Hey Bahn. Perhaps you might be giving yourself too little credit, because you actually played fantastic. This wasn’t clear in my post as I didn’t say anything too positive about the games, but I think it had more to do with Kalvin’s lack of experience against such a solid zoning Chun that he almost looked like he was searching for answers in the early part of those games. In the later games, he obviously got better and found solutions to certain things that were giving him problems i.e u1 against kikoken zoning. I am almost certain that given the opportunity to play 20 odd games, we would have seen both of you switching things up a lot more, since you’d both be more comfortable with how each other plays, and knowing what to look for. It’s not that Kalvin is a terrible player, because he’s not. He showed plenty to suggest that he is a very good player, but obviously, the holes surrounding his game took away some of the polish that he’s used to.
Fair comment Bahn. I’ve never claimed to be a perfect Chun player, and in fact am still trying to constantly improve. The things I criticise players about, I myself am guilty of at times. It’s a bad case of practising what I preach. But I do know that I am every bit conscious about the whole hit-confirm issue because I feel it’s very critical for me in every game to get damage in, and 8/10 times I’d be mashing the crap out of my buttons just to get ex-legs on hit-confirm. But you’re right, we are all not perfect and we will miss this from time to time. Perhaps, I could have engaged the argument better by saying to be more conscious of hit-confirms when you can because if you’re not even thinking about it, that translates into lazy habits and doing things habitually rather than reactively e.g. doing s.mp after c.lp. I hope that despite the nature of my comments being seen as a bit of “pot calling the kettle black”, it still has some merit.
Also, I realise that with some of you following my games, I now have some expectation to live up to, and I’d like to apologise if I’m not setting a good example. I hope to ensure future games will echo the sentiments of my own criticisms of others.
I used to use c.hp xx legs a lot more. I don’t know why, but I almost always go for c.lk > c.lp > s.lp > s.hp now. If it turns out they are crouching while I hit them, I replace hp with mp xx kikoken, because hp whiffs on a lot of characters that are crouching. Also, I would like to make it clear that I didn’t have any nerves or anything working against me. I was actually fighting the match pretty lightheartedly, laughing a lot and playing on emotion. And I had fun. Grinding it out in ranked can be taxing, this was a nice diversion from that. So when you see me dashing after him a lot or going balls out to get in on him, that is something I don’t normally do. One thing is true though, I do like to fight in close with Chun a lot more than I should, but that’s usually entirely dependent on the match-up or the player. Take into account this Dudley I played. My normal stance on Dudley is to play a poking/zoning game against him and keep him out. After the first round, it was evident I could beat him again playing the same way, but I decided to play a much more offensive game against him. (I apologize for the dropped BnB’s at the beginning, it was my second fight that night and I hadn’t quite warmed up.)
I’m pretty sure that wasn’t his main btw.
Other times I am overly aggressive is in match-ups that I don’t really know how to tackle, or that I lack a sufficient amount of match-up knowledge. Rufus, like Chun, is one of my less familiar match-ups. I have very little experience fighting against Rufus in general, and this was by far the best one I had ever played. One thing I do know is that you need to rush him down while he has no meter, so that was my main goal in round 1. After that, I didn’t know the best ways to keep him zoned out, so I tried my luck at an all out offense in an attempt to hopefully overwhelm him enough with mixups and pressure to take one more round. I feel I did ok on that end in this match up, but it ended up being a crouch tech that killed me.
The last reason I will ever go hyper aggressive is when someone is playing a strong zoning or keep away game with me. If I can’t beat them at it, I will oblige them by playing rushdown. I have only ever had this issue with Sagat, Dhalsim, Chun-Li, Rose, and an occasional strong zoning type Ryu. That’s my impatient nature poking it’s head into my game. I can play patient, but I usually save that for my offline game. This is what you witnessed in my fights with Bahn.
Man, going through some old replays I found some funny stuff. Just a little over a year ago, this was me, playing on pad and thinking I was awesome. This Cody player had to be so pissed off… Anyways, I cringe when I watch this now.
And then when I went through My Street Fighter identity crisis and was trying out new characters, and I always remember this one match I had.
That right there is the sole reason I am playing Chun right now. I never would have picked her up and tried her out if I hadn’t always remembered how scrubby that guy made me feel playing against him.
