Chicago: More Popular Than Porn ... The Legend Continues

so did everyone take some time out to play their dreamcast today? It’s the consoles 10 year anniversary in America.

“9” was a good movie, by the way.

I need to see 9.

Ditto.

Also Gamer.

Sunday and Wednesday Lake Zurich theater is only 5 bucks. Lets go.

See. Both of us are on the same page. I think the little bit about the cellphone made him see it that way. But I do admit that was outtla line joke or not. So for that I apologize.

I’ll stop being dumb when you start sucking in MvC2…

But that’s not gonna happen is it?

Xombie… I just watched Initial D… Now I must learn to drive!!!

hey james, not singling out this post on purpose. was just skimming the thread and picked this one to quote.

i wouldnt say that single elim is not accurate. its just different rules, and fighting game wise it also works.

about the price, everyone puts 100 yen in a can before the tourney over here… aka $1. sometimes there are prizes for the winner(s).

if its any more than $1 tho, in the US… single elim doesnt seem fair b/c 1 and out is pretty harsh, especially when youre driving x miles to get to the place.

good luck guys.

Single elim can only be accurate if its has a long set like Humbag said. Any one can luck out a match thats best 2/3 rounds, but if it was something like best 4/7 rounds then you can see who the better player is in a long set. I mean look at Ricky Tran that Chun Li player that beat Daigo in the first game at EVO 2k9, if it was single elim, he would have been eliminated, but Daigo prove he was the better player by beating him in 2/3 games. Double elim or having a long set gives both players enough chances/time to adjust to each other.

I would never pay to enter a single elim thats best 2/3 rounds, fuck that shit.

Sabin himself talks about how random SF4 tournys are in Japan. One day he’ll get 3rd the next lose first round. Even though that kinda happens cause the level is so high there in general.

I take it back about single elim not being accurate, it is just more accurate at saying who was hot that certain day. Thats not a bad thing at all its just that it works much better in Japan and would fail pretty hard in the US because of said issues with tournys (travel, playing for more money etc etc).

Players still come from far away to go to single elim tournies…its not like everyone only goes to tournies in the area. Players from Tokyo sometimes come to the Osaka tournies and vice versa. Not a cheap trip, but because theyre not spending all day in the arcade, they can do other things and make the trip worth it. To me, it’s not about spending all day inside at the venue, its about doing other things, too, and I can maximize my time, and generally get MORE games in with single elim because the tourney is over so quick, there’s plenty of time for casuals, both before and after.

I’m more then extremely cool with single elimination lol. To me it just means better play your best.

I don’t know why anyone brings money as an issue here a la Arshad and syxx. Let’s bring politics, religion, pitchforks, and fire while we are at it.

Single elim is a different environment. Can’t afford to mess up at all, and more careful info gathering. If it isn’t properly seeded then it can be random. US tends to like to take bigger risks, where single elim won’t agree well with.

Just to clarify for everyone: I’m the worst. Stop thinking you suck more then me.

I think single-elim is actually a bit better since it forces you to truly bring your A-game. With double, if you mess up your first match, you have a bit of breathing time to get your mind right before the second. Single, you gotta be on it from the start.

I don’t know if you guys saw this Iowa tourney, but I’m thinking of planning to make the road trip (or whatever). Anyone else wanna go?

In b4 Frankie “ey nig lemme holla achoo”

yeah…single elims are just as accurate, sometimes more even (you don’t get a 2nd chance, after losing to someone who has your number, to play someone who’s number you have)

don’t sandbag, take it seriously, etc. need to be on your game

tourneys are random in the opponents you face anyway. sometimes it’s not even about how hot you are that day, but who you happen to face. especially if you’re just talkin about getting between like 3rd-8th place (depending on size of tourney)

Obviously Ari wouldn’t care about such a thing (i think?) at this tourney, because of how good he is. He probably wouldn’t need 2nd chances, or a chance to play someone he has a better matchup with to try to reach for 3rd or something. He would win it regardless.

only game single elim shouldn’t be for is MAHVEL. heck, sometimes standard tourney doesn’t feel right and you have top players complaining about it!

that wasn’t the original point about this tourney though. the price does seem a bit high for single elim. but it doesn’t seem marcus did that knowingly.

I’ll mm you on D D Rrrrrrrr

What’s the deal brethren?
Been MIA a bit. Having that live in gf is no joke, lemme tell you.
You cats down with the marriage tip know what I’m talking about.
You cats that aint… enjoy it. Trust me.

Tourney’s coming up? Yeah, fat chance on me getting leveled up to put up a decent go at any of them this time around. Good luck to you nigs in advance.

Any local shit going on this week or peeps getting in extra hardcore practice in before the tourneys? If so, hit me up.
I’d guess cats are doing the GW shit today, but cash is probably on the low tip for travel + fun. Unless nigs are carpooling. In which case I got halfs on gas. (Apples I’m lookin at you, jigga!!!)

Also
I’m off today and my schedules wide open. If anyone wants to get some sparring in on xbl, or hell… if anyone wants to swing over by me on 26th st and blaze, maybe grab some ill mexican or pr food for lunch, and hit the sticks for 50-60 matches. Let’s do this.
I’m not trying to fuck around with my training. I need cats down for the same type of shit.

My broad gets home at 630. I’m game for anything until then.

can reach me on aim, or text/cell 773-551-2237

I actually kind of wish more U.S. tourneys to start adopting the single-elimination or single-set game + double elimination formats. I don’t disagree with the logic behind taking into account entry fees and travel expenses, but I think that only wholly applied in the days when fighting game tourneys in the U.S. were sparse in frequency and smaller in size.

When I travel to the tourneys, I do so to play games with other people, not sit around in-between matches for hours at a time. There is something clearly wrong when tourneys for certain games can take 12 hours or more at times, simply for the reason that people are so insistent to adhering to the “FUCK YEA AMERICA!! double-elimination and multi-sets is the standard” logic.

And playing fewer games per set or playing single-elimination doesn’t necessarily give “less accurate” results. It simply means that it gives more way for chances - thus less predictable results. The odds are that these events will be won by top players regardless, but there will be more upsets (player-wise and characters-wise), which can give way to more interesting results. Take this year’s Tougeki for example: Daigo’s team didn’t win SF4; Top-8 for BB wasn’t dominated by Nu players; and there were no Eddie players in the top-4 for Accent Core. Would have we seen this kind of results if the tourneys were multi-games + double elimination? Most likely not.

Some of you guys use the term “accurate” almost as if tourney results should be pre-determined just by looking at a line-up of players, but in a retrospect that is just not as exciting to me.

If it was up to me, I’d run every tourney single-game (including finals), double elimination, and no character-switching. But that’s my two cents.

ftw!!!

Isn’t it a rule of some sort (spoken or unspoken, either way) for Japanese tournies where you sign up with your name and what character you’re using, prohibiting you from switching? I think something like that would be cool, though I’m sure there are those that will complain about 9-1 matchups or whatever, and if that’s the case, get better to become the 1.

Yeah. Who needs to counter-pick? Losers. That’s who.
