Character Select Fan Art Challenge

Woot, website has been updated.

4Neqs: Lol, that Akuma drawing is damn funny. I am greatly amused.

Landel: That’s really very good for your first try. I don’t have much to say since SFMC nailed it. That arm hanging there is really beautifully painted; better than I could do. Hehe, seems like you’re doing quite well, formal art education or not. Even without art school your anatomy and your sense of color are as good or better than mine

Star250: OMG, Emo Sagat. That’s great, haha. I think Sagat could be a bit beefier looking. He seems to be missing some of his distinguishing features like his eyepatch, and although you mentioned it in the text, I think it would be good to actually see some of the scar too.

Nohbdy: Awesome Gief, man. That bear don’t stand a chance. Love the exaggerated expression. I think the positioning of his hold is just a little funny. We should probably see his left fist coming up over his right arm.

Seba: Awesome Sagat. I’m having the same problem reading the action as the others though. Sagat looks like he’s about to punch him, but Ryu is already reeling back from getting hit. Both poses are very well done, but they just don’t seem to go together.

Rook: Cool Akuma. I think he could use just a bit more cranium up top. It doesn’t look like there’s quite enough room for it under the hair. You’re getting more adventurous with your color selections, and it looks like it’s coming along. I think I would have went even more extreme with the lighting. Make that pink light coming distincly from down/left and throw some cast shadows. Here’s a sloppy paintover:

Oh, and yeah, it’s Sagat week now

Here’s my Akuma:

Hotness

Chainwhore, I’d like to ask you: will you include Guile, Dee Jay, Juli, Juni, Fei Long, T. Hawk, Yun, Eagle, Ingrid, Maki, Balrog, Evil Ryu to the challenge? Thx.

Dreaded Fist - This has to be one of my favourite Kens I’ve seen. Maybe the darks could be accentuated a little more, but otherwise, I love the ‘real’ feel to it. For some reason, it makes me think of a photograph. Great work.

>< Man, i’ve missed so many characters alrdy >< Haven’t been here in a long while, good to see alot of old faces getting even better
Great stuff guys, i’m a bit late, but i had to at least get in a quick Gouki.

I’d like to keep doing these, but i’m really busy, hopefully i get something quicker goin at least. Great work everyone!

EDIT: Alright, i came back to look and he really did look thin, so i made some changes and replaced the old image.

Chain
thx for the crit man… that paintover makes it look a hell of a lot better. I agree with the cranium thing… I didn’t paint that area correctly.

Nice Akuma. The twisty part on his left forearm looks weird though. It’s prolly anatomically accurate but I’ve never seen it depicted that way before.

DFist
cool, mellow Ken. my fave work from you yet!
btw karate gi should be worn left over right.

Jashugan
he returns!
the pic is kick-ass as ever man… colours, lines, everything. Slightly skinny, but I can live with that

Jashugan - The purple aura…no, the entire colouring job is pretty sweet. Maybe it’s me, but Akuma’s pecs seem kind of small, which in turn make his head look a little oversized… however, my eye is not as trained as some other people’s, so I could be wrong. Nonetheless, this is some nice work you have here.

Jashugan, that pic is the bam-o-doodle doo man. You need to drop whatever your doing and make a Ken for me to look at.

Jashugan, that is so kick-ass. Gorgeous colours and lineart. Too skinny… but you knew that.

Let’s hope you can find more free time to bless this board with your art!

Ron: No formal art education has its drawbacks. You know how long I take to draw? The lineart for that Ken took about 6 hours. I don’t have enough practice. Unlike you guys who can complete a pic with colouring in 3 hours, I take like more than a week. Putting what miserable little free time I have into drawing just doesn’t hack it like going to art school and drawing every day does.

On the other hand, I was really lucky to get to know locals who are already in the business. They gave me lots of pointers and how to start learning. But most importantly they showed me that the dream is possible! Some are working in/have worked in Capcom, Sega, Square… etc…

By the way, really thanks for setting up this thread. Really got me into the groove of drawing again. And so many entries here. The response is so good.

Would like to see some of your stuff coloured without inking. Inking gives sat black shadows, which isn’t always a good thing in my opinion.

I know you were talking to Ron, but I just want to throw in my SGD$0.02

it’s all abt practice, really… I’ve seen fine arts students who didn’t put in the time and effort to seriously draw and still end up slow & sloppy as hell in their work. Thing is you can practice without an art school… it just takes up your free time, as you mentioned.

Actually, you seem really familiar with anatomy and proportions… what made the process take 6 hours? Perfectionistic ethic from all those engineering studies? Sometimes perfectionism isn’t really called for, esp in a weekly draw-off. Sure, do your best, but don’t kill yourself over it. The process should be fun too.

P.S.: I just realized that Ken was your first digital painting. Really nice job, esp after comparing it to my first attempt in 2000 which sucked so bad I backed off for a long while.

P.P.S.: I’m envious of your contacts, btw. Make the most of your opportunities, if that’s where you want to go

DFist: Good stuff man. I’m diggin how naturalistic it is. His gi below the belt looks a bit more saturated than above the belt. I think tossing in a few darkest darks would really help punch it up.

