tornado if you’re blocking. Picking Ultra 1 for this one specific punish that most smart players won’t open themselves up for seems like a bit of a risk IMO, but like I said…to each his own =)
I don’t know if you noticed but the main problem is you let Dudley get close to you too easily. The primary way he did it was jumping, but after that it was walk up focus/sometimes short. You have to anti-air him in this matchup, the fact that Dudley is jumping at you means he doesn’t know how to use his normals to creep closer. The same is true to a lesser degree with focus. As Malv said, crouch strong goes under, but there are other anti-airs depending on the distance. Focus bait any fierce or towards fierces you get as well, but you crumpled him a good few times.
Besides AA, you needed to challenge his walkups with stand strong, this is really frustrating to Dudley. Swedish firecracker would have helped you a lot too. You can zone Dudley to a degree with your fireballs unlike a lot of characters cause Chun’s fireball moves slowly, but you have to make sure he’s behind mid range. In which case if he tries to duck through you can get the opportunity to sweep/stand fierce/whatever as a whiff punish and you can anti-air jump ins. MGB is not always punishable but its never safe on block, so you can use 3 frame normals to retake the initiative if he does that especially if he has no meter to EX you. Also, didn’t see nearly enough throwing here, especially throwing him out of focus or tick throws.
I don’t know if he was OSing you at all, but you should have backsashed on wakeup more to make him have to at least force his hand and make him deal with it as an option when getting a knock down. Also, Dudley has to give up combos and pressure just to make you stop in most cases. (with meter he can do some interesting things with backdashes on wakeup).
I’m not the best Dud or Chun by far but from playing this match-up from both sides, that’s what I gleaned from your matches there. Take it with a grain of salt, if I’m wrong anywhere hopefully someone can correct me. The overall goal in this match in my opinion is to make it hell for him to approach your with walk speed and stand strong, and punish any stupid things he does to try to force himself in. I’ll watch it again later to see if I have anything to add, cause I know I forgot something.
Yes, thanks. I knew I was jumping too much or at least with the wrong normals. It’s a month or two old, but I still have some problems with it. I’ll definitely follow yours and Wii’s advice of approaching it like the Zangief matchup though.
I’m thinking about U1 because U2 doesn’t give so much damage either. But as with Viper/Juri/twins, I don’t have many opportunities to land U1. So U2, while lacking in damage, is more utilitarian for me in these m/u’s. But I’ll definitely keep that in mind. Heck I think I want to do more vanilla training so I can see how I can use U1 against some characters, and also to learn how not to get hit. LOL vanilla Rufus j. hk x 2 to EX snake.
Which brings me to…
Well that’s not the only thing I’m punishing lol. Hosenka can beat the sand of Ultra 2, and rocks (though sometimes you have to dash ultra the latter if you’re too far away). I did use Ultra 2 for this one in the past, but the rocks actually had me thinking I could punish with Hosenka, and it turns out that you can. The tornado punish came for me a little later than that. Looks like AE2 will get a Cody bandwagon the same way original Super did, so it’s good to be ready.
From the games I watched (including some not against Ken) you backdash out of offensive pressure (blocked s.mp) for no reason. Get out of this habit asap. If they block your s.mp, this is the most ideal range for Chun to react to a lot of options that your opponent will attempt after blocking. AA if they jump, whiff punish sweep/c.mk poke, bait reversal, u1/hazanshu/focus fireball, jab dash ins, crouch block hurricane kick etc. This range can make a lot of shotos sweat and press the panic button.
Also, tip against Ken. After making him block a cr.hk poke, s.lk stuffs his f + mk counter poke.

See 2:25 for an example of what I’m talking about (comical ending too as a bonus :D).
I mentioned Vivitan1022 a while ago as my fav Chun (if you checked here more often you’d have seen that ) I also suggested that people follow them on Xbox as I do because to me he/she plays Chun exactly the way I aspire to. If you want I can link you to over an hour and a half of footage of them playing…
It helps that he/she plays Chun really aggressively and can do the loop with an almost perfect success rate (including FADC)… I have been following this Chun on Xbox for about 3 months and every match is a rushdown joy to watch
Also uses the same colour and outfit as me… I have been in love with this Chun for some time lol
Ha, they aren’t youtube vids I’m on about its something else, also I have about 15 fights saved on my replay channel because I found his Chun randomly in the replay channel and set him to follow instantly. He has a very what I would term aggressive style and plays Chun like I’ve said several times before exactly I wish I had the skill and reads too. I have a feeling you may like him for the reasons I do I could upload all the fights of his I have at some point…
Anyway back on subject I have the link below thanks to a friend (overheadgregg, who you should all sub to on youtube if you already haven’t… Which to be fair you will have). Anyway Gregg linked me to this guys page for reasons that are fairly obvious (I’m learning a new character) and it just so happens that this guy is friends with Vivitan so I got a 2 for 1. Here is the link I’m on about the first 3 or 4 mins are just him checking replays and err singing but look who joins his endless lobby…
Also these matches are honestly some of the best and more importantly consistently good aggressive Chun play I have ever seen so I hope you enjoy (I feel bad that I’ve only mentioned Vivitan once on here as I was kinda keeping him as my little secret, but follow him on Xbox as currently he is playing a LOT)
Thank me later this Chun is imo pretty special and not because he wins all the time (he doesn’t) but because he plays so NICE
I really like this Chun, not just cause of his execution but because he does so many subtle things I never think or forget to do. Like buffering legs from full-screen fireballs or backdashes to gain meter. Also, love the way he handles his match-ups. He uses his neutral jump quite well especially against the likes of Dictator.
i watched some of the fights on the stream archive, is a very fine chun playstyle but for some reason its just not my cup of tea, what am i doing wrong?
i do want to see some haneyama, nemo, nuki or y24 tho ;_;
I just respect his consistency, reads and ability to maintain an aggressive momentum throughout the match. There are a few things in his gameplay that I’ll endeavor to incorporate to keep my playstyle fresh. Viv is always active, and he does so in a manner that isn’t random or reckless. Not many players feel comfortable playing Chun that aggressive.
If your playstyle is more passive or defensive, that’s fine. There are others who desire to be more in-your-face at all times (sort of how Latif plays a very active Viper).
Just use these videos for nuggets of information for where you can potentially refine your gameplay… don’t aspire to be a carbon-copy of another player.
