Chun-li Video/Discussion Thread

lol nice one, Lud. Pick a free win for you lol.

I’m going Honda next.

Very nice play Lud!

Looking forward to MM’s T. Hawk…

Way to abuse the j.fpX2 cr.hk option select there. Does will08 post on these forums?

my chun li was really new, i didnt even know what combo to use to punish and all that lmao, But yea any critism would be helpful

@Siitch: Writing notes as I go:
vs Fei Long:
-You backed yourself to the corner in 9 seconds. You don’t want to do that. Hold db to charge for kikokens without giving up ground
-Too many backjumps, again giving up ground for no reason
-Ditto for fullscreen backdashes, they serve no purpose
-AA: You weren’t bad with far hp, but from closer he was jumping in for free
-I’m sure you realized, but you threw him out of the corner instead of into it in round 3
-Nice finish with the super

Most importantly you need to work on your space control. You were giving it up for free most of the time, make him work for it. You must learn how to deal with pressure without backing up because if you do, eventually you’ll hit the wall and won’t be able to back up anyway. So that’s definitely something to work on.

The jumps were also a bit excessive. You were doing backjump double fierce from a range where it was impossible for him to jump forward and be hit by it, and so you were just wasting space.

So basically what my advice for now boils down to is: stop backing up

LUD : I see you do a lot of stand LK against Rufus Lud, can you say why ? It prevent him to attack ?

Since i rarely see mirror matches, here are 3 mirror match videos of me against Valmaster, a french chun.

I prefer using Hosenka versus Chun and him Kikosho. I would like to have your opinion about which ultra is better for you in mirror match.
Also i think i play Chun too defensive and my real style is aggressive, i would like to develop my game when i’m close to the opponent to make pressure. But since I’m still new to this game I’m always afraid to risk things. lol

18:55 starts grand finals Chun mirror vs Lud. But we have matches in there using Chun against other characters. Apparently I still need help on the Dhalsim match, I almost lost (down to pixels).

About Dhalsim - I don’t understand how you deal with st.short, b+short. So you can focus and dash, but they recover before you do or at the same time, and b+short is two frames. Since she doesn’t have a DP, it’s hard to deal with. I guess you can hasan-shu, but he started to slide under and punish hard, with both throw and b+forward into flame.

Great videos. Your reaction for U1 through fireball is always on point:tup:

When I played Chun in Vanilla I was aggressive but it got me into a lot of trouble. I tend to play aggressive with other games like CVS2 or 3rd strike. Eventually I started to play defensive and it helped…but now I want to be aggressive again lol.

aggressive is the only way i play chun li, i am the fiercest rushdown chun

on offense you don’t have to worry too much about the risk of a reversal. you don’t necessarily need to throw out a meaty attack to continue pressure with chun, however, meaty c.mk on the opponent’s wakeup is safe from many things, including cannon spike, fp thunder knuckle, all headbutts beside EX, tiger uppercut, etc. I haven’t tested it on ryu/akuma/ken unfortunately. cancel it into mk or hk legs for some meter & stun!

generally there tends to be a move you can use on the opponent’s wakeup that allows you to continue pressure. they’re very situational, like using meaty c.lp against Bison (because it allows you to block EX Psycho Crusher due to its long startup) where I’ve had very little success with it otherwise.

When you haven’t yet scored a knockdown, you may be stymied by the opponent’s consistent blocking. fortunately, Chun has a strong tick-throw game, which is great because she has many many safejump setups after a forward throw. use cl.rh counterhit setups to punish OS tech in conjuction with that to open a sucker up. lk hazanshu (or c.mk cancelled into hazanshu) can hurt an OS tech as well. Up close to your opponent, lvl1 and lvl2 focus are great. not necessarily for a guaranteed crumple, if they block you’re at frame advantage after a forward dash. A lot of Chun’s rushdown is simply applying pressure without actually putting yourself in much danger. You wait for a crack in their defense and then blaze in with the power of hate.

if you find yourself unable to get in and stay in, go back to your core logics of Chun’s gameplay: footsies. Use s.mp and s.fp, but make sure you’re walking your opponent toward the corner at least! Eventually the other player is going to find some way to deal with your s.mp and s.fp. once you see this counter happen, you now have a recognizable reaction to punish with sweep. walk in like you’re gonna s.mp, walk back a bit, watch them whiff a c.mk or something, hit that sweep! bam, knockdown, and you can start all your fun.

Chun’s mixup game is either a fairly easy-to-read high/low game with up-close normals cancelled into lk hazanshu, and her nasty tickthrow/OS tech punish options. Your best option up close is always that forward throw, however, for the safejumps it allows.

Past that, Chun’s rushdown is a little different than most. Cammy’s rushdown is constant pressure into a tick throw or a combo. Chun’s rushdown involves a metric fuckton of counterhit pokes.

Kayane, from the match I saw you play on the EVO stream against that Ryu player, you seem to have the fireball/s.mp/s.fp game down. all it really takes is a little faith that if you move forward behind that wall rather than backward, everything will be ok. I assure you, it will be! Reversals can be baited, and the health bar is just details.

I use stand LK against rufus to stop him from doing instand dive kick when he’s close. I’m starting to like that match a lot more, but i still think it’s in his favor. Ryu is giving me so much trouble now. A good ryu with good spacing and footsies will shut me down. I don’t have an answer for his low forward. I don’t like going for whiff punishing low forward with my sweep, if i miss my sweep, he’ll sweep me instead.
What to i do here vs low forward?

Ultra one is the best pick in this match up, it def stops chun to throw kikokens. if both chun picks ultra 1, the match up will be about footsies or random hasa-su. I like using U2 in the mirror though cuz i like that extra damage kikosho does and chun has low life.

I dunno about U1. It’s really good if you’re winning. Kikoshou easily makes comebacks and punishes hasan-shou hard.

What I don’t like about U1 is that if you walk forward you can’t use it. So if U2 Chun is winning, you can hosenka, but they can easily just throw kikokens when you don’t have charge.

I haven’t tried U1 in Chun mirror, but I don’t think it would work on the players that I’m playing against. :smokin:

a punch of casuals before the tournament. Also i decided to go crasy vs Steve sagat, lol, focus madness.

Good Ryu’s are a pain in the ass :frowning:

However, try whiff punishing his low forward with st.strong. It recovers quicker, and harder for him to punish your punish attempt.

Also, level 1 focus, release, backdash. Just make sure not to use it a lot or he’ll break it.

Yo…!!!

Ark on point. It’s the same exact thing I told him to do after I saw his post. I also told him st.short fishing is pretty safe.

I agree with st. strong as punish and lvl 1 focus as counterpoke. HP kikoken is a lot like lvl 1 focus in that it moves Chun’s feet out of the way, if you ever happen to be in that very specific situation it’s something to remember you have.

lol… i was gonna say that mags…

A couple things I learned from watching this match. No matter how hard a beating Akuma gives you if you are patient you only have to return the favor twice and he’s dead thus stay calm and pick your spots. Second thing I picked up was that u1 is a really smart ultra to pick against Akuma, even the best dirtiest Akuma’s mistime there air fb’s from time to time.