Ielehiah: All of the extra characters in the Dreamcast version of the game will be added after the arcade cast is finished. If you can get me a good screenshot of the character select screen from the handheld versions, I will consider adding those characters as well.

Jashugan: Great stuff man. As soon as I saw your username while scrolling down I was like awww shiiet, I remember that guy, he’s badass. Can’t wait to see more.

Nah, you’re totally right, it looks funny. I was having a lot of problems drawing that part of the drawing and eventually just settled and inked it anyways.

Landel: Speed will just come with practice, especially on the digital end. When I first started doing digital coloring it took me forever too, but the more you do it, the more you’ll learn to work around the program fast (I know like a billion keyboard shortcuts), and streamline your process. As far as doing the lineart faster: judging from your drawings, sketches, and studies, I would say you definately have the skill to go faster. You just gotta have the confidence to loosen up and bang it out.
I’m glad this challenge has gotten you into the groove of drawing again. It’s always good to hear that something I’ve done is helping another artist. Hehe, obviously though, I don’t deserve that much credit. I should thank everyone for participating with me on this. You guys have inspired me too.

Is that a challenge? lol. I’m gonna do it. By Saturday when I update, you’re gonna see 2 Sagats. One in my usual style, and one attempt at non-linear digital painting. Hehe, let’s hope it goes well.

That’s the best I found, man.

Dang time really flies. I’ll see if I can squeeze in a Sagat sketch this weekend.

Rook:
Yup. It’s really about practice. It took 6 hours because I have to erase like 30 bad lines for 1 good line. Sometimes you just don’t know where the line goes at first. A lot of trial and error is required to get it right. “Knowing it” isn’t the same as “putting it down” on paper.

I’ve seen some of my friends draw straight out. No guidelines, minimal erasing or none at all. The same sketch that would take me 2 hours would only take them 5 minutes. And its all because they’ve been drawing a hell lot more.

I view art school basically as a time to immerse yourself in art. Paying for the time to draw, to learn, and of course, to expose yourself to art fanatics.

I can’t tell you how much studying engin sucks now. It totally saps your will to do anything. Very much like the army… only worse. Even in the long holidays I end up trying to recuperate and play games instead of drawing. It’s bad. Really bad.

The perfectionist thing… that’s really a personal character trait. Nothing to do with “engineering ethics”. I’m an engineer by nature so… yeah, I’m a perfectionist.

Likewise. I’ve been trying shading on and off, but I’ve failed so badly it’s really put me off colour for too long. Glad I did a decent colouring job… or I’ll probably end up not doing colouring even longer.

sganimez.com used to have regular outings. That’s where I met most of them. It’s likely that the outings will pick up again in the holidays.

Thanks for your 2 cents man.

Ron:
Yup, I’ve been told time and again to make bold, confident strokes, rather than “feathering” in my lines. That’s going to be difficult to train. Loosening up the lines is also really difficult. I have the unfortunate urge to fill in every gap and line. Connect every hole, etc. Gosh, I so love those artists who can draw in a sketchy manner.

Good luck with the Sagat, man!

Re: laying down lines – I think sometimes it might be useful to just lay it down first and correct it later. Myself, I’ve recently taken to carrying 2 mechanical pencils with me, one with really soft 2B lead, and another with lead that doesn’t mark as darkly. I scribble all I want with the light pencil, and eventually go over the lines I want in the darker pencil.

try doodling on the bus/train, whenever you can. It’s low-level practice, but it’s good practice. I do it on my way to work sometimes. Don’t worry abt perfection, just get comfortable and let the lines flow. Like Ron mentioned, confidence will come with practice.

I don’t really have much comfort to offer abt how engin is sucking you dry, esp since in my experience working life isn’t necessarily better than studying (esp given how we are expected to perform in SG). I do hope you find some form of equilibrium where you can pursue both aspects of yourself, though.

Ron
just also wanted to thank you for starting this thread. It’s been pretty fun so far, and I’m glad to have a reason to push myself past my usual comfort level.

Go into detail about these lighter and softer leads. I just use 0.7 sized lead. I have no idea what that means.

You guys are way more techinical then I am in terms of drawing supplies.

Ielehiah: Too fuzzy. I’m looking for something sharp, without so much jpeg quality loss.

VSlash: At office supply stores and stuff they just sell a universal hardness of leads. I think HB is the standard. But an an art supply store, you will find many different hardnesses and sizes. Sizes range from a measly .3 to a fat .9 usually. And hardnesses go like this:

Hard<-- 6H, 5H, 4H, 3H, 2H, H, F, HB, B, 2B, 3B, 4B --> Soft

The softer the lead, the darker the lines, the harder the lead, the lighter the lines.

I’f I’m doing a pencil drawing I like to use 4H for sketching and B or 2B for finish. But I don’t do much pencil drawing nowadays since I’ve become addicted to inking with my brush pen. So, usually I sketch with a red lead, and ink right over it. After I scan it in color, I can use the channels in photoshop to drop all the red right out, leaving me a clean ink drawing. The same colored underdrawing process can be used for pencil drawing too, if you’re looking to make a really clean drawing.

I have returned…
