If Ryu does an air tatsu to cross over you on a jump in there’s a very good chance the almighty anti-air short will whiff. I played over 100 matches on Saturday with Chun and this was the only Ryu I ever saw take advantage of that. The short recovers fast enough so you can deal with whatever the Ryu does after crossing over you, but if you’re not ready you might get caught blocking the wrong way when your brain shuts off because you think you scored an easy anti-air, but in fact completely whiffed.
Chun feels like she can’t not win. lol. Very boring. Just pressing buttons at people. Currently an 8 game win streak with her and only like 10 games played with her ever besides a few on beta 1.
Her walkspeed gives her a good throw game even with jabs. And her normals tell other characters neutrals to kind of fuck off. And her normals tell people to not press buttons. Add to that that her st.lk is a stellar AA and she seems to have just about everything.
I’m not a fan of ending combos into ex legs after all my matches yesterday. It feels like, in general, saving the meter for ex bird is the way to go since she’s basically helpless on wakeup otherwise. Of course that doesn’t stop me from just mashing out an ex legs during a combo in a panic though.
I personally feel this is the most fun Chun in a while. Getting her 3S normals in a new game is really fun and her V Trigger when optimized will give her access to way more combo options than she’s had in a while. Chun Li doing AA and air to air juggles regularly is really cool. Plus back fierce palm to absorb projectiles.
I say as long as you have a 3 frame jab your defensive game even without meter isn’t absolutely terrible. Sometimes you will have to block even if you have a reversal because the punishment for whiffing your reversal is a crush counter that you don’t want to eat. You’ll see even Ryu players playing like they don’t have a DP just to save themselves the trouble of dealing with a crush counter on a bad read.
Ironically though I think Chun Li has one of best reversals for this game with EX SBK. It covers both sides of her and doesn’t launch her in the air as a recovery making it tougher to CC punish than other reversals. Her V Reversal isn’t bad either and keeps the opponent standing. Blocking builds you V Gauge as well so sometimes you just gotta hold back long enough to get that V Reversal and plan to use that or just stick a jab or throw tech out at the right point.
This is all very old school thinking to get out of a bad situation. SFIV made people heavily reliant on invincible stuff to get out of situations when you had characters like A2 Rose that pretty much only had Alpha counter or super to get out of shit. You ended up just blocking and teching a lot due to that.
The game in general is made more “honest” so your mind is your best reversal. Make good decisions while you’re blocking and don’t look at not having a reversal opportunity as a dire situation. You can get out of it if you play it right. Plus you always get some kind of a tech after every knockdown.
Ok, so I thought Giefs super was instant. Like if you weren’t already getting the hell out of dodge when he activated it you were boned. Is that apparently not the case now? I’ve definitely been hit with that super before from farther away than I was in this match.
It can be sometimes, but it’s unreliable. Slower startup than even B+RH. If your opp is doing an empty jump in then it’ll work, but more often than not you’ll get stuffed if they hit a button. Her go to anti air for beta 3 is Short. Neutral jump RH is also alright but isn’t as brain dead as Short. Likewise with air throw. B+RH was the AA star in earlier betas, but it’s been nerfed so I find it trading a lot or being outright beaten. In VT you can get some good juggles off of it though.
Geif is free; just gotta switch your brain to USF4 Chun. I’ve fought dozens of varying “skill” all have fallen.
Some neat tech vs Nash.
Cr. Mp and Cr. HP go under his cresent moon kick (Adon’s kick)
V-Skill will also beat it clean on reaction and can be followed up with Stomp into EX ALegs if you want to use meter
I’m actually curious what all V-Skill can counterhit/punish; seems to have a good hitbox on startup.
Air LLegs is becoming my new Air-to-Air move.
I just noticed something kind of interesting: counter hits in v-trigger gain the additional hitstun even though it’s multi-hits. So like if you do F+HK, normally you can only link cr. jab, but now with CH you can link st. mp -> cr. hp like in the older beta. I’m not sure how you would fish for that particular counterhit, but it’s good to know.
@gilley a couple things I noticed with Chun’s frame data coming from Beta 2 to 3:
Apparently Chun’s EX Legs are no longer -3 on block now (can’t 3f reversal it). It’s safer, but not safe enough to avoid Zangiefs super afterward.
Her F+MP/B+MP is now 7f startup
Her cr. lp might be +5 on hit now? I say this because counterhit cr. LP is definitely +7 (she can link into F+MP, cr. HP and cr.HP which are all 7f startup).
