As far as keeping up with the times, that’s true unfortunately. Its kind of like peer pressure in a video game context. Its not a bad thing entirely, because of the amount of competition available; so, there is a benefit involved. But, in my opinion, MvC2 is the most fun of all 2D fighters so far, BUT only once you get to a certain skill level. I admit, its really demotivating until then, especially if you’re playing good people that don’t go easy on you. So, the way I see it, getting better at MvC2 really puts your temper to the test if the other person won’t let up on you. And, not many people can really handle that! From a psychological point of view, losing horribly sends most people through all these negative emotions and the game itself will be associated to those bad emotions (remember Pavlov’s Theory?). Now, with SF4, and most other Capcom games, I find that even if you just know basics, you can stand a chance so you won’t lose as bad.
But, luckily for me, Ty, Lil’ John, Gohan (sometimes Zane and Chuck) all still play MvC2 at Tilt. :wgrin: Me, Ty and Lil’ John all agree that MvC2 > CvS2 and we’ve all played CvS2 extensively when it was in the arcade so its not just a one sided opinion.
CvS2 was just too slow. No other fighting game (to my knowledge) can you fly around and do flashy shit that looks super tight and is also really anti-turtle. People watching who don’t even know how to play would go, “Wow!” Whereas, in CvS2, you’d have to know how to play to be amazed at anything going on. (Those custom combos are pretty flashy though!)
As far as my opinion on SF4, it still hasn’t grown on me yet because of school and other stuff-like playing MvC2 with people at the mall. I still like CvS2 better than SF4 currently, but only because SF4 hasn’t fully matured for me yet. But, I’m pretty much maxed out for how much I’m going to like CvS2.
I can see what Stranger is saying about the animation/art style of SF4 because I notice it too. But, I just ignore it and play the game. I think that the potential for me liking SF4 more than CvS2 is high due to watching some youtube videos of the current high level game play of SF4; it looks like it can get pretty fun also. Stranger, do you own SF4??
IMO, another factor in how much someone likes a game is age. Because I notice that as I get older, I find it harder and harder to really get into any video game intensely. And, obviously, these newer games are much more graphically enhanced than Super Mario Brothers or Duck Hunt!! But, from what I recall, I was way into Duck Hunt! And, I always wanted to shoot that damn dog! (I bet there’s going to be follow up posts where people are going to talk about Duck Hunt now; well, not anymore, now that I said that! But, bet you were thinking about it ) Imagine if Halo came out when you were 7 or something! Even if you don’t like Halo now, a younger version of yourself probably would.
