LK SBK has faster startup so that when you late cancel it’s still more likely to hit. They just wanted to show the concept, not torture people who never played her.
Anyway, I never really agreed with either narrative of Chun being “absolute #1 best character” in S1 or bottom tier in S2, but she’s a lot worse off because of the S1 narrative because they went overboard in the response to it, so I’ll take the S2 narrative if it means she gets some help for the next big balance patch. She still has tournament presence, but I think she’s actually mid-tier (at best) and that’s always going to be a struggle against the top who either have scarier mixups or shit out damage for very little cost. Vs other mids or lower is not bad, but you can only hope to run into that so many times in competition.
-Balrog is too safe. Unless that changes, I don’t think anything Chun gets short of a command grab or functional point blank frame trap (i.e counterhit button or throw is the guess they have to make) will actually help turn the matchup around. Can’t really get him off of downback that often imo and his forward moving attacks are either + or only punishable point blank. Since his v-skill gets past FB so easily, I usually throw out a lot of st. HPs to chip away at white health (like a secondary fireball) until I notice they’re trying to counter or out-poke that THEN I’ll throw in the Kikoken to counter that and get them fixated on getting past that with v-skill or jump so I can chip away with st. HP again. That seems to be the only way I build damage on him before V-trigger unless they do something stupid that I can actually punish.
-I’m pretty sure they only made it so DPs are adjusted to be better anti-airs and you can still do meaty pressure and stuff to them on the ground unless they have EX.
The problem is every time you turn on the stream you hear commentators say she’s still good. I don’t agree that she’s at the bottom, but if you can’t deal with the common top tiers, what does it even matter if she’s mid-tier or at the bottom? Point is she needs a lot of help and unfortunately she has a lot of stuff going against her that’s going to prevent her from getting that help. I bring this up all the time, but look at Chun throughout the SF4 iteration. Capcom really dragged their feet “improving” her and all the changes still amounted to nothing.
She’s already going through a similar trajectory in 5. Nerfed to high hell then she gets a few pointless buffs that don’t affect her game in any significant way( EX legs cancel, a few new combo possibilities etc) and the newest patch didn’t even bother to give her anything. The community hates a Chun that’s good, Capcom never takes real steps to improve Chun, the community also for some reason still thinks S2 Chun is ok, and apparently so does Capcom. I think they’ll add some stuff for her in S3, but I predict it’s gonna be more useless bullshit. We are lucky we got S1 Chun by accident cause I know there’s no way they intentionally made her that strong on purpose like a lot of people used to say For some reason she can’t get the Cammy treatment, who despite “nerfs,” always comes out on top.
I think that’s why it’s just hard for me to stay positive about the character. They’re too scared to go hog wild with the character and then just scale her back a bit (ie. Urien from S1-S2.5) They just nerf super hard then give nothing back in return . If Capcom doesn’t fix the pushback on some of Chun’s normals, make some of them more plus, or give her a better throw range or a bit more damage, Chun is just not gonna make it as a serious contender in SFV ever again. They MUST give her at least two of those things just mentioned for her to even stand a chance imo. Leave the gimmicky shit behind.
Life is rough for us nowadays. I think Chun needs more damage most of all. I think the common story that happens to me and most Chuns i see is that we start the round doing well, we have a good life lead then get hit once VTC and then lose. I think on a fundamental neutral level, Chun is fine. It is just that she is very prone to getting jumped on or getting counter poked into death while she herself can’t snowball characters like that. I think she needs better damage, and a real corner throw loop. She already have a decent corner carry on her attacks and if SF5 is all about corner pressure then i am fine with her having bad mid-screen pressure in favor of a strong corner one and she needs to do more damage, badly IMO.
Anyways, what do you guys got on Ed ? I still struggle to deal with his charged HP and V-skill gimmicks. It is just that Chun’s jump is way too slow to be a threat and usually Chun players don’t jump match so i keep getting tagged by them.
I agree, she is close to being proper, more damage would be nice but it’s not what I want…
Things I want?