@ Kelvin: LOL that’s pretty much my Ken right now… What’s wrong with that :D… Also you shouldn’t have to feel like you need to justify your play in the vids, you did some good things… I think people were just making observations as it was assumed (by me at least) that you were expecting feedback, its just friendly advice so I’m sure no one wants to make you feel like you have to justify anything you did in the fights…
@Meeks: Ha don’t feel pressure if people are following you its their choice mate, every match can’t be perfect. If there are a lot of Chuns on here following you that’s a good thing right? I know I am but I’m not watching your fights and thinking “man I could do better than that!” I’m looking at them for the individual elements I can find that will help improve me (like what OS combinations you use and spacing on particular characters)… Although I imagine its hard to not think about what other might think, sod em, they are following you cos they must think you’re good; so go with it… Anyway I’m happy that no one here knows my GT lol since I changed it so I don’t need to worry about gaining followers (not like anyone would lol) which is lucky cos I struggle to play well in Ranked… I’m winning enough games in general but the level of play means you HAVE to often dumb your game down or at least adjust your game often to the opponents mentality level, thus I’m not playing well through fear of the random stuff many “Rankers” do… I have had some shockingly bad Ranked games lol
Case in point I checked the Euro Chun leaderboards today for the first time to see if I knew any of em and one guy had 4200BP and 700(ish)PP… Now I don’t want to make assumptions but to me that seemed funny, I mean the guy must be grinding away at a crazy rate eating a lot of losses and learning very little only focusing on get high on the board rather then getting good with the character
Wii I know your gamertag
Saw your upload against a Gouken player, that was awesome rushing-- but also kinda made me cry in anger. Whenever I try to rush a player like that I end up eating mashed DPs–like you say the random crap-- makes you feel even worst when you watch the replay and just see there hands were all over the place, amazing they get any moves out at all. Still having a hard time getting over the 1000pp hurdle due to this, I’ll play a really solid game, A/A jumpings, poking–even finally getting the Lp-Hp combos in to save meter BUT in the midst of all that, I’m a pretty reasonable guy its just 50% of the time I experience some very unreasonable things and lose, lol.
really hoping with everything I’ve been learning my winning % would be higher than 55%–hell I’m still on par with what I was in super.
I appreciate that Meeks. You’re not the first person to tell me this either. My peers often tell me that I don’t tend to give myself enough credit. I guess that’s my way of staying humble, especially when there’s still a broad range of advanced tactics that I need to incorporate or develop. In fact, about 6 months ago or so, I was reluctant to share videos because I wasn’t pleased with my performance back then.
And yeah, Kalvin has ALL the potential to be quite deadly once he addresses the points that were mentioned earlier in the thread.
LOL, it’s all good man. I think that’s something at one point or another experienced players are often guilty of, not just with gameplay, but how one handles losing as well. Though you hit it right on the head… not consciously thinking about things like hit-confirms and practicing them consistently can be detrimental. It’s always appreciated to have another set of eyes, because at times, we can be oblivious to certain habits that cause us to make poor decisions (or simply lose matches). Your points definitely had merit and I am doing my utmost to ensure that my execution with hit confirms improve (though it’s tough playing under online conditions at times). Again, thank you for taking the time to express your critiques. Input like that is what we all need to refine and improve our development.
Oh man, don’t get me started on grinding. There’s an American Chun player named vJOEv who I am sure jsut plays for shit/giggles, but it irks me to see his name SOOOO high on the leaderboards when all he literally does it just mash, mash, mash. His losses definitely outweigh the wins, but his current BP level gives the impression he’s "awesome.’
I am also not actively playing on my main acct – I use another acct regularly which I play in Endless/Ranked.
By all means, it was all great advice and I plan to try to incorporate as much of it into my play as I can. I’ve read every bit of it thoroughly and thought of ways to start applying it to my game. I just hoped everybody who watched those wouldn’t think that was the extent of my abilities. I’m not a great player by any extent, but I am capable of playing a little better than that. I’ll keep some video’s coming in. I just uploaded a lot of them, so I have plenty of material I wouldn’t mind having critiqued.
I actually spend a good deal of time watching my own replays and learning what I can. It’s always good to hear what other people think.
Yeah, my Ken…lol…I may have been a total flowchart scrub, but I was the best damn flowchart scrub there was! I used shoryukens as my defense. Why block when you can shoryuken, right? The defense that does damage! Man, I was so bad…I was a 3 button pony back then. Jab, fierce, and roundhouse. Never found any use for the other buttons.
Well I’m a lot more conscious about mindlessly pressing buttons after each game. Australia doesn’t particularly have a huge pool of players, and the number of scrubs here definitely outnumber the number of good players, so I find myself up against plenty of players where I don’t even think about what I’m doing.
I’m exactly the same. I’m often flattered by the positive things people tell me about my Chun, but it’s easy for me to be hard on myself because I tend to look at the things I’m not doing, or things that I’m doing badly. I think it just gives me something to strive for. On the flip side, I think it’s just as important not to underestimate myself. I’m confident in what I do, but I know I can be better.
