Ugh, Akuma. Not too fond of the character, the “take damage like a bitch” thing nor the “overpowered, deathwish warkfreak” archetype that he defines (I AMZ TEH POWARFUL I AM TEH FYT UNTIL SOMEOEN KILZ ME).

Finally done. So late at that. My first digital painting too.
I drew him to look like Terry Bogard actually… even included the cap but scrapped that since it would be too out of character. Notice how similar they are?
I know the colouring sucks. The face and each arm has different colours. Crits welcome. Especially from SFMC and Chain. Heh.
You know… I really prefer drawing to painting. Painting is… tedious.
The hair seems a little flat being a solid colour, and sort of looks blob-shaped (more towards the end of the ponytail). Sorry, just my thought on it.
For your first digital painting, though, it’s awesome (love the arms)… and it blows my work out of the water. Hope you post more. :karate:
Looking good Landel. There is nothing wrong with your coloring. Just a few things you gotta do here and there. All it takes is practice.
Pinch your darks more and keep the highlights tighter. Your highlights are traveling too far therefore you get a flat look. As for the clothes i don’t know if muscle would show underneath that gi like that. Give his clothes some breathing room. Don’t mean to be rude, but the hair is totally blinding me hehe. Take it down a couple of values.
Overall I really like your stuff man. Pictures paints a thousands words so my crits mostly come with visuals. Don’t mean to ruin the thread either.
just wondering, why are you always paint your pics like fine art style…honestly i dont think it look right. not tryin to offense you but i like the old style you used, to me fine art painting doesnt fit on anime/cartoon drawing at all…so yea i like your old style coloring…
Its all a preference and a techinique. The masters painted this way…it will only help your style in the long run if you learn how to paint realisticly. How will one be able to color anything correctly if they dont know how light and shadow work? Thats just my opinion. I want to learn to paint realistically sooo bad! If you look at a lot of capcoms art work youll notice a lot of fine art in it.

Hey what’s up Dan. I remember you from the snk cap forums. Still hang out around there? No offense taken. I totally understand where you are coming from. I’ll try to answer a few of your questions.
I studied under a fine arts school so i can’t help it 
The reason I paint like this is due to no time, and plus it just shows more in a short scale of time for crits. To me this isn’t really called a style. It’s more like a sketch or underpainting. The whole train of thought underneath the process is what you see. As an artist i feel this step is even more important than the finished product. This process shows how productive you are and how well you understand structure, color, and paint flow.
And as for my old style? If you mean coloring under the line work, then yeah that’s a different game from coloring over linework. In my opinion it’s alot easier and faster to color under line work. i kinda quit coloring like that for now.
I think anime/cartoon and realism can work together if you do it right. Let’s take Shinkiro, who’s style is more realistic than mine. Portrays the character without all the exaggerated features Street Fighter is usually built around. Does a beautiful job.
All in all yes I agree with Vent. It is a matter of personal preference. We just have a different view on things is all. Rock on my asian brother.

El Suave: Thanks for the crits! I realise I should have made the hair to look more like Chain’s Ken. I get the “hair looks funny” crit a lot.
SFMC: Invaluable crits. “Pinch the darks” meaning making them tighter as well? Sometimes I don’t know whether to blend or not to blend.
Yup, the hair is definitely too saturated. Was the last thing I painted and I was getting impatient.
Thanks a ton for the paintover. I was having lots of problems with the face, and I think I’ll be able to do it right next time. Especially the nose. The way you did the costume is excellent too. You can’t beat SFMC for values and tones!
You have no idea how much I envy you and Chain for having a formal art education. Me… I’m stuck studying mechanical engineering and can only do art in whatever little free time I have. Would really love to go to art school when this is all over.

Seba - You just made me realize how stiff-looking my Gouki was. I’m definitely gonna try and loosen up a bit and learn from your sketches. They do look like twin drawings. Great minds think alike they always say. LOL
Landel - I really like your shoulder on Ken. SFMC nailed it right for the crit. But yeah, tighten up your lighting a bit and you’ll be cool.
