Nah they both come out at the same speed (cl. mp and cl. hk). Cl. mp is more actual confirming time to pull off EX Legs. I still don’t know why he would choose it over cl. HK though with the way Ken whiffed those DPs (cl. hk xx EX Legs is free with no need for confirming time). I guess he was just stylin’.
Ok here it goes. My main SF4 mentor mains Bison and his bison is easily the most dangerous bison I have ever seen. He is right up there with SpiderTao and Andre in my personal opinion.
So I have LOTS of experience with the bison match, yet only a few tips because the match can be very very hard for chunner.
-
If he has meter, don’t throw fireballs when you are in EX scissor range. This especially applies to dashing or walking behind fireballs.
-
Never jump at him unless its a safe jump setup. He will standing roundhouse you out of the air every time…or worse, he will use jump strong x1 > st. rh. If he has ultra…then you REALLY don’t want to jump and eat j.strong x2 > ultra.
-
Your standing fierce can stuff his scissor kicks from the right range. You want to try and fight him at that range if possible.
-
If he gets poke happy with st.rh, use c.strong to hit him low.
-
Save meter for EX SBK. Use this to prevent him from using grounded meaties on your wake up. If their timing is superb, they CAN and WILL stuff EX sbk on wakeup…if that is happening, you want to delay your EX SBK until slightly post wake up to catch the recovery of his grounded meaty attack, not the active part.
-
Use that throw range. Try to land as many forward throws as you can because you get a safe jump setup off a forward throw.
-
ANY time you combo him with EX legs, juggle it into ultra. Sure he will fall out, but this is basically your only chance to land ultra on a GOOD bison.
-
You CAN poke him but ONLY FROM THE CORRECT RANGE. If you are too close he will destroy you with standing forward and standing roundhouse. Learning and maintaining this distance takes a LOT of practice.
-
Any good bison will NOT try to stomp or DR you unless they set it up to be meaty on your wakeup. If they are stupid enough to try and stomp you when you are able to react, air throw them.
-
If they try to DR you, watch their meter. A smart bison will want you to try and focus their DR, so they can EX it and crush you. You do NOT want to get hit by EX skull crusher > c.short > c.forward > RH scissors for over 350 damage.
-
One of your biggest problems is his jump in fierce. The hitbox on that is godlike and its probably the best jump in hitbox in this entire game against grounded opponents. NONE of your anti airs will work if he spaces this correctly, so don’t even bother if your opponent is good. Just backdash out and reset the spacing on your terms.
If you can bait the jump fierce, then you can counter with YOUR neutral jump fierce and juggle that into either ultra, or EX SBK for extra damage.
Thank you for this! I haven’t had too much experience against decent Bisons these days. It’s been Rog all day erry day at the arcade. The only trick I’ve been practicing against (online) Bisons is air throwing him. They stop jumping around after a few of those and I end up being stuck on what to do aside from build meter. So thanks again for the above advice!
All I will say is that a SUPER good bison will drive you crazy with his j.strong.
J.strong WILL stuff Chunners airthrow on reaction…its horrible.
At this point if the bison is good I forget I even have the damn airthrow unless I can bait a jump fierce or a stomp.
If they suck then yeah, airthrow away…but when you run into a legit dictator player who knows the timing to make j.strong kill your airthrow…its just about the most maddening experience you can have.
:china:
shizza reppin’ chun at LA Riots. doing very good against Keno
shizza plays on a 360 pad???
Yeah man… where have you been? :wgrin: It’s been mentioned multiple times on here. His execution on an arcade stick is getting better; but ya - he’s earned his props emerging as more than just a “console king”, nuff said.
thats impressive. the triggers on the xbox contoller doesnt make it easy to use HK in a piano motion.
and it seems dayasha is building some red bar. wonder who is negging him haha
i use a madcatz fightpad which is 10x better than the xbox controller and i dont do pianos at all
wow, good stuff. then how do you do a st.HK->exLL punish ??
btw very nice random ultras vs. gootecks, i loved them all
and the ultra time waste scam that backfired, broke my heart
Guys, don’t feel like you have to play with “x” controller. I think the best way to play is to train yourself to be perpetually using something different or just be able to adapt to whatever somebody puts in front of you.
Im constantly finding myself using a ton of different sticks. Horis, TEs, custom made sticks, sticks where a guy put a spring from an office chair in it (no joke, took a ton of force to move the stick at all), anything really.
I started with pad when I played 3s. It took me probably a year or two to feel comfortable on a MAS western stick. When I started playing sf4 everyone was playing on japanese sticks. it was a whole new thing and I couldnt even dp or fireball really.
I find that constantly being able to adapt to whatever people put in front of you is the best way to play. If you have to have everything set to your exact specifications or using some crazy whacked out controller, things may backfire or this may not be an option. (as some of you may have noticed when you try to use your pads on systems they dont work with).
Not trying to act like I know everything or whatnot, I realize any of you would stomp me. Just throwing out what has worked for me and maybe it might work for you pad chuns.
EDIT: I guess if I had a point it would just be that it’s discouraging to see talented players struggle because they aren’t in their ideal setup. If you are able to play with multiple types of sticks or pads or what have you, you’re really empowering yourself. Especially on arcade cabs where you can’t use pads or consoles that dont support the controller you’re using. Again, apologies if it sounds like Im telling people how to play. Dunno how to say all this without sounding arrogant.
I just mash. It’s a calculated mash though.
Yeah the whiffed timer scam was a kick in the nuts. I think i have to wait till 2 seconds instead of 3.
that was some good shit at specialists ii friday night, btw
That’s pretty easy to do when your posting every 2 seconds asking for matchup advice in the video thread.
ah but you posted the video link that has goes right to the match. Embarrassed to say but I wasn’t sure how people were doing that until now:sweat:
Ninja Edit: here’s a vid of a chun named Debu
He does an awesome (imo) wake up tactic where he gets a knockdown then crosses up with j.lk and follows it up with an instant stomp > j.hk then goes for the throw. I wonder if he could have comboed that hk with something rather than going for a reset, and maybe the reason why he didn’t?

very nice Chun vs. Guile match
shows a lot of chun options and mixup
Watching Farce is like reading a Chun Li textbook

Troof
Glad to see I’m not the only fightpad chunner here
I sign any and all negs I have given. So you would know if it was me.
((or at least he would know and I assume he would bring it up))
I think the best version of this I have seen:
instant overhead stomp > crossup j.short > crouch short > whatever you want
Its amazing, but I can’t hardly ever pull it off because its really hard for me to hit her stomp correctly.
Fuck capcom for making it down instead of down forward…I think its the only thing like this in the whole game that might actually be easier on an octogate.

this chun sucks! first time i see a japanese chun that even I am better
Jesus why didnt she FA his FPs. It would have scored a crumple and allowed her to get in close.