As for uploading your games, I think so many players have jumped ship with Chun that it’s become a real rarity to see good Chuns with solid skills. You’re definitely one of them, so it will be good for everyone on this board to take something away from those games. It’s like Wii said, we don’t have to be 100% impressed with the video, but if there’s something to be learnt, that’s already a good motivation for you to post those videos.
No problems dude. I initially didn’t know how well it would be received, because I know in the past, my brutal honesty didn’t go down well with some people. I also know now, that in giving those critiques, that I have to be mindful of being a good example of what’s being said, especially with me having a youtube presence so I don’t have anywhere to hide lol
Oh yeah lol… You do know my Gamer Tag, I have no idea of the fight you’re referring to, I just press the buttons after the fight as fast as I can so everything I do gets uploaded lol… Apparently I rushed Gouken down That is what you have to do against him imo. Does that mean you’re following me?
If so why man, I am not a good Chun role model as I’m sure a few people on here will agree with, well I’m not good enough for you to use a slot up on anyway…
Don’t know how to multi quote so:

Yeah this… There are like very few actual active good Chun’s about even the Chun on my friendslist I aspire too has in fact turned to the Yun side for the moment (damn you Rockhowar ) so every good Chun should post matches if they can. I rate your Chun Bahn in terms of having the fundamentals of her down to a really high level. This might sound odd but I’ve always had the feeling me and you never really got along on here for whatever reason (a few interesting posts between us in the past what not) but it never changed the fact I understood you had a good grasp on the character. Basically at this moment in time it seems like Meeks is the only Chun uploader that has a good Chun with solid skills. That’s no offence to ANYONE on here mainly cos people like Smooth and Magman don’t really post and I know I’m in the same boat as must Chuns, in as much as I’m not great, or I REALLY… REALLY don’t think I am from where I know I stand in comparison to the players I get to play semi regularly that aren’t just the random onliners.
That’s not to say there aren’t great or at least very solid Chuns on here just no one is really uploading a lot or offering uploads with good lessons in em. I for one am in the process of actually breaking my game down with a few very good players that I respect, however only one of them uses Chun. This is a shame that it feels to me like I have few people that use my character that I can turn to in confidence that they won’t just offer advice that is either already known to me or only works on bad players…
Don’t really know where is this is going now lol… It’s late I’ve been using Ibuki and Sakura all night cos I had a set with one of the best Bisons in europe and a mate (god I hope he doesn’t read that cos he’ll never let me live that statement down lol) and my Chun got trashed (as she always does against him) but he was giving me sound advice during the set… But after that I just kinda felt like why bother lol so I just used my Alts…
Well err rant over Hope I haven’t offended anyone with my thoughts on where the Chun community appears to be atm
Oh, I most certainly did. I was as typical a Ken player as they got, only winning with scrub tactics and the belief that they were better than everyone else.
There isn’t an official multi-quote function, you have to just manually do it with the BB code for “Quote”.
I appreciate the praise, really. There are still some things I need to add to my okizeme to be even better.
Another reason why I never actively uploaded content is because I don’t have a capture card and it’s kind of a pain doing it with my smartphone, lol. Meeks’ comment has motivated me to work on putting up recent/past matches to share with you (including sessions where I don’t always win, which you don’t see often on Youtube accounts).
As for your online interactions, I don’t recall ever disliking you at all – and if it ever seemed otherwise, you have to understand that the context can easily be misinterpreted. As far as I am concerned - you’re cool in my book!!
Here are some matches I uploaded real quick.
Please note these matches are OLD (about nearly a year, so I don’t approach matchups quite the same way back then as I did before. Also, I apologize in advance about the sound (note: turn your PCs up); didn’t realize that the TV needed to be turned up much louder. -_-
Next to Yun, Bison is the only other character that I’m having trouble beating. Like Yun, he just seems to get away with a lot of safe moves, and Chun just lacks the capacity to counter him effectively.
I feel like the only reason you would post your losses is if you were constantly losing to a particular matchup, and were actively seeking an answer to break down the matchup. I think most of us here are at a level where we are able to win games against a greater part of the cast, and looking for ways to make us even better players. This can be done even in games where you win. I know it seems a bit egotistical to only post wins, and I want to state now, in all honesty, that I lose my fair share of games against some of the players I post my games up of. However, when I look for games on youtube, I am looking for games where a Chun player actually knows how to win a matchup. I generally don’t feel the need to criticise or give advice on replays unless the person who uploaded the replays actually asks to be critiqued. This is where I feel uploading losses is appropriate.
