I am scrub player (I think…) since I don’t have any competition, choosing my main characters came down to who I like the most as a character and not a fighter, gameplay-wise if you may say.
I am interested on how tourney players, top players, respectable players, whatever you wanna call em, decide who to choose as their main char(s).
Is it because you like the character? Is it because Daigo uses that character? Is it because the character is top tier? Is it all of em!?
The reason why I ask is because I have been watchin 3S/SFIV videos lately, and all I see in 3S are Yun, Chunners and Ken, and some Makoto and that leads me to believe they are just using the characters because they are decent(top) tiers, or how Sagat is almost in every SFIV video.
My mains would be Vega, Chun Li and Bison. Reasons? I like them, I don’t care about tier lists, so even if some random dude says Vega is bottom tier I will still play with him.
I tried searching for a similar topic but every time I search SRK turns into a blank page, so please let me know if there is a similar thread so I can ask my questions there.
Honestly when it comes down to me playing a charcter it’s because I simply because I like them.
A good example is Blazblue. Although I havent even played the game based on what I see Ill most likely be playing as noel. why? because I like the fact that she uses guns for combat instead of sword or something.
I choose whatever character I like (which happens to usually be the girl i find the cutest or the one that strikes me at that moment). If i work well with them, and can play them well and enjoy it, ill keep using them, so long as the character is GOOD ENOUGH to compete. Being top tier isnt an issue, but i dont like losing due to character alone.

No seriously, I usually pick someone I’m familiar with. Ie same specials, supers, and what have yous. then when I’m comfortable enough, I’ll venture out and try someone new until I get bored of them.
For me it’s a combination of aesthetics and fun gameplay. (DISCLAIMER - Yes, I said fun. I’m still trying to win, to abuse abilities and whatnot, but that’s what I find fun.)
I have to like the general overall look of a character and how that character plays.
for me its a multitude of things. first i start with the sexiest female characters (why i love chun li so damn much :woot:) then from there i go to the coolest or most bad ass dude, last but not least i then go for gameplay mechanics. with those in mind i then try and match them up together to see what works for me. i love chuns old play style in the sf2 and alpha series and her cvs2 style, which is based off of 3s, but i dont like her 3s style so i play elena instead. same with other games etc etc
I choose characters I like personality and visual-style wise. In this regard I tend to lean toward arrogant/overlord types and the most annoying girl types (an odd paradox). I ignore tiers completely and don’t subscribe to what a top player chooses.
In some cases I ‘counter-pick up’ a character if my bro or close friend chooses a story-wise rival of that character. This is few and far between, though.
I choose Characters based on personality and playstyle. Example, I Main ryu in EVERY street fighter game. It doesnt matter if he’s low tier or high tier. I think he’s cool and thats who i play as. I may venture out into other characters but my best and main character is ryu.
People are usually split here. There are usually two kinds of people, those that play for fun and those that play to win. If you play to win, pick up the best character. If you play for fun and like to use a low tier character, be prepared to get raped by tier whores unless your name is Kuroda (or the like).
Luckily for me, Magneto is my favorite character and he happens to be the best character in MvC2. I also like Iron Man, Cable, Strider, Doom, Psylocke, etc and they also happen to be part of a top tier team so it’s a win-win situation (unless your favorite character is Dan and you like to get raped).
I’ve been playing Ryu for 16+ years, he holds a special place to me in SF.
My first SF char was Chun Li. When I found out how to do SBK and knew that it could AA, I had a 5 game win streak at the age of 7. Felt really good. Since then, I was hooked.
I actually didn’t start playing Ryu until CvS1 when c.shortx2 c.roundhouse xx ShinShoryu happened. He’s pretty fun in ST(only cause he counters Honda free). But yeah, I still play top tier.
I always go straight to training mode and play with everybody when I get a new game. From there, I just pick out a character I like. Usually I become somewhat attached to my choice and play them for years.
I usually hate top tier characters because they’re boring and too easy to win with. However, I have never selected a character who wasn’t at least mid tier, so having to “upgrade”, so to speak, has never been a problem. I always learn one of the top tiers though, just in case someone tries to tell me the character I like is cheap, or overpowered.
Anyways…there really is no reason for the characters I choose. I just like them. Like Applejacks. There really seems to be no connection between them.
I choose rather simple characters (like AH Saki) unless everybody and their mom picks the same. At that point, I choose someone else for the sake of variety (But in this case I’m STILL going to pick Saki).
