CHICAGO 2016-2017 Thread: Welcome New Players, check out the Facebook Group page as its more active!
He usually post around 8:00AM to notify everyone.
I was at GGA on Saturday and I had a brief chat with Doc. After discussing the impossible nature of completing the Chicago track on Cruis’n USA without crashing (it’s one of the achievements), I asked about the possibility of us holding ranbats at the Wednesday sessions. He said that aside from paying the $5 at the front, we can do whatever we want.
So, what do people think? Say make July 20th Chicago Ranbat #1?
i say why wait until the 20th
the only thing you really need is someone responsible enough and who knows what they are doing… and will be there every week to run the brackets… and doesn’t need a computer to do it…
well w/e… it’ll just be for ssf4 anyway, right?
For now all I care for is casuals, considering we are still getting the feel for our new game night. Id like to run casuals / tournaments until EVO then we can commence the Ranbats. But of course it is just my opinion, if you guys are all ready for full fledge Ranbats then by all means get on it! Good to hear you are willing to get on the TO tip CurlyW, need more guys who are willing to do that part for the community! Maybe we should get a tournament going on the 20th for prepping our EVO participants?
Syxx it could probably be for MvC3, SSF4 and MK, which are our biggest games. Although not sure how well MK will be played on national level after EVO, Chicago will probably have its scene no matter what. Also maybe we should get a EVO gathering at GGA or someones place on EVO weekend for those that didn’t get to go. Maybe we could watch the tourney there and get some games in as well. Also next EVO we ALL NEED TO GO!!! I am going to save just for next year, i am not missing a single one again!
Ahh dangit. I dropped sf completely after Marvel came out I’m scrubby in mk haha
Games at my place thursday, july 7th. All that I know or have met before are welcome to come and stay the night. I havent seen most of you guys since the summer started, so it would be cool if some of you could make it. Games start at 6pm and end whenever we fall asleep. Lets get ready for evo.
Chicago should honestly have something like a weekly WFN style tournament.
love the av, genki sudo was my absolute favorite before he retired, even his abu dhabi matches were awesome
Just got called by my boss apparently im working till 10 tonight, but im off 2moro. So ill be hiking to GGA to get in some game time and to stay free.
i would be up for running ranbats at ignite, or i have a concept for a somewhat different format of doing tournaments.
at the same time though, if you run tournaments/ranbats, people won’t necessarily be trying to experiment with the game, and more so playing as safe and stable as possible (which is how you SHOULD be playing in tournaments), but if the community here in Chicago (which is relatively young and undeveloped compared to the other scenes, since the vast majority of veterans aren’t as active in SSF4AE and other new games) wants to advance, I rather encourage people to experiment and try things that might not necessarily work the first time, but either raise questions and breed more intelligent and original tactics, or with the right tweaking become a very viable option.
on the other hand, more ranbats let people get used to tournament pressure and that style of playing. people don’t play the same in casuals as opposed to in tournament.
you cant always cater to casual players when these games are so competitive in nature
I mean there should always be hookups and crack sessions but tournaments provide you with more knowledge than anything else (If you have the right mindset on how to fix your gameplay).
anything can be a good practice setting “with the right mindset”, so that is kind of cliche to bring up. its not about “not having tournaments”, but rather having people play in a setting to experiment with 2 relatively new games where people are still discovering things, as opposed to only working with youtube downloaded combos and tactics. nobody discovers new tactics on their own at tournaments, people bring what they have already figured out to the table, and then learns stuff they didn’t know about by interacting/watching other players they have never played before, rarely get an opportunity to play against, or seen play before.
ranbats are generally regionals where you probably will play people you have played before, or know how they play. the return is much less than an outside tournament, but there is value in having them. simply put, it isn’t as important as opening as much opportunity for everyone in one region to play each other as much as possible, which doesn’t really happen much during a tournament, but more so when casuals are open before a tournament, or after one (which really is just so people in different regions get a chance to play each other). how many people have gone to a tournament and waited a very long time for their next match, or sat around and did nothing for a long period of time? everyone has if they have gone to tournaments.
Summary: tournaments are great for interstate, but not important to regularly have in small local settings.
Actually, I think that having a non-ranbat, pre-Evo warm-up tourney on the 20th sounds like a good idea, and wait to hold Ranbats until after the big event.
I’m definitely willing to take charge in running tourneys in Brookfield. It’s quite far for me, but I really like GGA as a location now that I’ve been there twice. And yes, I do know how to run double-elim brackets without a computer.
As for the actual games, I was thinking that we could hold a different tournament every week, i.e. alternate between SSF4 and MVC3+MK each week. That way, we can finish the tournaments in a reasonable amount of time and give people a chance to play casuals before and after.
But as for a Chicago Evo Warm-up on July 20th (in all three games), what do people think?
i think thats a good idea.
If you want to run weekly ranbats, run all the games not just one. Don’t want to split the scene up further when it finally is turning into a solid form. Cause it is Chicago, and people will give excuses for not showing up such as ‘man they dont got my game i wont go’
I should go to GGA one of these days and play KOF XIII.
He’s a true renaissance man and a role model for all - mentally, physically and spiritually. I’ve sort of forgotten about him until I saw a World Order music video couple of weeks ago.
Bear in mind we’re talking about a venue that is letting us start as early as 3 PM and run to 2 AM or later; that’s -plenty- of time to get in ranbats and still cater to the casual matches/gamers as well. Not to mention the potential to be open on other days, Area XIII still being open, and other people occasionally hosting gatherings throughout the week. The whole “start now or start after EVO” I don’t really care much one way or the other, but I see no reason not to do ranbats. If people don’t like it enough it can always be changed back.
Hmmm is AreaXIII open tonight? Joe never misses posting when its open…
Wow I just found out what planking was, this world is going to shit.