Less push back on light attacks
Normal throw range
-/+ 0 on air legs
St FP. -3
Normal jump speeds/arc
F/B mp -/+ 0 on block and +5 on hit
F. Hk -/+0 on block and +3 on hit no matter how close.
B.hp crumple crush counter
Cr. L.p. 3 frames
It’s not chun, it’s him. Any decent player can make a character look good if they are playing gains people they are clearly better than. As an example, a diamond player could probably make any character look good if they are playing against golds.
But he’s beating people on his level or higher even, seriously who is this dude? I’ve never seen him in tournament videos yet my youtube feed is full of videos of him playing Chun and generally kicking ass.
Yamada is most likely just another one of the solid set of Japanese players who are probably newer competitively to SF in V but are making a mark. If the game had an arcade release you’d most likely already see him at more Japanese tournaments. The lack of arcade for this game has kept a lot of would be tournament players to mostly being online warriors. Yamada just clicks really well with the Season 2 version of Chun and with his skill that gets him to do well. The character isn’t top tier because of him, but it’s not uncommon for people like him and Bonchan to do well with just ok characters.
There’s such a huge debate over how good Gief is, but everybody knows once Itabashi gets his hands on Gief you could lose.
I would really love to learn how to be like that with Chun, I love me some Juri, but Chun has always been my SF char, regardless of game and I just can’t resist the need to play her (even when she looks as weird as she does in this version, I mean seriously what’s with her face/skin)
Less pushback on lights here would probably suffice tbh without the need to increase throw range. Other characters who apparently have less of a throw range than Chun can still tick throw/trap without moving forward and if you set up something in training mode where you block their tick button and then have Chun Li throw afterward instead… she’ll be in throw range.
I’d be legitimately surprised if they give her two of anything on that list. Not because I think it would be too good for her personally, but because I think they’re scared to do buffs like that for Chun and certain other characters.
You have to be an in environment that helps you become that good with Chun. If you’re just some guy playing online with no one that good around you then you’ll just be average dude making lots of mistakes with Chun. Most of us just don’t seek out the players or the environment that’s necessary for such. Whether it’s because we literally can’t or just choose not to.
If he is MOV’s protege like said above, then that explains a whole lot.
The problem is I don’t have the environment, I work most of the day, I know no one esle that plays around me, much less SFV and I live in a country where I don’t speak the language. Add an infant child and a wife to the mix you get the picture.
Back to the YamadaTaro and bonchan making bad characters look good, I understand, but then again you don’t see Daigo using Ryu in tournaments because he was doing bad and he is playing a character that clearly isn’t his thing, and he’s getting depressed and eating his feeling away apparently, oh my god the dude got fat.
Ok I think I might be going crazy but FANG is an issue. He honestly a ridiculously obnoxious MU for me personally and I do think he is a bad MU for Chun. Even in S1 he was able to fight her well, now he flat out wins imo.
I have more issues against him than I do against Urien or Akuma or any other strong character.
Fang is much like Rashid in regards to his ability to pressure seemingly non-stop with buttons and relatives safe specials on block
I’ve played some intense Fang players and they are honestly a handful.
so like… instant-air legs sucks balls now? 'cause when I use it I get nothing out of it.
I’m seriously considering abandoning project Chun Li, I cannot translate hours of training into in game things, I cannot anti air worth shit because I never go to s.LK and I’m too used to DPing everything.
You can get 195 damage out of it, or 212 with meter. So if you’re not prone to shimmy it has its uses. I still kinda like to use it very sparingly at max range where it likely won’t combo cause it’s still a pressure tool in Chun’s already drastically weakened pressure tool kit, but it’s not worth using as an integral part of her game anymore. Too many drawbacks now.
I still use it, although I use the LK version over the MK version now because it drops faster and feels more consistent to combo out of. People still don’t seem to do anything about it after blocking, so it’s still useful for me to throw out occasionally.
It’s funny how often I seem to get away with stuff when it’s “not my turn” frame advantage-wise than when it is my turn, but I end up mistiming the button and getting hit by a disrespect jab into full counter hit combo.
