Choosing your Main Character

I love character consistency.

Anyway, I choose the most Punk or Emo character in the game.
So right now I’m using A.B.A in Guilty Gear and Tira is Soul Calibur.

I just pick characters I like, usually because they’re badass, hot females or just have unique or interesting movesets. As long as they can compete and I’m used to how they play, I’ll roll with them. HOWEVER, if a character I like happens to be shitty (CvS2 Kyosuke), or good enough that you see them in every goddamn match and grow tired of them (CvS2 Sagat), I pick someone else.

I pick the one who looks the coolest.

If no one looks cool, I just don’t play the game at all.

i usually play the whole roster and see who i had the most fun with and got decent success, then the growth begins

i also like learning annoying characters…blackheart for example

If there’s a pro wrestler, I pick him/her. Because everybody knows professional wrestling is the strongest martial art.

Otherwise I generally main the least popular character in the game just because I’m a non conformist ***. Which often times is a low tier character unfortunately. But I enjoy making shitty/unpopular characters as competitive as I can more than I enjoy winning with high tier characters. I don’t really have a problem with tier whoring, but meh. Some people call me a scrub for doing this, but like… one single character is almost always top of the top in fighting games. Should we ALL pick that character ALL the time in order to truly be playing to win? Probably. But most people probably don’t. So whatever.

i always play ninjas unless they suck or im bad with them. so far its only worked out for 1 game

The more badass a character is by design the greater likelihood of me picking them.

Why you would never see me play games like AH and AH2

I don’t have a preference in style or visuals, I just try everyone in the game and pick the one/s I seem to use the best.

I tend to go with charge characters, mainly because I’ve been using Boxer and Claw since I was a kid.

The one thing I look for in a main is heavy hitting basic attacks and specials, and a command throw. My characters usually end up being on the slower side, but it’s a small price to pay for all that strength. From Zangief to Maxima to Marduk, if they’re packing some power behind those punches and can bypass an enemy’s guard, then they’re for me.

While I usually give everyone a chance nowadays, when I want a main, I want to keep pressure on a opponent with risk to it. That doesn’t mean I have to always rush through.
A fast grappler is all I need if the game has it.
Failing that or as a secondary, any Westerner that looks badass (even when the lead is European or American, like Terry), and/or the one with the biggest rack out of girls while still looking attractive to me outside that.
Like goldilocks and curly hair are a dealbreaker unless they’re exaggerated like twin drills or if their hair reaches down to their knees.
Which is why I’ll probably main Petra once (or if) AH2 gets around my area.

My very very first main was Guile.
I’ve played CE on the Genesis. I was 6 years old and for me :qcf: :p: and :dp: :p:
was too hard for me. So when i realized that charging was better for me for throwin fireballs, i knew that i will play charge chars forever.

Today, its all bout Rog on ST. You already know why, no need to explain.
And i play Chun and Guile.

On an anotha note, i play chars with unique style (like ST Rog). I hate chars that are named as main chars (Heros) of the game. Cuz most of them do suck…Fo real.

BONES EDIT: I play chars with some good AAs too.

Don’t ask me, I chose El Fuerte. …ugh.

I guess it is based on how they play. Some characters are so fun to play as that I have no choice but to main them (like Taki in sc4)

Most of the time it’s by appearence.

Best to go with with the character types you have a natural affinity for. My reflexes aren’t top, but i’m good at reading my opponent and zoning. So characters with simple anti airs and a good ranged game work well for me. Simple methods of escaping being locked down are always good. Finally if theres a choice of characters that fit those criteria, i choose the character design i like best. Thats why i’m gravitating towards blanka in IV.

If push came to shove i could main sagat, i’d just take a while to get that srk anti air to come out on reaction, he’s great at zoning too.

I hate when people just use top tier characters and dont even play for fun anymore. It doesn’t even make the game fun when only 3 characters are being used.

I was at CTF in NYC this summer and there was a guy demolishing everyone with Hugo and Alex. I just kept seeing chuns, yuns, and kens getting the business.

Yeah because nobody can use top tier characters and have fun at the same time.

I don’t really do that tier stuff but then again I don’t have much competition, I try to main as many people as possible except in 3s and Guilty Gear, like when I play KOF 2002 I can random select and fight the CPU or my bro and put up a good fight, BUT I do have a select choice of characters though

I used to play Akuma in Alpha 3, but then when I fought against Karin a time or two and saw her moves in action, I decided to try her out… I liked what I found, and switched. Only later did I find she was high up on the tier list.

Of course, Ken in 3S was because I’d been a Ken fan since CE, and he was simple to pick up. Again, lucked out on tiering.

Ganondorf? HAHA! But I liked how he changed in Brawl, so I gave him a shot, did well with him, and he’s now my main… shame he’s 3rd from bottom .

Agreed 100%. Also, playing to win and playing for fun are, similarly, not mutually exclusive.
