Chun-li Video/Discussion Thread

You burn way too much meter unnecessarily.

I don’t remember really well what the environment is like online (I’ve only played offline for the past couple of months, last time I played online was when I played you Rayartz), so I don’t know if it was a lag issue, but I think you should know well enough that if he’s blocking, there’s no reason for you to fire off EX Legs.

I wouldn’t sweep after blocking Soul Spiral. I wouldn’t EX SBK either - you did that a couple of times, which I didn’t understand. After blocking Soul Spiral, she’s usually left far enough away that you can just downback and not worry about it - it’s not like she can throw you from that distance. Using EX SBK kills your meter, which is important against Rose since some of her best pokes are punishable by Reversal Super, not to mention using EX SBK like that leaves you vulnerable to punish.

I would pick U1 in this matchup simply to discourage Rose from using fireballs. It also has the added effect of being able to counter her if she tries to use Soul Reflect against your own projectiles - but you have to be quick about it. If you KNOW he’s going to cancel a poke into Soul Spiral, you can also activate in between for a counter.

Your anti-airing with st.MK is good, but you need to have less fear when anti-airing from other distances. If she’s closer, cl.st.MK is still good, and from farther, st.HP works well too.

EDIT: I only watched the Rose matches.

SnakeAes –
U bet! I gotta have more faith in block strings such as cr.lp, st. mp --but I have such a fear of mashers that nail me during those types of strings. I tried so hard to bait his Rose to reflect a kikouken towards the end of the first match I believe it was, because I wanted the Ultra – probably too badly though as I think focusing on that costed me the match.

Sorry for some reason I was looking at the Rose player’s Ultra meter and thought you were the one using U2, lol. My bad.

Agreed with the HSU, I definitely thought he’d get punished for its overuse.

I was also thinking he was not Kikoken zoning or using Kikoken as often as he should have. Or is that risky against a Makoto?

@Rayartz use U2 against Rufus, it will save you a lot of grief. Being saddled with only U1 is part of the reason why this matchup was even harder in Vanilla.

It was covered in the matchup thread fairly recently

I disagree, personally I go for U1 Vs Rufus unless I know the player well and know his tendencies but that’s just me, each to their own as both Ultra’s have a good use in the match up, its just U1 has the damage and it shuts down some of Rufus’ options…

@Rayarts, its pretty late I’ll watch your vids later man and give you some feedback

From experience, I haven’t found a way to make U1 land reliably outside blocked Tornadoes or blocked pokes (and the usual EX legs of course…but it’s hard to come by when you’re dodging dive kicks). OTOH, U2 discourages jumping/too much dive kicking when the other guy sees your Revenge meter filling.

I don’t know the Dee Jay matchup, sadly can’t comment on those vids.

u2 for rufus

i wouldn’t use strong after a c.jab so much its not really a true block string and you will get sf4’d (Mashed o/s shorts, jabs and dp’s). do c.jab c.jab c.short, c.jab c.jab tick throw, c.jab c.short c.jab or c.jab xx s. rh for that frame trap if you see they crouch tech alot of your throw attempts. just go to training mode and set the cpu to crouching and all block to practice some real block strings.

You also need to be more composed and focus on not mashing yourself. In previous matches against you, I found that you excessively mash your inputs during strings that should be a lot more crisp. I also agree with Snake regarding meter management which is key in many matches when you are looking to create opportunities for big damage (read: throws should not be your first option). Against Rose, it’s important to maintain a certain amount of spacing. You can keep her honest by using St. Strong liberally. Also, super is a very solid attack to punish her Soul Spiral (this is only safe for Rose at maximum range).

Try to focus more on your anti-air options, learn the ranges and also focus on your observation skills. Once you gain more confidencebin these areas, your gameplay will improve a great deal.

Against U2 Makoto it’s risky, but against U1 Makoto there’s nothing she can do to punish on reaction. She can EX Hayate on prediction/guess to counter hit before the fireball comes out, but once it’s out there she has to deal with it unless she has Ultra 2. Especially considering the effectiveness of Chun’s pokes as anti-airs I’m surprised Haneyama didn’t zone more with Kikoken.

I pick U2 against Rufus, always. In my experience at least, there are only a few tools Rufus has that you can punish with U1, and a smart Rufus doesn’t need to use those tools to win once you have Ultra stocked. Picking U1 in the matchup, at least in my opinion, doesn’t limit Rufus’ options enough to turn the match to Chun’s favor.

On the other hand, U2 combos off df+LK which is an effective counter to Rufus’ dive kick, j.HP which is an effective air-to-air against just about everything except Rufus’ j.HK, and EX Legs which starts up quickly enough to use as a Reversal to try and surprise someone during a blockstring (but don’t do it often). While you do have to trade the damage output, I think it’s worth it to have the threat there.

Those tools that Rufus has form a huge part of his blockstring pressure, so if having Ultra stocked takes away several of his BnB’s on blocked opponents that’s a good thing… In some Match Up’s I pick the Ultra not to use exactly but to take away options, its like some Fei players will Pick U2, not cos it only works against people jumping in which means its harder to land than his U1 but because then you have to respect him more…

I do pick Ultra2 in the Rufus match up sometimes like I said it depends on the Rufus player, its just imo this game is won and lost on how little damage you take rather than how much you can potential deal, so I’d rather removes characters options over having an easier way to score damage…

I agree that Rufus’ tools do make up a huge part of his blockstring pressure, but realistically, which of his offensive tools can you punish with U1?

I can only count Rufus’ cr.HP, or a poorly spaced Galactic Tornado. Like I said though, I don’t feel that a good Rufus REALLY needs either of those things to do damage. Once he sees that you have Ultra 1 stocked, he can easily just remove those things from his game and still have plenty of ways to get in and deal damage that Chun still has difficulty punishing.

You can punish nearly all Rufus’ blockstrings that end with Galactic Tornado between the last normal and the tornado, its difficult but not that impossible…

I just thought I’d mention that as I haven’t so far cos I assumed everyone knew this

EX Messiah Kick can also be punished on block with U1 this is actually one of the main reasons I use U1 in that match up as I’ve gotten it off a few times thanks to VCFan1001 for that tip! Other then that I like to use U1 on characters that I know will juggle in the corner. But I actually just find myself using U1 in every matchup. I’m more confident with it.

hey whats going on guys
Just me playing some casuals with Juri player at a tourney. I had no idea of what do to do but i we played more i understand

TO SNAKEAES :

some notes about the thigh magazine

[]j.HP x2 > Ultra 1 (not enough time for Ultra 2) —> there is enough time for U2

]You can include Kikouken in the Ultra juggle list — http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bD1SVea-

I’m currently reading through it, great work man, when it’s all done we shall give you a medal.
can’t wait for more option selects (OS and explanation), safe jumps , frametraps, and maybe "dirty tricks’
keep it up

edit:
i just realized i posted in the wrong topic by mistake, oh well.

Launchpad, best take a look at the next teams whom just qualified out of the 2nd tournament into the top 8 finals right alongside your team. Top 8 Finals is going to be cut throat and down right killers, imo.

LOL 2:10
Chun and Yun get KO’d at the same time.

Ahhhh, seeing this matchup between Sim v. Chun takes me back to all the grueling matches I used to have with Arturo back at CF when A3 was still popping, lol. Good times.
