damn u guys are broke. No one wants to take my money at the tournament this weekend? I’ve been working on my empire combos (aka combos that u gotta do like 5 or 6 times before you can get them right. DIS IS AN EMPAIYAH COMBO MACH DEEFRENT THAN A PROO COMBOO. SHOW HEEM.) and the old school ones that I invented (crouching mk to fireball). trademark

Honestly, I doubt anything about the tournament is set in stone. This is a trial run, with expansion in mind on both sides. For this first tournament, I’d rather not try to renegotiate the venue fee after I’ve sent him the tournament format. For possible future events, the GM seems to be down to earth and someone who can easily be reasoned with.

Regarding this first tournament itself:

I can say that I am surprised and disappointed in most of the reaction I have seen. While certainly I am not opposed to critiquing, as it is of course the first iteration, I sense an overall apprehension from the community; be it from the fee or the structure. I can understand that things may not be ideal, but many people seem to feel it’s not better than nothing.

The fact that some who knew about the tournament before hand are surprised that it would be this format need to just think about this for a moment. It’s one cabinet. We need to see how long a tournament will take, therefore we need SE style to get a feel for the time.
It’s a new venue. We have relationships to develop a-la nickel city if we are in hopes of setting up a solid arcade. The fees as it stand are less than that of D’s tournament, (Granted it’s DE though) and for what they’ve offered, not a terrible deal. Will they change in the future? Maybe. However, as it stands right now, there simply wont be a future. I will not put in exemplary effort into a project when I have to charm participants.
I am no different than most of you, with the exception of my radical good looks and witty personality, I have a tight budget and tighter schedule. In the end, I may not like how the tournament plays out, but I’m still giving it a shot.

Well it’s nice to see a couple of the chicago guys putting in the effort to try to put together a tournament series and what the hell it’s worth a try. maybe it’ll take off and maybe it won’t. At least you are taking the time to attempt it, which is commendable.

sup arthur. good to see you posting.

Man is it a bummer seeing some of the negativity towards Marcus’ efforts. I can’t believe some of these complaints.

Here are the facts:

Marcus solely took on this undertaking to create consistent local tournaments at a LARGE, relatively central location. As I said before, with the proper support and evolution, this could turn into something extremely legit for Midwest players. Surely, all of us here would love something consistent, competitive, and LOCAL. This isn’t Japan or the west-coast people, our options are severely limited.

All of the complaints that I’m currently reading have to do with things that can and will most likely be solved with time and experience. Hell, our business alone to GameWorks can literally allow them to purchase a second machine. Complaining about pricing and seeding right now should all be moot points. Obviously this isn’t Evo, or any other large and established tournament, and critiquing it from the get-go when we have almost zero alternative options is, in my opinion, extremely rude. This thing has to first take off for us to make demands, and for it to take off requires our goddamn support.

It comes down to this: If all you guys want to do with our local SF4 scene is show up every Thursday night to play casuals with the occasional house gathering/house tournament, then by all means, vote with your wallet and don’t attend this upcoming tournament. But don’t come in here and bitch about seeding and pricing with no legitimate alternative. When some of you other guys take initiative to set up something like Marcus is trying to do, then by all means come here and criticize what you personally feel like requires criticizing. Otherwise, just please stop, because I feel like all it’s doing is hurting our scene.

Even though I can’t make it, I’m going to donate my share of the money had I been able to go.

First off, I want to commend Marcus for getting it off the ground faster than I could. It’s a good idea to try and bring people together.

I’m all for Marcus’s 2v2 tourney, and as posted, this is more of a trial, to gauge a myriad of factors. I’m pretty sure GW knows of the fighting game community, and I’m pretty sure they want to be part of it. Maybe this is a good way of letting it be known that another SF4 setup would be good. For what it’s worth, I believe Jason said that pending on popularity, they’ll be attempting to get the go-ahead for 1 more SF4 setup. So…

At any rate, Matthew proposed something before, i.e a ladder system as well. Maybe instead of a tournament, we can have a league/ladder system of some sort. Just some things to think about. Though I’m not exactly sure about feasability/plausibility.

I should be able to be there on the 20th.

my comment on marcus’s tournament is that me and eric are going to win.

real talk so much damage.

I’m sure the GW tournament will be better than the Singles at FIO3.

Also, there will be no “spectator” fees.

I have to add to this and say that I am the worst player in the burbs.

No one has lost to me yet. I am still hoping for that first win at GWs.

So don’t feel bad Money!

you know damn well that i’m the worst

ok well there’s slevin…
